After reading “Persuasion” by Jane Austen, and watching two versions of “Mansfield Park” as well as “David Copperfield”, I have now decided that this essay will mainly be about equal rights between the genders and the differences between the working class and the aristocrats. In the text I will also mention socioeconomical issues and social science. I will compare these topics with the present situation, and find similarities and contrasts. Because even though matters have changed, some of these problems are still around today.

If we look at “Mansfield Park”, for instance, we see that Mrs Price, who married for love, is poor and miserable. While her sisters, on the other side, married for fortune and riches, and are living happily in a big mansion. The ward sisters are each in different classes, and this is a clear example of how unlike they are. Now I am going to focus more specifically on each class. The wealthy people barley did any work, especially not the ladies. Their only chore was to marry. They had nice clothes and fancy parties showing off their prosperity. Preferably, they should have skills such s singing, playing an instrument and speak French or Italian. In addition to the material differences concerning the classes, there is also diversity in the way people speak. The elite has a posh manner of talking, while the working class has a more relaxed tone. Therefore the majority did not have the knowledge of keeping household in the new society. Some ambitious girls could get paid positions as salesgirls, cashiers, teachers or governesses. When the telephone came along, it was possible to work as a telephone operator, which was a valued position. Eventually work in nursery was optional as well. As for the working class, the women often had to get jobs in case their husbands got ill or died. They had to make an income to be able to take care of their family. Charlotte Brontë’s novel, Jane Eyre, is set in a Victorian England, where social class is a huge factor in life. Brontë is very critical of Victorian England’s strict hierarchy. the main character, Jane, is a governess. Her social position is very complicated in which she has to be sophisticated, educated, intelligent, and soft spoken but she is then talked down to as she is of a lower class. The job of a governess is to teach children, whether it be art, writing or reading english literature. Victorian society is very corrupt and in the novel Brontë truly captures and illustrates the challenges that Jane has to face as a governess. The novel also emphasizes the social gap between individuals and how big it really is. In Victorian society, the rich get the most out of life and life for the poor gets harder. No individual should judge or belittle another due to the very minor factor of social status, but it seems to be very important in Jane’s society. The message that Brontë expresses in the novel is that social class is a meaningless catalyst in the progression of relationships, creating giant gaps between individuals.
Vanity is a reoccuring theme in Persuasion and is particularly portrayed through the character of Sir Walter Elliot and it is evident that the cause of this is the abundance of wealth that seemingly elavates the upper classes. Social class is an underlying factor to which all characters run their lives. It is always a priority and influenced most, if not every part of their lives. Most of the characters in the novel respect the rules of class and are always trying to climb the social ladder. Or if they are atop this ladder, they make it a mission that they remain there. Mrs. Bennet tried very hard to have her daughters marry the most socially advanced men and in the end the daughters chose socially respectable men. Elizabeth at first preached against marriage for money, but strangely mocked herself by marrying the richest of them all.

Her parent’s encouragement led to her interest in writing. Austen’s father housed an extensive library filled with books which kept Austen occupied for years (“Sense and Sensibility” 119). Through her observant nature and passion to read and write, Austen was able to eloquently write of the many “hidden truths” of social and class distinction during her time. Author Jane Austen had porttryal of arrogance that existed in upper class society. She uses Emma as a representative of the faults and lack of values of her society. Just as Emma contains these many faults, the upper class society as a whole also contains these many faults. Additionally, in Emma, Austen depicts the distorted views of gentility. Austen depicts her own message of true gentility by creating characters of differing class ranks. Bradbury relates that the characters that are socially high seem to be morally inferior and those of lower rank are "elevated" by their actions (Austen 81). Austen's development of characters, especially Emma, is very effective in relaying her message about the snobbery and lack of gentility that existed in upper class society.

Jane Austen is very clear in her writing about class distinction and she uses the novel to look beyond the widely stratified community divided by social classes experienced in the 18th century in England. This distinction shows that class snootiness is simply but an illusion rather than a real obstruction to marriage, given that Elizabeth, though socially inferior to Darcy, she is not in any way academically inferior to him.
