Was Magellan Worth Defending At The Battle of Mactan? by Maria Ivankovic Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese expert on sea exploration and navigation. On September 20th, 1519, he and 270 men on five ships began their voyage to find spices and circumnavigate the globe. His goal was to achieve fame and glory. However, things took a turn during the Battle of Mactan when he died. Magellan was worth defending at the Battle of Mactan because he was a master of sea exploration and a firm, brave leader. The first reason that Magellan was worth defending was that he was an expert at sea navigation. For example, in an excerpt from Laurence Bergreen’s “Over the Edge of the World” in 2003, “Magellan’s extraordinary skill as a strategist proved to be the …show more content…
This shows that Magellan is an expert in leadership and strategizing. Also, the same source states that Magellan “ordered lookouts” to see “the waterways and obstacles” in front of them. He also sent “small scouting parties” that reported what they found to the crew. Additionally, they warned Magellan against “rocky shoals” and other hurdles so he could navigate more easily. This was all under the supervision of Magellan, demonstrating his expertise as an explorer. This evidence shows that Magellan was a good navigator and was imperative to his crew. According to the map titled “Voyage of Magellan,” it is seen that he managed to cross the Atlantic Ocean, sailed into a strait that had never been navigated before, and then continued to cross the Pacific Ocean. This shows how he was able to sail through tough bodies of water and succeed due to his expertise. Overall, based on the evidence, Magellan was good at navigating the sea. The second reason that Magellan was worth defending is that he was a persistent captain. According to the note attached to the journal of a crewman known as the “Genoese Pilot” in the document, Magellan feared that his crew’s supplies “would not last the winter.” One can conclude that he put
When comparing the Chinese and Western historical development, the similar key events would have very different outcomes due to their different backgrounds. During the fifteenth century, Zheng He was commissioned to lead the “treasure ships” for seven voyages down the Western Seas. And, Prince Henry sent expeditions to explore the western coast of Africa. China and Portugal, the both ends of the Eurasian continent, almost simultaneously began marine navigations. They have shared some similar features, but there are actually major differences between the two. This paper will compare and contrast these two remarkable explorers. The focus will be on the ideas and circumstances that influenced their actions, and their importance in shaping history.
Freedom of Speech is a fundamental right that makes America the “land of the free.” But this right is abused by many people, and Philip Malloy is one of those individuals. Philip Malloy’s First Amendment Rights regarding his Freedom of Speech were not violated because there was a rule that he was informed about multiple times, but he still disrespected it.
Magellan treated his crewmen unfairly because he felt that he had total control over them. An employer should be provided benefits, Magellan did not provide living essentials. The crewmen would sleep on the wood floors because beds or at least hammocks were not provided. For the employer that does all the work a true captain should provide for his labor-men. Also, the
Another great navigator from Portugal was Henry the navigator, he was the prince of Portugal who began to establish an observatory and also a school of navigation, and he also directed many long voyages that ignited the growth of Portugal’s colonial empire.
und three hundred men. His journey took him around three years and while making this journey he was thinking about no one but himself. Magellan took all the credit for everything and without his crew members he would be nothing and could not have achieved half as much. He also ended up using violence to make people change they way they believe. Magellan was not worth defending and shouldn't get all the credit he does.
