Confucianism is the belief that family relationships are the building blocks of society. We know Confucius, mostly from texts that date to the "Warring States Period”.In his text, there is a strong belief on filial piety, which describes the relationship between children and their parents. Children should demonstrate devotion and dedication to their parents in all their endeavors starting from childhood through adulthood. One learns how to become an individual while still respecting others. As one grows up and starts to do things on their own they should at the same time still respect their elders no matter how old they get. There is a strong emphasis upon the role of family and its structure of society, which is about hierarchy, respect, and education; these are the three key beliefs. Warring States period in which he constructed the Confucian philosophy of nature, harmony, and ruling. He firmly believed that good family relationships were essential to reforming society.China gained knowledge from Confucius and enforced the government with his beliefs. It was believed that if people could learn from their families in the proper manner, they would, then be able to perform their roles in society and government efficiently. Confucius has a firm and concrete concept of respect and what it means to be ruled. In fact, he had a lasting impact all over China from 475 to 221 BCE and still continues to influence parts of China.Confucius believe in doing right and thinking about your outcome and how you act when governing .One should love the people he rules and vice versa. In The Analects ,confucius stated, “In leading a country of a thousand chariots one deals reverently with the business and exercises good faith one is economical in expenditure and displays love to others, and employ the people only due season" (Dawson1).Use your people correctly love your people show one is trustworthy. Confucius had a clear view about war and how to prepare. His perspective on war is based on the his beliefs, the beliefs in which you act right and do things you would have no problem with if they did it back. Believing that war violates his beliefs while an army that is going about his belief will win victory without causing bad actions or violence. Similarly, the teachings of Confucius focus on two things:social teachings, which refers to appropriate behavior as an individual within a society with people and political teachings, which is governance and the suitable relationship with the ruler to the ruled. Confucius stated, “Show solicitude for parents at the end of their lives and continue these sacrifices when they are far away, and people's virtues will be restored to fullness” (Dawson 4). One should continue what he or she was taught through their parents or elders by fulfilling and continuing the sacrifice, this will restore fullness. Furthermore, one has to show obedience and respect to superiors that he/she learns from children parents, younger brother to the older brother and wife to husband, which are the five key relationships. The inferior is required to show respect towards their superior and respect should be shown the other way around as well. Without the inferior, one has nobody to continue roles and continue to teachings. Each person is believed to have a specific place in society and is believed that if one does as told everyone will behave correctly and organized. In the same way, Confucius stated, “Few indeed are those who are naturally filial to their parents and dutiful towards their elder brother, but are fond of opposing their superiors are fond of creating civil disorder” (Dawson1).Strive to be perfect and grow from the knowledge of the elder’s filial piety guides the way of society. Kids depend upon their parents while they are growing up and learning while taking in things around them as they age, parents then start to depend on them since they are now older and can not do things that they use to. Confucius believes that even if one becomes older, having kids and house one should still take along rules while starting your own family furthermore,“young men should be filial when at home and respectful to elders when away from home” (Dawson1).One should be the same way one is inside one’s home outside one’s home not being a different person when out in the society.
To be sure not to dishonor one's parents make them look good threw the way one carries themselves in other people's point of view. Do not do things to others that you would not like done to you. There will be no dissatisfaction in the state or your family if one does follow the beliefs as told.Accordingly, Confucius believed in loyalty towards theruler, especially if one is being ruled over in conduct and truthfulness. In the text, it states that ,“Rulers in employing ministers do so in accordance with ritual, and ministers in serving rulers do so in accordance with loyalty”(Dawson 3),ministers who are the people being ruled over should serve the ruler with loyalty looking up no down on him. One who is ruled should not be afraid to be killed if the ruler is following the way of
Confucius. Confucius states “You are running the government so what is the point of killing? If you desire good , the people will be good”(Dawson 12).Both ruled and ruler have concrete concepts on how you should treat each other and how to build a society of good conduct where one acts as one wants to be treated back.Ultimately , Confucius was a well rounded man with lots of thoughts about the way we should live and he mainly made his statement towards his disciples based on filial piety and ruled over ruler and vise versa. Rulers should take Confucius belief and not have to use force for punishment. A ruler should better the economy and avoid unnecessary wars. While ruled should be a explain to others beneath them as in their children if everyone follows the right path the society will be well organized and successful in the long run.
To begin, Confucianism is a system of philosophical and ethical teachings founded by Confucius. Confucianism was the code of ethics accepted as the certified religion of most of the immense empires in the territory since the Han Dynasty. Confucianism provided an outline of ethical and religious beliefs that most of the Chinese expanded to make other religions such as Daoism and Legalism. To expand, Confucianism was founded by Confucius and his beliefs on the political and social order of China. Confucius believed that everything would fall into place if children had respect for their parents and if the rulers were honest. In Confucianism, specific roles were followed by each person in the family. The head of the family, the father, was the one primarily in control and then it was the oldest son that was next in line. Confucius had the belief that a ruler has to be everything he wants
Confucianism emphasizes on social values, government and traditional Chinese society. These were vividly seen in the movie when Jen’s father arranges a marriage for Jen despite her being against it. However, she couldn’t do anything because it was part of Confucianism values that a child should obey their parents to maintain the order in society. Also, in Confucianism women do not have a say in society and were...
