Victor Frankenstein: The Real Monster
Science is a broad field that covers many aspects of everyday life and existence. Some areas of science include the study of the universe, the environment, dinosaurs, animals, and insects. Another popular science is the study of people and how they function. In Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Dr. Victor Frankenstein is an inspiring scientist who studies the dead. He wants to be the first person to give life to a dead human being. He spends all of his time concentrating on this goal, and gives up his family and friends. When he finally accomplishes this, everything falls apart. So, Victor Frankenstein is to blame for the tragedy, not the monster he has created, because he is the mastermind behind the whole operation, and he is supposed to have everything under control, working properly as a good scientist should do.
Although some critics say that the monster Victor has created is to blame for the destruction and violence that follow the experiment, it is Victor who is the responsible party. First, Victor, being the scientist, should have known how to do research on the subject a lot more than he had done. He obviously has not thought of the consequences that may result from it such as the monster going crazy, how the monster reacts to people and things, and especially the time it will take him to turn the monster into the perfect normal human being. This is obviously something that would take a really long time and a lot of patience which Victor lacks. All Victor really wants is to be the first to bring life to a dead person and therefore be famous. The greed got to his head and that is all he could think about, while isolating himself from his friends and family. In the play of Frankenstein, when Victor comes home and sets up his lab in the house, he is very paranoid about people coming in there and finding out what he is doing. At the end of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Victor says:
I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body. For this I deprived myself of rest and health.
Victor Frankenstein may be the leading character in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, but a hero he is not. He is self-centered and loveless, and there is nothing heroic about him. There is a scene in Chapter twenty-four where Captain Walton is confronted by his crew to turn southwards and return home should the ice break apart and allow them the way. Frankenstein rouses himself and finds the strength to argue to the Captain that they should continue northwards, or suffer returning home "with the stigma of disgrace marked on your brows." He quite obviously has alterior motives and if he were not the eloquent, manipulative creature he so egotistically accuses his creature of being, he might not have moved the Captain and the men so much that they are blind to the true source of his passion. Unfortunately for Frankenstein, the crew, (however "moved") stand firm in their position. Yet the things he says in his motivational speech are prime examples of the extent to which Frankenstein is blind to his own faults and yet will jump at the chance to harangue others. He is so self-centered that his lack of interaction and love for others after his experiment has been completed, would barely qualify him as a person, if the difference between being human and being a person lies in the ability to have relationships with others.

As a tragic hero, Victor’s tragedies begin with his overly obsessive thirst for knowledge. Throughout his life, Victor has always been looking for new things to learn in the areas of science and philosophy. He goes so far with his knowledge that he ends up creating a living creature. Victor has extremely high expectations for his creation but is highly disappointed with the outcome. He says, “I had desired it with an ardour that far exceeded moderation; but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart” (Shelley 35). Nationalism at this time was seen as a tool used by those in power to control a nations. By this time, Paul and his friends are “seduced” into the army by the nationalists ideas. They have also realized that their enemy really isn't the others, its the men who had power in their OWN nation. This shows how Paul and the others have indeed themselves involved in the spread of their nationalism which regards to thinking of right and wrong. As the boys continue through the rough training given by Corporal Himmelstoss, they realize what they have gotten themselves into. In training, Himmelstoss's ideas and drills drag on to make the boys despise him. Even though Corporal Himmelstoss made the boys do horrible things as to stand out in the cold risking frostbite, and gruesome practices and training, they boys have realized what Corporal Himmelstoss has only done the things to make them stronger and without the training, there would be no way they would have made it through the brutal war. But, by the end of the novel, Himmelstoss tries to make amends to the boys, and yet they have realized what Himmelstoss has done for them is what still kept them alive.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is a nineteenth century literary work that delves into the world of science and the plausible outcomes of morally insensitive technological research. Although the novel brings to the forefront several issues about knowledge and sublime nature, the novel mostly explores the psychological and physical journey of two complex characters. While each character exhibits several interesting traits that range from passive and contemplative to rash and impulsive, their most attractive quality is their monstrosity. Their monstrosities, however, differ in the way each of the character’s act and respond to their environment. Throughout Frankenstein, one assumes that Frankenstein’s creation is the true monster. While the creation’s actions are indeed monstrous, one must also realize that his creator, Victor Frankenstein is also a villain. His inconsiderate and selfish acts as well as his passion for science result in the death of his friend and family members and ultimately in his own demise.
