The titles of my watercolor paintings are Frantic, and Relaxed. I chose these two emotions because I thought they contrast each other well. I chose the emotion or feeling frantic because I thought it would be fun, or to say the least, interesting to paint. I chose the feeling relaxed because It contrasted well with Frantic and the colors and paint would be a simple smooth paint. Franic means to be out of order and scrambling to get things done. Relaxed means to have nothing bothering you, and to be comfortable. I chose the colors midnight blue, turquoise, grey-purple, and lime green because I feel, if painted the right way they’ll represent both of the emotions I’m trying to portray correctly.

The historical painting I chose for my final, is an illustration of Bret Harte’s novel, Her Letter, His Response, and Her Last Letter, creatively illustrated by Arthur Ignatius Keller in 1905. The historical painting I chose for the comparison of Arthur Keller’s painting is another painting done by Arthur I Keller; illustrated for 54-40 or Fight by Emerson Hough, in 1909. Arthur I Keller is a very natural, elegant style painter, with an eye for natural beauty. Keller’s many paintings express intricate detail, and genuine quality. Although I picked two water color paintings out of Arthur Keller’s many collections of paintings, he also uses charcoal, acrylics, oils, and pastels to create other works of art. In both paintings I chose, Arthur Keller uses water color and gouache to paint people. Arthur’s first painting I mentioned, illustrating “Her Letter” is a more detailed painting. Keller uses water color to create a graceful look to his painting; his delicate balance of color, keeps the viewer’s eyes wandering around the painting. The focal point in the painting does not catch the viewer’s eyes because of heavy, dark colors, but because of the proportion differences of the people he implies. The painting gives off a very old fashioned feel, in a tasteful way. Arthur Keller’s second painting, illustrating “54-40 or Fight” has a completely different color theme, and gives off more of a mysterious, dark feel to it. The painting is detailed, but in a more simple way, and there is less negative space. As to where Keller’s “Her Letter” painting had a lot of open areas on the canvas, this painting, displays two people in a small enclosed dark room. The Kandinsky painting represents“ Chaos and control.” This quote is mentioned repetitively and strategically throughout the movie to illustrate the fluctuation of lifestyles and relationships the characters undergo throughout the film. In one scene they are relaxed, happy, and having a good time conversing with friends and in the next scene they are frantic, outraged and arguing. In other words, the Kittridges lives, like the Kandinsky painting, are out-of-balance and easily swing back-and-forth between a life of case and control.

Looking at landscape art, especially when painted by one of the masters, many have undoubtedly pondered: what would it be like to live there? Shapes and attention to detail are, of course, important in a painting. However, it is color that draws the eye and inspires the heart. Oscar Wilde, an Irish poet and dramatist, spoke well of this when he noted that, “Mere color, unspoiled by meaning, and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways. (qtd in “color”)”. Vincent Ward had a similar understanding of this impact when, in 1998, he directed the movie What Dreams May Come. Looking at this film, one can easily imagine being inside a living painting. The use of color to emphasize the emotional state of a character or event is common in films; nevertheless, Director Ward goes even farther in using color to represent the actual characters themselves. Red is the shade chosen to signify Annie and likewise, blue is used for Chris. Both of these, as will be shown, are accurate in defining these fictitious people. However, it is the profound use of purple in this film that is the true focal point. When mixing red and blue paint, one would find that, after being mixed, they cannot be separated. Likewise, this is true of the life and love these characters build and share. Purple represents the many ways in which Chris and Annie are melded, and joined.
