What would happen if the American Revolution never happened? Would the colonists still be under control of Britain? Would the 13 colonies still be only colonies? How would the Native Americans lives be today? Was the American Revolution really revolutionary and did it bring radical change within the colonists lives and was more helpful than harmful? Although America gained freedom from defeating Britain in the Revolutionary War, it was more harmful than helpful because of treatment of the Native Americans, slaves, and the fact that government didn’t improve. Native Americans were living peacefully before the colonists came. It went against a direct quote put in our Declaration of Independence. Zinn argues that, “Slavery was there before. Slavery was there after. Not only that, we wrote slavery into the Constitution. We legitimized it.” After the war was over, it was put in the Constitution that slavery was legal. By putting that in there they said that it is ok to own other people and treat them as a piece of equipment or machinery rather than a human being. It was against everything they just fought for, that all men are equal. Thomas Jefferson, one of the the founding fathers, wrote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It states in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal, but they still had slaves. The slaves were not treated with the same respect as any white person at that time. After the colonists won the war and they expanded and the amount of slaves increased tremendously.
