The Wabanaki communities have been a major factor in the past, present and future of our state of Maine. Observing how they structured their communities, their values and traditions could improve our present day communities greatly. Learning their communities perspectives on wealth and what they believed it means to be rich could cause less clashes and disagreements between individuals within a community. Living more simply like the early Wabanaki and abandoning the superfluous elements of our modern life would help solve classism in communities. Finally changing our clouded perspective on climate change to model the Wabanaki idea of environmental stability. By leading a more simplistic, community focused lifestyle, like the early Native Americans of Maine, we can continue to progress into a successful community of the future. Firstly, communities would benefit and have less disagreements by learning the Wabanaki perspective on what it means to be “rich” or what their idea of “wealth” meant. Living off of what you are given from nature is demonstrated by the early Wabanaki in many ways. Their beliefs of wealth have ties with the topic of simplifying. Many months had an abundance of natural resources that the Wabanaki could easily take advantage of. All individuals of the tribe were able collect only what was necessary sustaining their environment and also strengthening their ethical code. Simplifying and creating more equal communities would contest the segregation based on class or financial status, which still plagues our society and many communities
They believed in sharing what they have, especially any hunting or fishing gains, to others in the village to include the elders. Their worldview consists of principles, or ideals that made sense of the world around them. This view of the world enabled them to make artifacts (tools for hunting and fishing, clothing, and shoes to name a very few) that were apt for their world. Everything that they made was sufficient, efficient, renewable, natural, eco-friendly, and compatible to their worldview. This was done as to not offend the animals or harm the landscape.
A small archipelago off the northwest coast of Britsh Columbia is known as the “islands of the people.” This island is diverse in both land and sea environment. From the 1700’s when the first ship sailed off its coast and a captain logged about the existence, slow attentiveness was given to the island. Its abundance, in both natural resources physical environment, and its allure in the concealed Haida peoples, beckoned settlers to come to the island. Settlers would spark an era of prosperity and catastrophe for the native and environmental populations.

Many people are under a false impression that early Native Americans are the original environmentalists. This is an impression that many people share. The Abenaki tribes that resided in Maine from 3700 BP were not by our traditional definition, environmentalists. In fact they were far from ecologically sound. By analyzing the Kawaiisu, a Great Basin Native tribe, I want to explore cultural wonders and observe their society as I compare an aspect of interest with that of another culture in the world, the Chuuk. Comparing different societies of the world will allow me to successfully learn about the Kawaiisu people in a more detailed and open minded manner. Populations all around the world throughout time have had different views and traditions of beliefs. Through this project, I hope to unravel and gain an understanding of different perspectives and ways of life.
There is a deep relationship between the environment and Western Apache people. The bonds between the two are so strong that it is embedded in their culture and history. Keith Basso, author of Wisdom Sits in Places expanded on this theory and did so by divulging himself into Western Apaches life. He spent fifteen years with the Apache people studying their relationship with the environment, specifically concentrating on ‘Place-names.’ When Basso first began to work with the Apache people, one of his Apache friends told him to ‘learn the names,’ because they held a special meaning with the community. (Cruikshank 1990: 54) Place-names are special names given to a specific locality where an event took place that was significant in history and crucial in shaping morals and beliefs. Through the use of place-names, the environment became a teaching tool for Apache people.
This paper addresses the results of interviews, observations, and research of life in the Ottawa tribe, how they see themselves and others in society and in the tribe. I mainly focused on The Little River Band of Ottawa Indian tribe. I researched their languages, pecking order, and interviewed to discover the rituals, and traditions that they believe in. In this essay I revealed how they see themselves in society. How they see other people, how they see each other, what their values were, what a typical day was etc. I initially suspected that I would have got different responses from these questions but in reality the results in the questions were almost completely the same. I studied this topic because mostly all the people that are close to me are associated in the Ottawa tribe. I additionally love the Native American culture, I feel it is beautiful and has a free concept.

The social structure that formed around agriculture brought about the possibility of specialization within a society, since not everyone had to hunt and gather all the time.
