Throughout the course of this class I have had the opportunity to learn about the physiology of the human body and many different ways that can be used to measure one’s physical fitness level. In order to determine one’s fitness level, multiple tests can be performed to test different aspects of ones fitness and when these tests are combined together can be used to assess one’s overall fitness level. Coming into this class I was unsure of my fitness level and the areas in which I needed to improve, but I figured that my numbers wouldn’t be too terrible since I got to the gym about 3 times a week and spend a great deal of time walking. When determining one’s overall fitness level it is important to conduct multiple tests in order to assess all aspects of fitness such as weight, strength, and flexibility, which are all key components of fitness.
The first test performed was the VO2 Max test, which tests one’s aerobic capacity by using the 1 ½ mile run test to determine maximal oxygen consumption and for myself my VO2max was 34ml/kg/min which places me in the poor category. Next a muscular endurance test was completed to measure the ability to perform a repeated muscle action utilizing the same muscle and to achieve this a push up test was done in which I was able to perform 15 pushups consecutively, which is about average for those my age. After the muscle endurance test a flexibility test was performed using a sit and reach test, which determined that my flexibility places me in the range of 41-60% of my age group, which was a little bit better than my body strength score. To determine overall body strength a handgrip strength test was performed which placed my in the 43rd percentile. Lastly a skin fold test was done to determine the percentage of body fat, which unfortunately revealed that my body fat percentage was about 30%, which according to a chart online places me in the average category for my age
group. After looking at these numbers I was very sad and yet excited to see that some improvements needed to be made. In all of the categories I either placed average or poor, which is ok because that gives me some incentive to improve them by changing by diet and exercise routines. In order to improve my VO2max I plan on not only increasing my speed, but also I plan on spending more time outdoors running instead of on a treadmill and to improve muscular strength, flexibility, and body strength I plan on spending more time weight training, as well as, trying some yoga. Hopefully by making these changing I will not only get into better shape, but my percentage of body fat will drop, thus improving my overall fitness level.
Submaximal and maximal exercise testing are two analytic methods that can be used to examine the cardiovascular, and cardiorespiratory fitness/health levels of the individual being examined. Submaximal testing is usually preferred over maximal mainly because the submaximal exam is more practical in a fitness/health environment. Both test require the individual being examined to perform controlled exercise on a(n) treadmill/ergometer until either steady state has consecutively been reached (submax), or the individual reaches their max (close to it). Being that both test are set to exceed time limits of more than 3 minutes we examine the use of the ATP-PC, Glycolytic, and Oxidative energy systems. Although a huge portion of the test involves the use of the oxidative energy system, we must remember that the three systems are co-occurrent.
The Queens College/McArdle Step Test, the Rockport One Mile Walk Test, and the 1.5 Mile Run Test are three different field tests that were performed in this lab that were used to measure and predict an individual’s aerobic capacity. In this lab, we estimated the VO2 max for one subject on both the arm bike and treadmill. Estimating VO2 max is relevant because it allows the subject to compare their results with normal limits for their age and gender and see where they fall. It can also be used to make an exercise prescription in order to improve or keep a closer eye on your bodies own personal limits. Lastly, estimated VO2 max can be used as a diagnostic test to acquire information about a person’s health.

This lab experiment was conducted in a Texas Woman’s University exercise physiology lab room, on September 20, 2013. It consisted of two main participants: A trained participant (Male; 30 years old; 72 in. tall; 82.9 kg) and an untrained participant (Female; 20 years old; 65 in. tall; 75 kg). They were selected by my Prof. April Hartman to participate because they were best qualified to conduct the study in our class. Both participants were assigned to carry out the same experimental task. The Bruce Protocol (graded test) on a treadmill (mode of exercise) was used to conduct the VO2max test. The materials needed were: 1 metabolic cart (with computers); 2 mouthpieces; 1 nose clip; 1 treadmill; 1 RPE scale; 1 timer; pen; paper; and a HR monitor.
Exercise science possess many traits that attracted my attention whether it dealt with the different job opportunities or the ability to help an individual. There are two areas of exercise science that one can choose as a possible career path or as a major minoring in something else related to this type of work. To begin, the principal method of measurement of the human body fat is the body-mass index (BMI) which is related to the weight and height values to obtain an average (Renneboog, 2014, para.6). The author still states that “these arbitrary designations do not take into account individual characteristics such as body shape or natural muscularity, nor do they apply to children or seniors” (Renneboog, 2014, para.6). However, BMI not always is accurate and presents some limitations in measurement of body fat, sometimes classifying people as obese when in fact they are not. Since BMI is not 100% trustable it is acceptable that “this is one factor which requires more attention in the use of the term “overweight” and “obese”” (Eaton & Clydesdale, 2014, para.10). In this lab, body measurements are taken to find the body percent fat, waist-to-hip ratio, body mass index (BMI), and basal metabolic rate (BMR). Skin folds for the chest, abdomen, and thigh were taken for males, and triceps, iliac crest, and thigh for females.
