On June 2009, a pit was dug to construct the Weymouth Relief Road unravelling a gruesome discovery, a burial area for Vikings. It was discovered in Ridgeway Hill near Weymouth, Dorset (South West, England). All the bodies in the pit have been decapitated and their skulls thrown to one side of the pit. According to archaeologist the pit is a burial compound for Viking mercenaries. 54 skeletons and 51 skulls lay in this area hence receiving the name, the Headless Vikings of Dorset. It seems that the men were executed, however they did not obliged quietly. This is present through the wounds on their skulls, hands and wrist bones suggesting that some may have tried to fight off the executioner. The Vikings ribs, skulls and leg bones were separated
Lithologically the Kimmeridge Clay Formation can be subdivided into four units (Figure 2), despite of beds at the base of the succession are poorly exposed. However, in contrast, the units from mid-eudoxus Zone to the top of the formation that are well seen in the Formation. At the base of the formation until the eudoxus Zone, the strata are made up almost entirely of bioturbated shelly clays and in between beds, horizons of oil and bituminous are present. The upper part of the Eudoxus Zone until the upper Pectinatus Zone the composition is kerogen-rich mudstones and coccolith limestone.
Moundville has been the focus of a large amount of archaeological interest due to its impressive earthworks. Clarence B. Moore produced well-publicized works. During his time in Moundville in 1905 and 1906, Moore pierced the mounds with “trial holes,” finding numerous burials and related artifacts. Unlike many treasure hunters, Moore donated the majority of his find...
Trustworthiness is not only shown in words, but also in a person’s actions. Often, actions will not be done, but it might or always be the case. In the poem “The Cremation of Sam McGee”, by Robert W. Service, a story about perseverance and the trustworthiness of friendship, it is evidence that no matter how tough the situation is, a trustworthy person will always try to overcome the situation to help his or her friend. Through the character Cap, it is illustrated that he is a trustworthy friend, for which he is willing to overcome any obstacles to complete his promise. At first, Sam McGee requested Cap to cremate his last remains when he dies (because he knows that he could not handle the cold during the journey, and Cap accepted the promise.
While looking through the book list I was mainly looking for a title that really got my attention and would be a good read. With this goal in mind I really thought that “From a Watery Grave: The Discovery and Excavation of La Salle’s Shipwreck, La Belle” fit that criteria. While reading it I gained a lot of insight on how you go about excavating a sunken ship. The book is about the excavation of the explorer Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle ship the La Belle. The ship slammed in the Texas bay by gale winds and storm surges, La Belle finally slipped beneath the water and sank, where it would remain for over 300 years until it was finally found by the Texas Historical Commission archaeologists. It was assumed that Robert Cavelier was looking to establish a colony in the New World. I believe if they had landed where they wanted to, they would have been able to colonize there with the cargo they had arrived with. To see if this would have been able to achieve I must take a closer look at the materials that they brought with them on their voyage.
The Battle of Cold Harbor was fought from May 31- June 12 1864. The most significant fight of the battle occured on June 3rd. It was one of Ulysses S Grant’s last battles of the overland campaign. It’s remembered as one of America’s most lopsided and bloody battles. Thousands were killed or wounded during the frontal assault on Robert E. Lee’s army. On May 1st the battle first ensued with Ulysses flanking Lee’s army. The union seized the old Cold Harbor and defended it from confederate attacks. Both sides had suffered enormous casualties, and when both sides received reinforcements, it happened again. On the days after both sides had received their reinforcements, both sides spent time preparing and defending.

While digging in the far reaches of the African outback, now know as the western part of Kenya, archaeologist Bozo excavated a site that revolutionized the thoughts of the scientific world. At this site they found many interesting artifacts and paintings that included proof of an early civilization. At this time scientists are calling this civilization “Pontu” after one of the paintings suggested that a pontoon was used for transportation across Lake Victoria, one of the adjacent lakes.

The Vikings were a ruthless people. A historian by the name of Sherma tells the story of the ruthlessness of the Vikings, “The mother of all churches, . . . was taken and plundered by the Moors . . . moreover, [the Vikings] slaughtered all the Christians whom they found” (87). The Vikings were a fearsome people who made plundering and killing a way of life. The Norse were also heavily feared by the Christians. “The heathen from the North wrought havoc in Christendom as usual and grew greater in strength” (Sherma 87).
Dr. Solecki stated: "The recovery of pollen grains around the Neanderthal burial was in itself unusual and without precedent to our knowledge, but to find flower pollen, and in quantity, was an added extraordinary dividend. The association of flowers with Neanderthals adds a whole new dimension to our knowledge of his humanness, indicating that he had 'soul’.” After the specific flowers were identified, Solecki then carried the research one step further and determined that seven of the eight flower species found in the grave are known in Iraq for their herbal and medicinal properties. Solecki then expressed the opinion: "It is extremely likely that, as practicing naturalists, the Neanderthals must have known and appreciated all of their environment,
My EAST project is called Greenbrier Cemetery. My project members are Garrett Ring me, Jonah Ashworth, Connor Reeves, and Ryin Johnson. Our problem in the community is people can’t or cannot find their relatives at a certain point that's where we come in. This project will benefit people like that, that are confused or do not know were there past relatives are buried. I could personally tell you this is a problem because I was in this same situation. One time when I and my family were going through Quitmen, AR to see my great grandpas but we were confused on where that might be located. This gave or group an idea how we could do this for Greenbrier. By the end of April this project should be completed. Our team will complete project inside
