3In early 1520’s a man named Ferdinand Magellan circulated the world and was the first one to do it with five ships and aro und three hundred men. His journey took him around three years and while making this journey he was thinking about no one but himself. Magellan took all the credit for everything and without his crew members he would be nothing and could not have achieved half as much. He also ended up using violence to make people change they way they believe. Magellan was not worth defending and shouldn't get all the credit he does. One reason Magellan was not worth defending was because he cared about no one but himself. While on the ship Magellan would never feed his crew members good food or restock the little food they started with. He kept all the food that wasn't gross to himself and let the crew members eat whatever they could find around them. Most had to eat old biscuits with rat feces on them, ox hides, rats, sawdust and had to drink yellow water that had an atrocious smell to it. Most of these people ended up getting sick also or getting gum diseases causing their gum to swell up and causing them to not eat. Nineteen people died this way. Magellan did not care because it was not him if they died they died oh well. Very few …show more content…
of his crew were healthy and none of them were in good condition ever but Magellan didn't care it why would he he's healthy. Magellan was a god like figure so no one else really mattered right? Another reason Magellan was not worth defending is because he was a very berserk person.
Magellan was psycho and would do whatever he had to to get things his way. Magellan’s one of many dreams was to convert everyone to christianity and if they denied his request they were punished . One time Magellan went as far as setting a village on fire until it burned down because they wouldn't covert. Magellan’s way or no way he thought . Kill a couple people here and there but as long as everyone else converts it's okay for him to do all these things because he's Magellan. Magellan also has tried mutiny on his crew members that helped him get as far as he did in his journey . Anything to get his way he would do it without
hesitation. The last reason Magellan was not worth defending is even the people that were closest to him through this whole voyage hated him. Which shows that the people who dealt with him everyday saw something bad in him and wanted him gone. His crew members have tried mutiny on Magellan because they were over all of his tactics, self-indulgence, and felt like he was leading all of them to their deaths. They also tried getting him arrested in Spain but that unfortunately didn't work either. If the people who were with him everyday for three years, well if they made it three years hated him, then obviously that shows that he wasn't worth defending because the people that were suppose to be his allies wanted him dead and if that doesn't show how he wasn't worth defending when his crew members wouldn't even defend him, what will. Magellan overall was a repugnant person who would do anything to get his way . He killed, starved, and tortured people just because they wouldn't convert or just because it didn't effect him. He took all the credit for his journey and left his crew out to dry. Magellan may had made a big and unforgettable journey but did he really deserve to get all the credit he did ? no. Magellan was not worth defending and shouldn't get all the credit he deserved .
Magellan treated his crewmen unfairly because he felt that he had total control over them. An employer should be provided benefits, Magellan did not provide living essentials. The crewmen would sleep on the wood floors because beds or at least hammocks were not provided. For the employer that does all the work a true captain should provide for his labor-men. Also, the
Who is Christopher Columbus? You may already have prior knowledge of him, but if you do not, Christopher Columbus was a Spanish explorer who made four voyages to the Americas. His voyages led to the Columbian Exchange and colonization. Many cultures, ideas, technology, and foods were spread between the Americas, the “New World,” and Europe, Africa, and Asia, the “Old World”. Even though many great things were exchanged between the Old World and the New World, many diseases from Europe were introduced to the Natives. Does this make Christopher Columbus a hero, or a villain? The answer is not that debatable. A closer look must be taken at Christopher Columbus 's life to be able to judge such things. This essay will take a look at his life,
He wanted to find gold and seize power for spain and the king. “ He was anxious to please the king that he committed irreparable crimes against the indians” (Excerpt 6). Christopher Columbus didn’t know it was America he thought it was India, so he killed to get his way and find gold. Columbus didn’t want to disappoint the king so he searched for gold. “ Columbus never forgot that his voyage was not one of exploration, but of economics.
This voyage and all that Columbus wrote seems to have been done in greed. Columbus flattered the King and Queen repeatedly to win them over for his desired future endeavors. The first letter written to the King and Queen of Spain began immediately with overly exaggerated praise. In this matter, he could have directly addressed them with one endearing term rather than “Most Christian, High, Excellent, and Powerful Princes, King and Queen of Spain” (Halsall). He then describes his intent to “perform the embassy…discharge the orders… [and] keep an account…Sovereign Princes” as he prepares to write his journal. With this in mind, the demand of writing a journal and keeping track of his journey will keep him from sleeping and cause “many trials” all for “Your Highness.” When land was found, Columbus was the one who “bore the royal standard” when he went to shore and “took possession…for the King and Queen.
Christopher Columbus was a cruel, delusional, and self-centered man who does not deserve high praises for the discovery of America.
Another reason that King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella financed the voyage was because they wanted to spread religion. Specifically Christianity and Columbus, being a devout Catholic was enthusiastic about the idea. The deal was that every time Columbus discovered an island or land, he would have to give it to Spain so they would take control and have the opportunity to spread Christianity through missionaries. Religion was popular and had power around the world, but especially in Spain. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella then realized that if a trade route was open then they could spread Christianity and it would spread all the way to Asia, which would give Europeans more power and give Spain control over the Mediterranean.