Through these areas, the impact of the Whitlam government can be clearly seen as a government with a vision to change Australia drastically, to create a fairer and better society, not only for the present, but for the future.

Pearson has crafted one of the most influential political speeches of all time, exploring the political life of Gough Whitlam, a controversial Australian Prime Minister, as his term in office was turbulent and his position never certain, who introduced a number of policy measures and social reforms. Pearson explores this as though his time in government was transitory Whitlam was adamant in establishing a political solution to the problem of disunity within Australia, similar to King Henry and his desire to unite England, highlighted through use of an idiom, “devil-may-care attitude to management as opposed to reform is unlikely to be seen again by government priorities to retain power.” This further highlights the uncertainty of political power as Pearson’s underlines through juxtaposition that though loved by many he was also castigated. The repetition of the intertextual rhetorical question, “and what did the romans ever do for us anyways?’ followed by Parson’s listing of Whitlam's achievements contradicts the jurisdiction that people are ill minded towards his time in power. This hypophora proving to the audience that Whitlam’s political power caused great change as he uses anthropomorphism to state that, ‘cosmopolitan Australia emerged like a Technicolor butterfly’. The people that boasted about the war even after realizing it was going to be a slaughter house are criminals. Using phrases like “Glorious,” “Fight for the Fatherland,” and “It is your duty,” promoted young men to enlist, even after the death toll was high. An example of these types of people in the movie is when Paul goes back to his homeland during leave. Paul is disturbed by his visit to the beer garden and old classroom, here he realizes that his town’s older men, in their enthusiasm for war, have no idea what is actually happening on the front. This scene shows how it is always the young generation that has to enlist and fight in war, while the older more privileged men discuss war strategy over some alcohol. War has been disorientated ever since the supposedly “leaders” left the front line to lead from the rear, where they were safe from any chance of being killed. To send a sixteen year old to their death while claiming it is for the “Good of the Fatherland” is the supreme way to show how much of a coward you truly are. In 1816, a time accompanied with great political and industrial revolutions, Mary Shelley wrote the novel Frankenstein. While Frankenstein comments upon some modern anxieties —parenthood, isolation and abandonment— the novel also touches upon the meaning and fears behind bioethics and scientific discovery. The idea of science and discovery develops into this horror story, in which the scientific ambition’s of Victor Frankenstein harms mankind and himself rather than helping it. Tampering with or altering nature also stems from this fear of scientific discovery as well. Through analyzing the journey and aftermath of Victor Frankenstein’s monstrous creation, Mary Shelley questions the sake of scientific discovery and deems its effects to be detrimental.
Because of Victor’s need for fame and desire for power leads to Victor becoming a monster. Victor begins his quest to bring life to a dead person because he does not want anyone to feel the pain of a loved ones death. At first he is not obsessed with his project. As he moves along in the project he thinks about what will happen to him. "Life and death appeared to me ideal bounds, which I should first break through, and pour a torrent of light into our dark world. A new species would bless me as its creator and source, many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me." (Shelley 39) He realizes that he will become famous if he accomplishes the task of bringing a person back to life. The realization that he will become famous turns him into an obsessive monster. He wanted to be admired, and praised as a species creator. As a romantic novel Victor is responsible, because he abandoned his creation. As an archetype novel, Victor is the villain, because he was trying to play god. Finally, Victor as a Gothic novel, Victor is at fault, because, he and the creature are two different parts of the same person. If Frankenstein is looked at as a romantic novel, Victor, not the creature, is truly the villain. When Victor created the creature, he didn't take responsibility for it. He abandoned it, and left it to fend for itself. It is unfair to bring something into the world, and then not teach it how to survive. The creature was miserable, and just wanted a friend or someone to talk to. On page 115, the creature said, "Hateful day when I received life! Accursed the creator. Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turned from me in disgust." This line shows the agony the monster was in, because of how he looked when he was created which led to even Victor running away from him. If Victor didn't run, he could have taught the monster and made his life happy.
