Mary Shelley established a central theme that I think was most prevalent – ambition– in the first lines when the perspective was from Robert Walton, but the initial moment where Frankenstein showed ambition and passion was later. Walton wrote to his sisters, “Six years have passed since I resolved on my present understanding. I can, even now, remember the hour from which I dedicated myself to this great enterprise.I voluntarily endured cold, famine, thirst, and want of sleep; I often worked harder than the common sailors during the day and devoted my nights to the study of mathematics, the theory of medicine.” (p.2-3). Victor’s assertion highlights his conviction that historical milestones arose from individuals prioritizing ambition In reflecting on his research into reanimation, Frankenstein remembered, “I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body” (p.35). He then describes how he spent several years on his creation, depriving himself of sleep, food, and contacting his family. His ambition leads to obsession and this takes a personal toll on his health and relationships. Right after the quote aforementioned, Victor Frankenstein writes, “I had desired it with an ardor that far exceeded moderation; but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart” (p.35). His unrestrained passion to create a new species that worships and follows his commands clouded the perception that there could be consequences for his creation. Mary Shelly conveys through his evidence that while ambition is necessary for success, if unchecked, it has the potential to become evil.