Supporters of the Age of Exploration believe James Cook was an example of a great explorer and a navigator. In his text/lecture “Cook’s Third Voyage”, Encyclopedia argues that in Hawaii he fought with the Hawaiians during his third voyage in 1779 and died leaving a legacy. Cook mapped lands from New Zealand to Hawaii, the great Barrier Reef of Australia, and the Pacific Ocean. He had a superior surveying and cartographic skills, physical courage and an ability to lead men in many different conditions. Based upon this research, it is clear that James Cook is significant because he’s a great seaman. This evidence supports
Christopher Columbus one of the most famous explorers with an extraordinary legacy was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. He was an Italian explorer and navigator and is very well known for his four voyages and his “discovery” of the New World. Columbus began sailing when he was just a teenager in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. Later, he moved to Lisbon, Portugal and then Spain where he spent the rest of his life. Columbus’ purpose was to find a passage to Asia by sailing West, but during his voyage he ended up in the Caribbeans and South America. Christopher Columbus was a famous navigator and explorer who was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. Columbus wanted to claim land for Spain so he could be rich and spread religion. He originally set out to find the East Indies for many reasons. One was that he hoped to establish trade routes and colonies in order to gain wealth. Another was that there were now bigger guns that could be strapped on ships so he felt that his voyage had more of a chance of being successful. The main reasons for his exploration was that he wanted to find a western route to Asia to find the riches that Marco Polo talked about in his book. So basically he was not courageous, he was just greedy. He intended on arriving in Japan on his first voyage, but instead, he arrived at the Bahamas archipelago. He ended up making numerous voyages and claiming the lands he visited for the Spanish Empire. Columbus continued voyages creating the first lasting European conta...
It is thought by many that Christopher Columbus was a skilled sailor on a mission of greed. Many think that he in fact did it all for the money, honor and the status that comes with an explorer, but this is not the case entirely. Columbus was an adventurer and was enthused by the thrill of the quest of the unknown. “Columbus had a firm religious faith and a scientific curiosity, a zest for life, the felling for beauty and the striving for novelty that we associate with the advancement of learning”. He had heard of the legendary Atlantic voyages and sailors reports of land to the west of Madeira and the Azores. He believed that Japan was about 4,800 km to the west of Portugal. In 1484, Columbus wanted support for an exploratory voyage from King John II of Portugal, but he was refused. In 1485, Columbus took his son Diego and went to Spain to get some help.
Christopher Columbus had two main motives for trying to find a sea route around the world to Asia. Columbus’ first reason was that he wanted the fame. He believed that the earth was round and according to his theory, the earth was only 18,000 miles in circumference (Symcox, 9). He believed that it would be faster to sail around the world to Asia than sailing around Africa. He wanted to be the first person credited for sailing around the earth to Asia. Columbus also wanted to make a name for his family. The second reason Columbus wanted to sail around the world was simple. He wanted to make money. Columbus’ want for fame and fortune drove him to create a sea route to Asia.
With a voyage like this, the decisions made will determine the likelihood of success. From the purchase of his ship, to the selection of his crewmembers, Shackleton needed to be a strong, yet, effective decision maker. Later on in the journey, his ability to make the judgment calls saved their lives several times.... ... middle of paper ... ...25-33.

Around the time of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, Europe was a place in need of inspiration. Marco Polo, a merchant, and still a simple man, was this source of inspiration. He was an ordinary boy during his childhood, living a similar life to the other boys his age. Although his intentions might not have been as significant as his impact, he was very influential. Marco Polo served as an influence to many later explorers. Whether it was through his book, The Travels of Marco Polo, which focused mainly on descriptions of spices and commercial goods and many other interesting trade items he encountered in his travels, he sparked an interest and desire of not only Europe, but later explorers as well . Marco Polo was viewed to have had definite charm and also having much capability. He has also proven that he was a tough man. This is evident because of the many voyages he survived, which included occurrences of bandit ambushes, disease, and not to mention the fatigue of the travel. There have been many who believe that Marco Polo was not intellectually equipped, meaning that he was not a very educated man, as no European probably was at the time . But as always, there is of course some speculation on the many aspects of the life of Marco Polo. Many people have their own beliefs of whom the real Marco Polo was and what he accomplished. There will be mention on some of the alleged negative, yet also positive aspects of his life. Despite all the accusations or assumptions of Marco Polo, history was affected as a result of his existence. He still remains an important figure in history.
First it was too risky of an expedition to put money towards and give your men for that trip and secondly who is to say that Columbus was really actually going on this voyage. You can tell that a lot of people liked to play things safe to where they knew what would happen. In the end King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella ended up getting very lucky. Not only were they able to convert many people to Christianity, but they also were able to collect gold without even having to do