Searching in their bag once more the artist discovers a mop paint brush, the artist rubs their mop paint brush into each and every palette color; embracing their many options. With slow, steady and spongy strokes; the artist creates a clown-inspired painting from each color on their palette. The size of the painting is 34 3/8 x 45 3/4 in. (86.5 x 115 cm). The height in proportion to the width shows that the painting is not proportional but it is not far off from forming a perfect square. The frame does not cut-off any of the people in the painting. The composition is centered and zoomed in to show what is going on. The composition is not simple but it is not complex either. The composition is not geometrically ordered. The people seem to be free and in motion. There is asymmetry throughout the painting. In the organization of the painting the objects appear to be crowded. There is not a lot of space between the people who appear to be fighting. The shapes of the people show that the mermaids are fighting a big guy and the placement of them shows unbalance. There are a couple objects presents. A total of three mermaids are presents including a triton and some objects are in the background represented by shadows. The sizes of the objects in the center of the composition are big compared to the ones in the background. A lot of emphasis is present in the center of the painting. The forms of the mermaids and triton are volumetric and a nice scenery is present in the background. The mermaids and trition are formed by contoured lines. Some of the lines are sharp and defined to show the natural curves on the human body and there is blurred out lines in the water to show waves and movements. The lines help give the painting a realistic feel to it. The lines are active in the reflection of the water. The color pallet present in the painting is soft with neutral warm colors. In the picture book don't think about purple elephants, Gwyneth Jones the illustrator uses different artistic qualities to assist with deeper understanding and emotion within the text. She uses elements mentioned in Children illustrations including color, texture and perspective. When Susie is playing throughout the day and on weekends the colors are bright but soft including blue, purple, green and yellow. The text moves forward to mention her anxieties when she goes to bed. The perspective of the illustrator switches from neutral to above her looking down. I see this as the illustrator conveying her emotions making it feel empty and vacant. Imagine pondering into a reconstruction of reality through only the visual sense. Without tasting, smelling, touching, or hearing, it may be hard to find oneself in an alternate universe through a piece of art work, which was the artist’s intended purpose. The eyes serve a much higher purpose than to view an object, the absorptions of electromagnetic waves allows for one to endeavor on a journey and enter a world of no limitation. During the 15th century, specifically the Early Renaissance, Flemish altarpieces swept Europe with their strong attention to details. Works of altarpieces were able to encompass significant details that the audience may typically only pay a cursory glance. The size of altarpieces was its most obvious feat but also its most important. Artists, such as Jan van Eyck, Melchior Broederlam, and Robert Campin, contributed to the vast growth of the Early Renaissance by enhancing visual effects with the use of pious symbols. Jan van Eyck embodied the “rebirth” later labeled as the Renaissance by employing his method of oils at such a level that he was once credited for being the inventor of oil painting. Although van Eyck, Broederlam, and Campin each contributed to the rise of the Early Renaissance, van Eyck’s altarpiece Adoration of the Mystic Lamb epitomized the artworks produced during this time period by vividly incorporating symbols to reconstruct the teachings of Christianity.
I have chosen to write my paper on painting titled “Café at Night” by Vincent Van Gogh. Since this picture is a very popular one, I might have seen it a couple times before I actually decided to write about it. I feel warmth, streaming out of it, when I take a look at the “Café at Night”. This comfortable feeling made me select this artwork.
Landscape paintings became of interest to artists as a way to depict nature, a man?s spiritual place in the world, and his relation to God (Pohl, 2012). The paintings of nature became a way for artists to express themselves visually and spiritually while also expanding what people could see, read, and feel (Pohl, 2012). Landscape paintings helped to grow communities and expand the western movement (Pohl, 2012). There was an issue between tearing down and using the resources of nature to build communities and to increase material wealth (Pohl, 2012).
In the University Of Arizona Museum Of Art, the Pfeiffer Gallery is displaying many art pieces of oil on canvas paintings. These paintings are mostly portraits of people, both famous and not. They are painted by a variety of artists of European decent and American decent between the mid 1700’s and the early 1900’s. The painting by Elizabeth Louise Vigee-Lebrun caught my eye and drew me in to look closely at its composition.
Art has a way of speaking out to an audience. Painters share their story through a paint brush, creating such a magnificent illustration. Each unique piece of craft represents a fairy tale, fiction, nonfiction, or personal story. The audience forms their own story line when analyzing a painting, which may differ or relate to the message that the artist wants to portray. Another beautiful art is literature. When reading a stanza, it paints a picture in the reader's head. Occasionally, writers can be inspired by such paintings. Sylvia Plath is one of the many writers who fell exceptional of such a piece; she decided to use the same title for her poem. "The Disquieting Muses" was painted by Giorgio de Chirico and later on the painting encouraged Plath to write a poem, using the same title. These two pieces of art differ from one another, but acquire a special similarity.
"A picture can paint a thousand words." I found the one picture in my mind that does paint a thousand words and more. It was a couple of weeks ago when I saw this picture in the writing center; the writing center is part of State College. The beautiful colors caught my eye. I was so enchanted by the painting, I lost the group I was with. When I heard about the observation essay, where we have to write about a person or thing in the city that catches your eye. I knew right away that I wanted to write about the painting. I don’t know why, but I felt that the painting was describing the way I felt at that moment.
