The Finding of Hope
Hope; n. A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. One’s ideas that things will get better. Hope is a very important symbol in the Novel the Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald. In the book The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald there is a green light that symbolizes Gatsby hope that one day he will reunite with his one true love, Daisy. Gradually throughout the book he gets closer to Daisy and the symbol has more meaning.
The first appearance of the light in the book .It was the end of the night when Nick was coming back from Tom and Daisy house and Jordan, Daisy friend, mentioned Gatsby living next door. As he goes Nick sees Gatsby at the end of his
dock. “.... he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious, and far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward --and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of the dock.” The green light gives Gatsby a sense of not being alone. He wants to feel as if he is with his love, Daisy. In the second appearance of the light Gatsby is with Daisy. Nick learns about Gatsby and sets him up with his cousin, Daisy. They were all at Gatsby house coming back inside after having a good day playing outside. “you always have a green light that burns all night at the end of the dock” It saying daisy will always be with Gatsby. Saying the light burns all night long like he is with her all the time like a warm place in her heart. Lastly everyone was at Gatsby eye followed it momentarily ; he raised his hand and painted across the bay. I’m right across from you.” He will never feel alone he always will be right next to the women he loves. It’s a symbol that basically gives him the hope of living with his true love. So, through the book the green light gradually gets closer to Gatsby. The meaning becomes deeper, more powerful. It’s something he has to live on to. As his relationship with Daisy his symbol of the green light got more connected to him.give up 24 98 124
“Hope is defined as the action of wishing or desiring that something will occur.” Hope helps people move forward in life to see what’s coming next for them. For example, “I had no right to let myself die. What would he do without me? I was his sole support” (Wiesel, “Night”.) This quote explains the effects of hope in a pitiful situation. Eliezer Wiesel and his father were torn apart, mentally and physically from everything they

Symbolism in The Great Gatsby Symbolism is what makes a story complete. In "The Great Gatsby" Fitzgerald cleverly uses symbolism. Virtually anything in the novel can be taken as a symbol, from the weather, to the colors of clothing. characters wear. There are three main symbols used in The Great Gatsby, they are The East and West Egg, the green light at the end of Daisy's dock, and the eyes of Dr.T.J. Eckleburg.
We must keep standing up when we fall, and keep trying when we fail. With failure, one seeks to overcome shortcomings by seeking a better future. As time progresses, Fitzgerald explores Jay Gatsby’s long desire for Daisy and emphasizes and his optimism for the future. Fitzgerald uses optimistic diction to express Gatsby’s view on the future when he states, “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us” (180). Gatsby yearns for a future with Daisy, and truly attempts to look for the “green light” in each situation. The color green represents hope and new beginnings. Fitzgerald utilized the color green to serve as a color of optimism and positivity. Gatsby desires and hopes for a love that he cannot get, and still believes he can find a way to achieve his goals. Jay Gatsby greatly anticipates for a brighter “orgastic future.” The usage of “light” symbolizes something that can be reached for, but never possessed. Jay Gatsby gets really close to Daisy, but can never truly reach her, and...

Throughout his life, F. Scott Fitzgerald, a prestigious writer of the Jazz age, experienced many battles during his unsatisfactory life. Many of his disturbed endeavors lead to his creation of many marvelous novels including his exquisite novel The Great Gatsby. From beginning to end, Fitzgerald’s notable use of paradox and metaphorical language creates phenomenal and modernistic symbols. Whether distinguishing relationships between characters and morality, Fitzgerald continuously uses symbols to express the adequate meaning of what is behind the true theme of The Great Gatsby-the power of hope cannot determine a dream.
As Fitzgerald wrote in the book, "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther…. And one fine morning——,” (Fitzgerald 180). This is a quote that inspires hope. It tells us that someday we could run faster and do even greater things. In the same quote about hope, the green light is mentioned. The light is explained through this hope of a better day. Barbara Will explained this quote by saying, “What matters to Gatsby is what matters to "us"; Gatsby's story is "our" story; his fate and the fate of the nation are intertwined. That Gatsby "turned out all right in the end" is thus essential…” (Will) The light, which symbolizes hope, mattered to Gatsby, and she explains that that should also matter to us. Gatsby turned out okay, so others who believe in the hope that light symbolizes should be okay as
Once stated by Dwight D. Eisenhower, “Motivation is the art of getting people to do what you want them to do because they want to do it.” The aforementioned ideology places an emphasis on an individual’s internal desires, rather than an outside/external force driving the individual’s consciousness (cognitive evaluation.) Therefore intrinsic motivation is one in which an individual 's own desire comes from within; a relentless and genuine passion for an intended goal. On the contrary, when an individual relies on external factors such as, a reward or any other form of external reinforcement, an extrinsic motivation is exhibited. Although society likes to stress the importance in pursuing an internal motivation, in today 's modern world, an extrinsic factor far outweighs an internal desire to accomplish an objective. As humans, we are too diverse in the way we think and develop, lending the mere classification of an internal motivation to become redundant. Furthermore, as
Hope isn’t just a word, it’s a feeling. Moreover, it’s a word, a feeling, and a desire. In the Urban Dictionary it defines hope as, “A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. A feeling of trust. To want something to happen or be the case.” So it’s true, hope isn’t just a word. In The Diary of Anne Frank, Anne has
What is hope? Hope is the feeling of desire for a certain thing to happen. Hope is something that even when everything goes wrong you still believe that there is still good somewhere. Hope is something that even the toughest people will feel. Hope relates to the theme in S.E Hinton’s, The Outsiders. The theme of this story, is just because something bad happens, that doesn’t mean that you can’t stop living life to the fullest, and even when the going gets tough you still have to have hope that it will get better.
In Fitzgerald’s novel, when we notice for the first time the color green it is obvious that one of its significances would be hope. Nick sees Gatsby staring straight at a little green light at the tip of Daisy’s dock. “Involuntarily I glanced seaward--and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock…”(21) That green light represents his hope to be with daisy. “He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling.”(21) Nick states that he sees Gatsby stretching his arms and trembling,...
“The Great Gatsby”, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, portrays a world filled with rich societal happenings, love affairs, and corruption. Nick Carraway is the engaged narrator of the book, a curious choice considering that he is in a different class and almost in a different world than Gatsby and the other characters. Nick relates the plot of the story to the reader as a member of Gatsby’s circle. He has ambivalent feelings towards Gatsby, despising his personality and corrupted dream but feeling drawn to Gatsby’s magnificent capacity to hope. Using Nick as a moral guide, Fitzgerald attempts to guide readers on a journey through the novel to illustrate the corruption and failure of the American Dream. To achieve this, Nick’s credentials as a reliable narrator are carefully established and reinforced throughout the story.
In the book“The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there are four symbolic representations. One of the symbols was a pair of eyes with no face with yellow glasses that represented God in the novel. The symbol only occurred in the novel when something awful took place. The reason I picked The Eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleberg is because it stood out more to me than any other symbol feature in the novel “The Great Gatsby”. The pair of eyes represented God throughout the story.

Symbolism plays a significant role in The Great Gatsby. Various substances, words or activities represent distinctive character features for each person described in the novel. Fitzgerald illustrates three completely distinctive aspects of the human life through symbolism. He narrates the glittery, magnificent life of the rich; the gray, ugly and desperate life of the poor, and the everyday struggles of those in between. The Great Gatsby, as a masterpiece, contains hidden and very important symbols that helps us understand the characters’ inner thoughts, conflicts and feelings.
