‘Jane Eyre’ is a 19th century novel written by Charlotte Bronte. Bronte creates a sense of terror in chapter 26 in various ways, including: the rendezvous with Bertha and Bronte’s description. The gothic style also plays a big part in numerous points in the book.
“Jane Eyre” is about a young orphan girl called Jane Eyre who is neglected by her aunt and grows up to be a governess, who is well educated. She marries Mr. Rochester after a series of events.
In chapter 26, Jane Eyre is preparing for her wedding. Mr. Rochester seems anxious, he wants to get to the church and get the wedding over as soon as possible. There is a sense of urgency with him especially at the start of chapter twenty-six. He says to Jane “my brain is on fire with impatience”. Traditionally, weddings are exciting days, however Rochester doesn’t reflect this. This foreshadows something is wrong, or disturbing him. When Jane and Rochester reach the church, Bronte describes two men outside the church as “two figures…strangers…straying…reading…mossy headstones”, graveyards are where people who have died are buried and in many gothic novels a graveyard is mentioned or plays a part. This adds to the foreshadowing and also links to the gothic genre as headstones and graveyards are often used in classic gothic novels such as Frankenstein. The “figures” are mentioned over and over, adding to the nervousness and making it obvious to the reader that they have some sort of role. Red symbolises blood, death and the Devil. That makes the red room, daunting and terrifying. Jane sees the “ghost” of Mr. Reed, and thinks that he’s come from beyond the grave to take revenge on Mrs. Reed who broke her promise of treating Jane like one of her own. The mention of a ghost adds to the gothic away from chapter 26 in this novel.
Overall, Charlotte Bronte uses her language to maintain the terror in chapter 26 and the gothic style elsewhere in the novel. Also Mr. Rochester’s urgency and Bertha’s animal-like behaviour add to the tension and terror in chapter 26. The setting also plays a key part in creating terror. Bronte creates terror by unleashing a built up plot in one huge moment.
The beginning of the novel starts out with a picture of a peaceful home that is very similar to the Moor House Jane lives in while visiting her cousins. Due to the conventions included in the novel, this is a perfect example of a gothic novel. The novel evokes in the audience fear and anticipation of the novels plot. The 19th century audience would have been overwhelmed with terror whilst reading the novel as the atmosphere creates suspense and the pace of the novel is fast.
Reed had received a letter from a John Eyre of Madeira; saying that he wanted to meet Jane and wanted to adopt her because he didn't have any family himself, he was not married and had no children. As the merciless person she was, she did not want Jane to experience the feeling of hope or contentment. The author's use of Jane being locked in the red room, as a symbol of hell. From the beginning of the novel, the main character, Jane encounters the supernatural. Charlotte Bronte uses both supernatural and gothic themes to enhance situations for the reader and to develop the characters. In particular natural imageries have been used to convey a human connection with the natural world and human nature (Franklin, 1995). Eyre portrays the intrinsic struggle between supernatural and the effects of nature. Branflinger and Thesing (2002) argue that Bronte used Gothic and the supernatural to explore and portray the darkest alleys of her own psyche which Bronte was deeply disturbed by (p309).
The themes of the gothic and supernatural are two of the main themes in both Jane Eyre and Turn of the Screw. However, there are traits of mental illness or madness found in both protagonists in James’ and Bronte’s novels along with Bertha Mason. Both authors present these themes to the reader in a number of ways.
Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre focuses on the life of a young orphan named Jane Eyre. In the beginning of the novel Jane is living with her aunt, Mrs. Reed at Gateshead Hall, where she is treated horrible by not only Mrs. Reed, but her children as well. Later in the story Mrs. Reed takes to Jane to the Lowood Institution, a charity school run by the a man named Mr. Brocklehurst. While at Lowood, Jane meets Helen Burns, who befriends Jane and ends up helping her learn how to endure personal injustices and believe in God. When Jane is 18 she starts to advertise for a job as a private tutor. After doing so, Jane gets hired to be a governess to the young Adele Varens at Thornfield manor where she meets the love of her life Mr. Rochester, the master of Thornfield manor.
The novel, Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, has a plot that is filled with an extraordinary amount of problems. Or so it seems as you are reading it. However, it comes to your attention after you have finished it, that there is a common thread running throughout the book. There are many little difficulties that the main character, the indomitable Jane Eyre, must deal with, but once you reach the end of the book you begin to realize that all of Jane's problems are based around one thing. Jane searches throughout the book for love and acceptance, and is forced to endure many hardships before finding them. First, she must cope with the betrayal of the people who are supposed to be her family - her aunt, Mrs. Reed, and her children, Eliza, Georgiana, and John. Then there is the issue of Jane's time at Lowood School, and how Jane goes out on her own after her best friend leaves. She takes a position at Thornfield Hall as a tutor, and makes some new friendships and even a romance. Yet her newfound happiness is taken away from her and she once again must start over. Then finally, after enduring so much, during the course of the book, Jane finally finds a true family and love, in rather unexpected places.
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte is a novel about a woman, Jane, moving from place to place on a path to find her own feeling of independence. Throughout her journey, Jane encounters many obstacles to her intelligence. Male dominance proves to be the biggest obstruction at each stop of Jane's journey. As Jane progressed through the novel her emotional growth was primarily supported by the people and the places she was around. In 1847, Charlotte Bronte, although a woman, published her semi autobiographical Jane Eyre. She wrote her novels in Thornton, Yorkshire, England. This novel later became a classic literature novel. ( Bronte) She wrote in the 1800’s and her novel reflects the time period, which she wrote in with the various techniques and themes. “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte is a novel about an orphan girl growing up in a tough condition and how she becomes a mature woman with full of courage. Her life at Gateshead is really difficult, where she feels isolated and lives in fear in her childhood. Her parents are dead when she was little, her dead uncle begged his evil wife, Mrs. Reed, to take care of Jane until she becomes an adult. But Mrs. Reed does not keep her promise, no one treats Jane like their family members even treats her less than a servant.
