Asking someone about their integrity is a great question to ask because not too many people would be able to tell you what integrity is or even if they truly understand what integrity means but I am going to tell you what integrity means to me and what I stand for and believe in. Integrity defines us as a person and all actions we make in life can define your belief system. Ever since i was young, honesty has always been a big part of my life. Integrity to me means going above and beyond with everything I do. I think this will fuel good grades and completion of assignments. Having good integrity also came with some confidence, because I had to do more and go outside of the crowd. I did and do more than everyone else, that made me fell a lot more confident about my actions. Confidence has pushed me to make suggestions that I otherwise wouldn't.
Based on Merriam-Webster, Integrity means to have the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. In the article “The Insufficiency of Honesty” by Stephen Carter, the author described that Integrity is a form of honesty, although honesty itself stand for something else. This is why he sees those two virtues as partly different . Carter realized this difference between complete truth and righteousness. Honesty is to tell the complete truth, but integrity is more about righteousness. Sometimes telling the truth could hurt somebody’s feelings which could be a disaster. “The truth hurts”, but having integrity means to not only be a truthful person, but one with moral values, being able to put other’s first and being able to keep promise. Integrity is not a word I use on a daily basis. I tend to compensate with a synonym such as honesty. However, true integrity cannot be explained with just one word. Having integrity means you are responsible for your actions, follow the golden rule, and always do what you believe is right despite the consequences. That said, a person of integrity is not a perfect person. We try to live up to a set standard of moral or ethical values, but as individuals we are bound to make mistakes over the course of our life. How we deal with our flaws or mistakes proves to the people surrounding us if we are truly a person of integrity.
Integrity is an idea that has been discussed by individuals with a verbal acuity far beyond anything I could ever hope for. With that in mind, I will not delve deeply or poetically into what integrity is or should mean. However, I will simplify the meaning of integrity; at the core, integrity boils down to doing what is right even if nobody is watching. See a piece of trash on the ground and nobody is around...pick it up. Driving down the road with no cops in sight...drive the speed limit. Arrive at a tollbooth and no attendant is working…pay the toll. An applicant is not readily available to sign a form for enlistment…track them down and ensure they sign it. I could write examples until infinity becomes paltry in comparison, yet I am sure I have made my point clearly; the greater good must be upheld regardless of who is there to ensure it is happening. It seems obvious that integrity should be a trait every individual is hardwired with from birth. However, integrity is a thankless trait; nobody is around after all. An individual cannot expect someone to clap, to smile, to thank them, to do anything actually. By definition, integrity should be something that is followed through with simply because an individual wishes to do what is correct, not because they expect accolades of any sort.
To prosper as individuals, it is essential to control a sense of honesty, in simple hopes of maintaining humane, respectable standards and boundaries. This honesty, however, is often asked of extension, now presumed to mature into a component well known as integrity. Learning, consequently, is inhabited through these expectations of strict dedication and independence. And although learning is accomplished abundantly, there is only a certain extent of upholding this righteous behavior. Though teachers, bosses, parents, or companions may be satisfied with the efforts of their lesser, they fail to realize that the request of integrity has not been fulfilled. Integrity, being the unflawed ability to completely dedicate one’s personally believed morals is a specific, well-rounded trait, difficult to be entirely possessed by a faulty being.
Integrity is about having morals and principles and it helps to define one’s character. When someone has integrity, they tend to stay true to their beliefs and values, they are more understanding, and they possess a sense of leadership. If you have integrity, you are honest and will always make the right choices. With it, you gain people’s trust and others know that they can rely on you. A person with integrity is more likely to move up in the workplace because their boss can see that this person is reliable and honest and will always make the right choice when it is necessary. With all of these great qualities that show integrity, some people have a tendency to compromise it. These people may have made a bad decision, or somehow been dishonest about something. Furthermore, the consequence could change their reputation for the rest of their life. Compromising one’s integrity could relate to a family member making the wrong choice, some professional cheating others out of their money, or an employee stealing from their company.
I strongly believe that one of the most powerful techniques to develop as a leader is to become self-aware, be honest and always have integrity in any situations. The word integrity is usually used as a synonym for goodness, trustworthiness, or decency, however it mean so much more than that. Overall it covers a person’s moral character and what he or she thinks, believes, and performs. A person who speaks about integrity and fails to demonstrate integrity in his or her actions can be categorized as a hypocrite. For example, someone who projects or pretend to have a high level of integrity, however fails to follow up on his or her actions, making false claims, and/or not doing the right thing when no one is watching them. Integrity is the quality of being honest. When you are honest about something or a certain situation you are considered a person of integrity. Also when you have integrity you have strong moral principles. When you have strong moral principles you know what is right and what is wrong. “Having integrity means doing the right thing in a reliable way. It's a personality trait that we admire, since it means a person has a moral compass that doesn't waver. It literally means having "wholeness" of character, just as an integer is a "whole number" with no fractions.” Furthermore, having integrity is a quality that many strive to have because it often means that you are a good person.
As you can see, the definition of honesty and integrity go hand in hand. Just as Spencer Johnson tells us, “Integrity is telling myself the truth. And honesty is telling the truth to other people.” Without honesty, there is absolutely no integrity. In the past few years, many major corporations conducted tests to determine how much of the world’s population was considered, “honest.”
Honesty is a characteristic that everyone should possess. However, being honest is a difficult task for many people. Living honestly means allowing a person’s true self to be exposed to others. Honesty is considered owning up to one’s wrongdoings and not lying, cheating, or stealing. Being honest is a trait that many people believe is obsolete. Even though every person interprets honesty differently, it all stems back to telling the truth. Being honest allows a person to earn respect from their peers. Honesty is allowing oneself to be completely exposed by being truthful.
Mark Twain once said, “ If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything (1894)” as a human being integrity plays a major role in your character, morals, intellectuals and philosophical concept of how you treat individuals around you. Integrity is “The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles (Code of Ethics, n.d)” if you are honest in your profession you wouldn’t have to remember the lie you told yesterday to get your through another day. Integrity plays a major role in your relationship, school, work, and home. When you lack integrity its hard for clients, friends, family and co- workers to trust you or be around you.
Beginning your career with honesty and integrity makes for a great team building skill and can help in create great relationships with your superiors and co workers. Integrity is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as a firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values, an unimpaired condition, or the quality or state of being complete or undivided (Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary 11th Edition, pg. 650). However, people on their own and as a society have a different perception of integrity. They believe it means staying composed, having unity, being trustworthy, and having a strong backbone. Each of these interpretations are correct and collectively work together to give integrity it’s importance to individuals and society.
