Orientalism and colonialism are concepts that are fed to us through propaganda and fear mongering whether we are aware of it or not. Orientalism was explored in lectures through the study of gender, race and nationalism and articles such as “Your Women Are Oppressed, But Ours Are Awesome” which focused on the government’s attempt to portray non-white or non-Western women as backwards and uncivilized (DasGupta, Sayantani, 2012). The article “Heteropatriarchy and the Three Pillars of White Supremacy” explores orientalism and colonialism and how they have been adopted and experienced in Western societies. White supremacy is a common theme in the study of imperialism, orientalism and colonialism. It allows Western societies to place their own culture and religion above all other and seek to destroy the culture, tradition and religion of the Native communities and indigenous people. Colonialism becomes a women’s rights issue when we consider the shift in gender roles that accrued when Europeans imposed their traditional ideals of women and motherhood on the indigenous people and how this effected their family dynamics (Ouellette, 2005). Women have always been the victims of colonization, they have often experienced war and genocide and have been the target of strategies that are used to impose violent acts such as mass rape and torture (Vickers, 2002). In the case of Canada, the colonization of the indigenous people lead to the marginalization of their practices of gender and sexuality and their understanding of social life (Kinsman, 1996). Canada’s First Nation communities have suffered and endured horrific and abominable racism that has been targeted towards them from the government following the colonization of their lands by the Europeans. Many indigenous and immigrant women have suffered racism and sexism that has been justified through the practice of colonialism and white supremacy. Unable to fight for themselves, they have been subjected to rape and torture and acts of violence to humiliate their communities and prove the supremacy and legitimacy of one race over all others. Women are always the biggest victims of colonialism and the practice of patriarchy because of their already low status in society, or in the case of Aboriginal women of Canada the loss of the high status
