Orson Scott Card’s science fiction novel Ender’s Game shows how violence is a necessity to win a war. The definition of war is “a state of armed conflict”. War is a form of violence. Without violence, you can’t win a war. You will get destroyed if someone kills you and you won’t retaliate. The only way to win is to fight violence with violence. You must kill them before they kill you. Without violence, you would not be able to survive a war. To win a war, you must use violence to eliminate the enemy. In the book, it says,”And then he thought of the films of the buggers that everyone had to see at least once a year. The Scathing of China. The Battle of the Belt. Death and suffering and terror. And Mazer Rackham and his brilliant maneuvers, destroying an enemy fleet twice his size and twice his fire-power, using the …show more content…
And we won”(pg. 25). The buggers continued to kill the humans. If they don’t fight back, they will end up being wiped out. The buggers aren't sympathetic, they won’t stop attacking just because you aren’t retaliating. Overall, in order to survive, you must protect yourself by killing them first. Winning war comes at a cost. You must be willing to eliminate the enemy. If you choose not to, then they will kill you. Right before the fight between Ender and Bonzo, Ender thought this,”But this time it will be my body that breaks, unless I can break him first”(pg.209). In order to survive, you must eliminate the opponent before he can do it to you. The same goes for war. Another key passage that explains why we need violence is this,”’You made the hard choice, boy. All or nothing. End them or end us. But heaven knows there was no other way you could have done it. Congratulations! I am very happy with this. You beat them, and it’s all over’”(pg. 296). Graff praised Ender after he had won the war for them because he knew it was either them or the buggers. Ender had to kill the buggers in order to ensure their safety as
In Orson Scott Card’s novel, Enders Game, at the age of six, Ender is chosen by Colonel Graff and the International Fleet to help save mankind from the buggers. However, through his journey, he experiences manipulation and deception from significant figures that surround his life. This deceit from Colonel Graff, Valentine, and Mazor Rackham is focused on defeating the buggers in the Third Invasion.
“Ender’s Game”, by Orson Scott Card, is a military science fiction novel that narrates the story of a boy named Andrew “Ender” Wiggin and his predetermined life to save humanity. Set in the future, humans are at war with an alien insect race dubbed the “buggers.” The buggers have already invaded Earth two times previously and did not succeed because of Mazer Rackham, the general that won the second invasion. Expecting a third invasion of the buggers, the International Fleet (I.F.) has trained child geniuses at very young ages through games that gradually increase in difficulty including the zero gravity battle rooms in preparation for them to become commanders of the Third Invasion.
They wanted Ender to see that it was a game because this would insure that the humans would be victorious over the buggers. Because of this, Ender has suffered a great ordeal of losses in everything such as life, love, family, and friendship. At this point of my explanation, we can clearly see that Ender does suffice enough to be a Christ Figure because he began his journey with a full heart and now he is ending his journey with nothing left but a new world to live in with Valentine, while trying to find a safe place for the Queen Bugger to live. This is his last and most important mission of all. It looks like as if Ender is beginning a whole new journey. Truth be told, Ender is done, but he has that final step to go before he can call out to home and finally live the rest of days free of
Leading up to that he faces enemies and obstacles in the form of bigger kids and the games that he wins thoroughly, to the point where he cannot be beat. He always is one set ahead of whatever is thrown at him. Until Ender finds the Bugger Queen pupa.” Reached into the cavity and took out the cocoon.” (Card 321) Here in this scene Ender is going against what we have come to see as part of who he is. He has the intent to allow the Buggers to rebuild and try to live along side of humans. Normally he destroys something so thoroughly that it can never hurt him or the people he is fighting for again. This is perhaps one of the very best examples of the theme that one’s past does not define them or their
One reason that shows that this book is anti-war is how Ender’s life changed in a bad way. For example, when Ender found out that he was not playing a game, but he was really commanding armies to fighting the bugger, he cried “I didn’t want to kill them all. I didn’t want to kill anybody! I’m not a killer! You didn’t want me, you bastard, you wanted Peter, but you made me do it, you tricked me into it!” (Card, 297). This quote explains that after killing the buggers Ender is somehow showing that he is not himself anymore. The war has forced him to kill the buggers or anyone without knowing. Even though he found out in the end, but he still can not control the shockness and guiltiness of killing anyone since he never wanted to kill anyone but he did, and he had to, in order to go back to his
“The only way to end things completely was to hurt him enough that his fear was stronger than his hate (Page 211).” – Andrew “Ender” Wiggin. Fear and the power of fear are very delicate things. If someone has too much fear, it turns to anger. Not enough fear, and they have no respect. The book Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card is about fear, especially of the unknown, and the controlling power it has.
