Walkout, the movie, described the way mexicans and latinos were treated in Chicago public schools. Latinos students had janitor work to do if gotten in trouble. The students can’t take it any more and begin to protest, that’s when the walkouts came to place. The students organized a group and protested, planned of how this can be stopped. They’re first move was to speak to the district and to notify them of how the latinos were being treated. The district didn’t listen or cared. That’s when the latino students knew they had to do something. They made surveys and handed them out to latinos in public schools all around Chicago. They thought that that would get the district’s attention but they still were apathetic to the situation. The organization

Auteur is a French word for author. The auteur theory was developed by Andrew Sarris, a well-known American film critic. Technical competence of the Auteur deals with how the director films the movie in their own style. Personal signature includes recurring themes that are present within the director’s line of work with characteristics of style, which serve as a signature. The third and ultimate premise of the Auteur theory is the interior meaning which is basically the main theme behind the film.
The movie “Walkout” is about young Chicano/a activists who demand educational equality. In 1968, students living in East L.A were treated unequally. Since, most of these students were Chicanos they were given few resources. One example was presented when Paula visited the Palisades library. In East Los Angeles, bathrooms were close during lunch breaks and students were forced to janitorial labor as forms of punishment. Throughout, the movie some themes that arose were regarding identity (What is a Chicano?), walkouts as forms of protest for equality, and gender expectations. It made me realize that those where kids who were around my age were fighting for their own kind, for students like me. The Chicano students began to notice the inequities when it came to education. They wanted a change in education such as they wanted better materials, teachers, administrators that would reflect Chicanos. Also a society where where speaking Spanish was allowed. Furthermore, that is why the walkouts were organized, it was meant to get the administration’s attention along with the district. According to Brown’s observations “the teachers try to stop it. They stand at the gate and try to shoo them back in. but the Chicanos are too many. The front of the school is a madhouse of excited Cockroaches” (39). The quotes show nothing but an image of the students fight for what they believe in, a change they seem to be waiting and will make it happen with excitement. WALKOUT is the story of a young protagonist, Paula Crisostomo, a 17-year-old high school senior at Lincoln High School in East Los Angeles. Paula, alongside schoolmates Yoli and Bobby Verdugo, are insulted by the discriminatory treatment towards Chicano learners in the L.A. public school system- including constantly lowered expectations, poor offices, a lack of bilingual courses or reading material, unfair punishments for slight infractions, demeaning corporal punishments, and refusal to write letters of recommendation to choice universities. With the help of a teacher at their high school, Sal Castro, they devise a plan to force the school board to listen to them an appeal to their requests. This encourages these students to challenges the power of their elders for the first time in their lives by arranging a mass student walkout at five barrio secondary schools. They experience a political change, which brings about them turning into an instrumental leaders of the infamous East LA walkouts.
One of the first documented incidents of the sit-ins for the civil rights movement was on February 1, 1960 in Nashville, Tennessee. Four college African-Americans sat at a lunch counter and refused to leave. During this time, blacks were not allowed to sit at certain lunch counters that were reserved for white people. These black students sat at a white lunch counter and refused to leave. This sit-in was a direct challenge to southern tradition. Trained in non-violence, the students refused to fight back and later were arrested by Nashville police. The students were drawn to activist Jim Lossen and his workshops of non-violence. The non-violent workshops were training on how to practice non-violent protests. John Lewis, Angela Butler, and Diane Nash led students to the first lunch counter sit-in. Diane Nash said, "We were scared to death because we didn't know what was going to happen." For two weeks there were no incidences with violence. This all changed on February 27, 1960, when white people started to beat the students. Nashville police did nothing to protect the black students. The students remained true to their training in non-violence and refused to fight back. When the police vans arrived, more than eighty demonstrators were arrested and summarily charged for disorderly conduct. The demonstrators knew they would be arrested. So, they planned that as soon as the first wave of demonstrators was arrested, a second wave of demonstrators would take their place. If and when the second wave of demonstrators were arrested and removed, a third would take their place. The students planned for multiple waves of demonstrators.
Through the first half of the movie, all the students were prone to dropping out. Where some wanted to inherit their family’s restaurant or auto shop or others just believed they couldn't do it because they were Mexican-American. This belief was drilled into their heads at a young age where once they got out of highschool, they would immediately start working. Mr. Escalante saw potential in his students and worked hard to make them realise they needed to challenge racial stereotypes and do things at their best ability. We learned that we should be able to struggle to achieve more without regards to our ethnicities. This film made us think how people these days are still being held back from their full potential because of race and how there are still people who hold stereotypes in this modern
The movie “Walkout” is about the school system in East Los Angeles in the late 1960’s. During this time Mexican Americans were treated unfairly and were seen as second class citizens. The story goes through the different aspects that Mexican American/ Chicano students had to put up with within their own schools. They wanted and deserved equal education, but were constantly shut down by the city. This movie contains the four characteristics of Mexican American Art, which is what gives this movies such a strong and meaningful message.

In March 1968, Chicano students decided to take a stand against the growing injustices that their community were still being subjected to and staged school walkouts across Los Angeles area. Some 20,000 students, both at the high school and college level, took to the streets to not just to walk out, but to organize and fight for what they believed they deserved as a community. For one, students wanted to address the fact that schools teaching a Eurocentric curriculum that largely ignored or denied Mexican-American history and bilingual classes. The school board believed that since they lived in the US, Mexican-Americans needed to adapt to their system instead of the system catering to them. According to the screenplay, Eastside High by Jason Johansen, a former teacher and professor of Latino film and media, the dropout rate among this school district was as high as fifty percent. Imagine seeing 10,000 of your classmates walking out of your school because they wanted a better education - a better way of life. In the 1960s’ Chicano students were being “pushed out”(Esparza) of school or being pushed towards vocational programs. East L.A was home to schools were “one out of every four Chicano’s completed high school”(Esparza). Instructors and the school board alike did not have an interest in helping Chicanos finish school to become someone other than a laborer and was expected of them to keep being a laborer. In “Taking Back the Schools”, Sal Castro a high school counselor claims, “I think the bottom line is the lack of concern of the teachers towards the kids and whether the kids were really getting an education or not...the reality set in that the teachers weren’t really concern for the kids.”(Esparza).
After watching the movie “The Break Up”, I can say that the protagonist Brooke Meyers and Gary Brobowski are a couple that live together in a condo where they share everything and care about each other. From the beginning to the end of the movie the couple experience different changes in their relationship, which start when they met in a baseball game, and end up when they decide to break up. This movie have clear examples of the different stages of interpersonal relationships, and how they affect us and our lives.
The four students got their idea for the sit in from a handout on tactics on resistance by CORE. The four students were considered hero’s to some African Americans. They were never served food but there sit in caused the shop to close 30 minutes early. When the students returned to their college campus they were greeted by fellow students and they were called heroes. Their idea motivated other students to join in on the sit in so on February 2nd, 24 students took part in a sit in at the same Woolworth’s food counter. Many white people started to realize what they were doing and why and that caused white female students from a North Carolina Women’s College to join the sit in. This sit in began to effect several segregated food counters throughout Greensboro. Later on the chaos of the sit-ins caused the Woolworth’s dinner to be forcefully closed.
