NED KELLY Ned Kelly, directed by Gregor Jordan, is a film focused around the notorious bushranger, Ned Kelly. It is about a blameless man who turns into the most wanted criminal the world has ever perceived. The film is situated in the degenerate society of Melbourne, victoria in the late 1800s. Violence and integrity are the ideas of this film, and are depicted through character and imagery. The conceptualization of violence is portrayed through the character of Ned, the protagonist. Ned does not wish to be violent; he does it to abide repute. The Kelly gang remained up for what is ethically right. When Ned robs a bank he burns everyone’s mortgages. He does this for the benefit of others. In the film, Ned is portrayed as the benevolent guy and the police are depicted as the deplorable guys. When Ned purloins another bank, he is amiable to the hostages, which is unexpected, as you would cerebrate that a larceny would contain violence. Ned uses the phrase “such is life”, which denotes to do something that should be relatively facile, but it becomes hard because of other influences. The conceptualization of deception and cultural fear are conveyed through the setting of simplicity and the Chattering World, which can be contrasted to each other. In the Chattering world, the leaders do not have the same power regarding the resources and power that they have in their population. The comparison through both settings conveys how a community, completely untouched by the media responds differently to a society whose lives are controlled by the media. This is discerned through the tradition of shaking hands at Simplicity, in which Taylor believes shaking hands “spreads germs that way…haven’t you heard of the plagues”. The difference with both worlds is distinguished through things like the media manipulating people to believe that shaking hands with someone can give you a disease. There are correlations with the chattering world and our reality. This vigilances the reader that there is a risk that our society can turn into one much like the Chattering