The relationship between ruler and subject is that the ruler must work to protect and govern, while subjects must provide their ruler with loyalty. The father is responsible for caring for his son and providing him an education, while the son must show his father obedience and honor. In the husband and wife relationship, the husband is to provide for his wife, while the wife shows obedience and takes care of the home. The older brother has the responsibility to take care of his younger brother and look after him, while the younger brother must show obedience. Lastly, the relationship between elder and younger places the elder with the responsibility of taking care of the younger. The younger must then show respect and obedience toward the elder. In the even that the elder is unable to care for themselves, as in the case of aging parents, it is the younger’s responsibility to care for the elder. The idea is that when each person is doing their duty in each relationship, society will run much more smoothly and harmoniously. While Confucianism focuses on social aspects, it does not consider the
Confucianism became popular during the Han Dynasty as it was the state religion and had a great impact on East Asia (Confucianism 1, pg. 7). Born in 551 BCE in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, Confucius himself absorbed the teachings of Mahavira and the Buddha (Confucianism 1, pg. 2) He had a set of virtues that he believed a functioning society should stand by such as benevolence, love and rites. Confucius wanted China to return to the old days when people were loyal to their rulers and rulers were polite and caring towards their people. He believed rulers s...
What personal qualities were a women in classical China supposed to exhibit? What were her prescribed responsibilities? To what extent were normative gender roles for women in classical India similar? To what extent they were different?
Confucianism is a philosophy and way of life formed in China by Confucius, an early Chinese philosopher. It began as a simple concept with ideals of personal virtue, simple filial piety, and basic gender distinctions and social inequalities. But, over time with the emergence of Neo-Confucianism it began to transform into a way of life that was degrading towards women with certain hostilities towards rivaling religions. In its early period, from around 500 B.C.E to the Common Era, Confucianism changed in that it became the leading belief system and a major part of Chinese tradition. From the transition into the Common Era to the end of the Classical time period, Confucianism was altered because of a loss of popularity following the collapse of the Han dynasty and the corruption in the governing political system. In its ending period, the post-classical era, Confucianism underwent perhaps its biggest adjustments with the emergence of Neo-Confucianism. The ideas and virtues presented in the “rebirth of Confucian philosophies” of intolerance of foreign religions and extreme filial piety...
The teachings according to Confucius refer to Confucianism. Confucianism is the multifarious classification of ethical, collective, political and pious philosophy developed by Confucius and the old Chinese practices (Bertrand, 1999). Confucianism aim is actually making an individual honorable but also making such an individual the character of learning and of proper manners. The ideal and faultless man has to combine the characters of a saint, an intellectual and gentleman. Confucianism is a religious conviction whose adulation is focused on offerings to the dead. The idea of responsibility is extensive beyond the precincts of morals and holds close to the minutiae of daily living.
Confucianism is a religious philosophy formed by the Chinese philosopher Kung-fu-Tsu. This philosophy came out of need during the warring states period of Chinese history. K'ung-fu-Tsu was a teacher at the hundred schools. His prime concern was the improvement of society. Confucianism has no gods, and the only written history of this religion is in the Analects, a collection of his responses to his disciple's questions. K'ung-fu-Tsu believed that the improvement of society was the responsibility of the ruler and that the quality of government depended on the ruler's moral character. This new way meant concern for others and adherance to the golden rule. Confucianism has had a greater and longer lasting influence on China than that of any other religious philosophy.
Confucianism and Daoism are two influential schools of thoughts that have existed in ancient China around the 6th century BCE. The former, led by the politician and philosopher Confucius, proposed that humans live in society according to a set of predefined rules and that they transform society through political action. Whereas the latter, led by the philosopher Lao-Tzu, promoted the idea of inaction; people should go with the flow instead of taking action to control their lives and dominate their surroundings. Although, at first glance Daoism and Confucianism seem to be two opposing philosophies, a more in depth analysis of two of their key ideas –filial piety and education—reveals that they do share some similarities.
Analects, a compilation of Confucius’ teachings, is greatly recognized as a work of utmost importance and influence in the Chinese culture. The book conveys Confucius’ beliefs on a wide variety of topics, including propriety, education, family relations, and government in efforts to enhance social order.
Confucianism is a moral and religious system of China. Its origins go back to the Analects, the sayings attributed to Confucius, and to ancient writings, including that of Mencius. Confucius was born a mandarin under the name Kongzi. It was developed around 550 B.C. In its earliest form Confucianism was primarily a system of ethical concepts for the control of society. It saw man as a social creature that is bound to his fellow men by jen, or “humanity.” Jen is expressed through the five relationships—sovereign and subject, parent and child, elder and younger brother, husband and wife, and friend and friend. Of these, the filial relation is most important.
... Confucianism was all about loving each other, and it united the Chinese people in a way they had never been before. Confucius’s ideas helped achieve a peaceful Chinese society. In my opinion, Confucius was right to believe that man can attain the ideal character through education, self -reflection, and self- effort, however, I do not know if society could remain intact if everything were based on the trust system. Even with laws and punishments, people commit felonies, and I can only begin to imagine what the world would be like if the only things stopping a murderer from killing were his morals.
In the category of view of society, each belief has a different view. The Confucians believed that you develop good character through a good life and that everyone has their own role.

The teachings of Confucius put order, hierarchy and social harmony over individual egoism, that is, the person is subject to the strict system of laws, obligations and rituals. Social relations are based on the criteria of age, sex and generation: in the political sphere, the governed render their maximum loyalty to the governor, while in the family, the children obey the father, the younger brother obeys the older one and, finally, the wife obeys the husband. In the different stages of life, women are always under masculine authority. As a young girl, she must obey her father, when she marries, her husband, and finally, when she becomes a widow, her
