Why volunteer at a medical center like St.Joseph? St.Joseph Medical Center helps the needs of the public through their various medical centers. Not only would volunteering here give me the opportunity to give back to my community through these centers, but also further advance me on my career dreams. To begin, volunteering at St. Joseph would let me give back to the community. According to the Better Business Bureau, every volunteer saves approximately $15.39 per hour for the community they volunteer for. I will actively make sure every penny is saved and given to the community that has given so much to me. Joseph would be my first stepping stone to my career as a biomedical engineer. Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering into fields of medicine. My interest in this field sparked at the age of 7 when I stood upon the weight scale in a general checkup at the hospital and then later when the doctor pressed a button on her huge, clunky monitor and put the blood pressure device around my arm. These experiences spun me into curiosity on the car ride home and resulted in my parents frustration to all the questions that I had asked such as, “Why was the doctor’s machine so big?”, and “Where does m” all to which they answered with a sigh and the words “I don’t know”. To put an end to my questions My parents called my cousin who worked as a biomedical engineer to answer all my questions. After my questions were answered, I abruptly hung up and declared my commitment to the field. I am still deeply interested in this field to this day. Volunteering at St.Joseph Medical Center will help me get a feel of the machines and software being used as well as letting me observe upon how to make these more efficient, for I plan to participate in the Intel and Google Science Fairs in the near future with ideas of improvement upon current medical