...us brought America to the attention of the civilized world, to the growing, scientific civilizations of Western Europe. The result, ultimately, was the United States of America. It was Columbus’ discovery for Western Europe that led to the arrival of ideas and people on which this nation was founded on. The voyages of Christopher Columbus contain one of the great adventure stories of all time. His first journey across thousands of miles of unknown ocean, in the middle of the rebellious grievances and tensions of his crew, was not only one of the most significant achievements of recorded human history, but was also a demonstration of Columbus's dominance as mariner and navigator. For a while he had faults and defects, which brought turmoil to his personal life, but there was no flaw, no dark side to the most significant of all his qualities, of course his seamanship.
Christopher Columbus, most people have heard of him from school, the holiday or even ñsome one else. But what most people don't know is the full story.Columbus was brave a leader ,courageous, smart and adventurous,or was he a ruthless savage, that had millions of people killed in 14 years. Both sides of this debate have plenty of evidence. What you will read is that Columbus is not all bad and that his unacceptable actions did not happen in vain.
He had an important mission: find a way to the spice islands and bring back the riches, but most importantly bring the spices back with the five ships and 280 young men. Magellan was a great navigator but a harsh one. This can be good, until a leader refuses to listen to the ones he is leading. When Magellan stopped at the Port of St. Julian, he decided to put the crew on reduced rations (Document B). The change seems nearly unsurvivable compared to the conditions they were already struggling through, so they staged a mutiny. Three important leaders of the ships took the fall for this one. The treasurer of the whole fleet, Luis Mendoza was stabbed to death by the chief constable of the fleet, sent by Magellan (Document B). Gaspar de Quesada was ordered to be decapitated and quartered. Finally, Cartagena were abandoned on an island (Document B). Magellan was unwilling to reason with his crew members and instead removed what he saw was the problem. He issue was not the mutinous crew, but his own views. It did not take long for Magellan to anger more people. While crossing the Pacific, he added God to his list of things to sail for. On the island of Cebu, he converted about 2,200 people to Catholicism, but threatened those who did not convert (Document B). He burned down a village on Mactan, sparking a battle with the people ruled under the leader Lapu Lapu (Document B). In
Christopher Columbus was one of the most legendary sailors and explorers of all time. Christopher Columbus , an italian explorer, was born in the year of 1451 in the Republic of Genoa. Christopher Columbus was a teenager when he first set sail the ocean in 1465. He became a sailor in 1476 and started to travel many places before going on his largest voyage in 1480. In 1492, Christopher Columbus exploration to the New World linked Europe and the Americas. His discoveries enlightened the globe and started a new age of exploration. His standards and morals changed the history of the whole globe. He was known for traveling for all types of reasons for many foreign monarchs. But why would a monarch from one country be interested in employing an explorer from a foreign country to complete such an important task?
Around the time of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, Europe was a place in need of inspiration. Marco Polo, a merchant, and still a simple man, was this source of inspiration. He was an ordinary boy during his childhood, living a similar life to the other boys his age. Although his intentions might not have been as significant as his impact, he was very influential. Marco Polo served as an influence to many later explorers. Whether it was through his book, The Travels of Marco Polo, which focused mainly on descriptions of spices and commercial goods and many other interesting trade items he encountered in his travels, he sparked an interest and desire of not only Europe, but later explorers as well . Marco Polo was viewed to have had definite charm and also having much capability. He has also proven that he was a tough man. This is evident because of the many voyages he survived, which included occurrences of bandit ambushes, disease, and not to mention the fatigue of the travel. There have been many who believe that Marco Polo was not intellectually equipped, meaning that he was not a very educated man, as no European probably was at the time . But as always, there is of course some speculation on the many aspects of the life of Marco Polo. Many people have their own beliefs of whom the real Marco Polo was and what he accomplished. There will be mention on some of the alleged negative, yet also positive aspects of his life. Despite all the accusations or assumptions of Marco Polo, history was affected as a result of his existence. He still remains an important figure in history.
Christopher Columbus did inspire Ferdinand Magellan. I believe Magellan was best known for the first one to sail around the globe. He started his first expedition to sail all the way around the globe. He also enjoyed many things like sailing, exploring, he sailed for Portugal for many years.
Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492 and although it was a courageous thing to do he was a terribly religious person who desecrated the natives and only reached the western continents by luck. Columbus today is treasured among most Americans rightfully so considering many think he is the one responsible for colonization. Although contrary to what most believe Columbus was a marauding rapist who disrespected the natives and who America did not need or want.
First it was too risky of an expedition to put money towards and give your men for that trip and secondly who is to say that Columbus was really actually going on this voyage. You can tell that a lot of people liked to play things safe to where they knew what would happen. In the end King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella ended up getting very lucky. Not only were they able to convert many people to Christianity, but they also were able to collect gold without even having to do
Ferdinand Magellan was born in 1480 and lived until 1521. He was born in Sabrosa, Portugal to a family that had minor Portuguese nobility. When he was twelve years old, he and his brother moved to Lisbon where he served in Queen Leonora’s court. While serving there, he heard many stories of sea exploration and also learned a great amount of sea navigation skills. He heard stories about the Spanish and Portuguese rivalry for control over the spice trade in the East Indies. All of these stories sparked great interest for Magellan in the area of sea exploration since it promised great riches and fame.