In Ender’s Game, a science fiction novel written by Orson Scott Card, many people meet many challenges that make them move forward. One of the challenges involved in this novel is isolation. Graff isolates Ender, the protagonist, because he has an excellent mind (Card 34). In addition, the World Government trusts Ender to defeat the buggers, which will destroy the entire human race, in the next invasion (Card 34). Therefore, isolation makes him prepare to become a stronger person. Another challenge discovered in this novel is the struggle between Ender and Bonzo. According to Card, Ender gains respect from his friends, since he wins the battle between Ender’s Dragon’s army and Bonzo’s Salamander’s army (Card 181-182). As a matter of fact, Bonzo cannot accept the lost (Card 195). Prior to Ender’s leadership in his army, Bonzo is cruel, he gives a lot of orders, and one incident is when he has slapped Ender for disobeying him (Card 77, 86-87, 95). One day, after the battle, Bonzo and his friends surround Ender in the shower room and plan to kill him (Card 207-208)...
Crucial elements in Ender’s game are the Bugger threats which appear in both the book and movie. We see the Bugger threat as the main incentive for a better military. Another
After much internal debate Ender decides to go to battle school and leave home. He knows he won’t see his family until he is at least 12 but most likely he will have to wait until he is 16. When Ender is inside the ship on the way to battle school, the adults start their manipulation game. Graff calls out Ender as the only one who will save mankind, making the other kids hate Ender and become envious. Ender already lost the chance at having a normal childhood when he was born a third, but he was also considered to be the chosen one to save mankind from the very beginning. The manipulation of Ender is shown through the book and the children at the school either take part in his abuse or ignore the adults who cause it. Through this abusive training tactic Ender becomes the skilled fighter and leader the government wants. Ender gets moved through the program fast. He gets to the command school at age 9, a school no one can go to until they are sixteen. The adults tell him he will be doing simulations to practice the attacks on the buggers, but after the last simulation he finds out he killed the entire bugger species. The novel shows Ender to be morally innocent throughout his story, but he takes on the guilt of xenocide of the buggers. He is shocked at what he did, even when he didn’t know what he’s doing. Ender loses his innocence at this moment. He knew he was being manipulated by the adults throughout his career at the battle schools, but he had no idea he was being manipulated into exterminating a whole race. When he realizes what he did he goes into another depression slump and does not come out of his room for days. He doesn’t understand why he was manipulated into what he
Child labor is the use of children in industry or business, especially when illegal or considered inhumane. Children all over the world can be forced into indentured slavery, working for long hours with no pay. Some groups are taking action against this through legal action, while others are working to bring the problem to worldwide attention. In “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card, the author addresses the human rights issue known as child labor, which is still a problem in today’s world.
Ender’s Game involves five types of conflicts. Man vs. Man: According to the children, “The teachers, they’re the enemy. They get us to fight each other, to hate each other…the old bastards are watching us, studying us, discovering our weak points, deciding...
How is it that in the year 2016 violence is not only increasing but is also being accepted at a startling rate? Most teenagers in modern days believe “that it was acceptable for a boyfriend to act aggressively towards his partner in certain circumstances.” (Statistics). If teenagers today believe that acting aggressively towards your partner is okay, will they grow to believe that other forms of violence are acceptable as well? Will they create a world where domestic violence, rape, and murder are “no big deal”?

This story is about a young boy that lives in a world that is constantly under attack from extraterrestrials called the Buggers. In the middle, he is taken to battle school and there the people realize that he is the best person for the job and will lead the human race to victory over the Buggers. Lastly, the IF puts Ender and his group together to beat the buggers in a final war. The book “Ender’s Game” written by Orson Scott Card is a fun and exciting science fiction book that leaves the reader at the edge of its seat. The symbolism and hidden messages in the book make the reader connect to the story. The title, the characters, and the setting all have something more to bring to the table and change
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton proves the point that violence can be justified if necessary. To inflict change in their lives people often fight with violence instead of peace to evoke change. The world strives for change everyday whether or not you like it. How the people create a change in society whether they use peace or war, it is up to them to decide how to modify our ever changing world. Violence and fight between the Socs and Greasers tells us that both can be justified if it inflicts positive change in society. ‘
War has always been, and will always be, a necessary action perpetrated by man. There are many reasons for war: rage, passion, greed, defense, and religion to name a few. When differences cannot be solved or compromised through mediation with an opposing party, war is the last remaining option. Muslim historian Ibn Khaldun wrote in fourteenth-century Spain, that “War is a universal and inevitable aspect of life, ordained by God to the same extent as the sky and the earth, the heat and the cold. The question of whether to fright is not a significant moral question because fighting is constant; the minor decision not to fight this war will be made only in the context of knowing that another war will present itself soon enough because it is simply always there.” (Peter S. Themes. The Just War)
