Walt Disney’s name is known all over the world but do people really know who he was? Millions of people visit Disneyland, Disneyworld, and watch his movies every year. Besides being one of the most well known celebrities ever, he had a life before the Disney name was worth millions. Disney’s life was anything but perfect, but that did not stop him from making everybody else 's lives feel like magic. Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5, 1901, at 2156 North Trip Avenue Chicago, Illinois to Flora Call-Disney, a teacher of German American descent, and Elias Disney, a building contractor of Irish Canadian descent (Bio.com, anb.org, disney.go.com). With all the fandom coming along with Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney formed the Mickey Mouse Club which promoted Disney films and products and taught members strong moral lessons. The Mickey Mouse Club reached its highest membership in 1932 which made them larger than the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of America combined (anb.org)! This was only one of Walt Disney’s many accomplishments.
On December 21, 1937, Disney released his first full length animated musical, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This movie made over one million dollars (Walt Disney Biography). For a couple years after the release of Snow White Disney held the patent for technicolor, making him the only animator allowed to make color films. At the 1938 Oscar Awards, Disney won one normal size honorary Oscar and seven miniature Oscars to represent Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Epcot opened about ten years later and sparked even more interest considering its theme was creativity of American industry (About Walt Disney). By the early 1990s the Disney name had even spread to Paris, France where a new Disneyland Theme Park opened on April 12, 1992 (Walt Disney Biography).
The Disney Company continues to produce films and television shows today and has developed into a multi-billion dollar corporation that carries his name. In total the Disney name owns five vacation resorts, eleven theme parks, two water parks, thirty-nine hotels, eight motion picture studios, six record labels, and eleven cable TV networks.
It has also produced 280 television shows, 78 half hour Zorro TV Adventures, 330 hours of Mickey Mouse television programs, seven True-Life Adventure features, forty-seven live action films, 493 short films, and twenty-one full length animated films, giving him more awards and nominations than any other individual in history and the numbers will keep going up for generations to come(World
