Both Victor Frankenstein and the creature seek revenge against each other, due to different motives. In the novel Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein, an aspiring scientist, works in a lab and succeeds in creating a living being. Mary Shelley, the author, uses revenge as a theme and a driving force for both characters throughout the novel Frankenstein. The creature's revenge quest results in the deaths of Victor’s loved ones and guilt for both Victor and the creature. The creature’s quest for revenge eventually leads Victor to seek vengeance against his creation. Victor is motivated to get revenge because he killed most of his loved ones and caused an immense amount to Victor. After the creature requests a female partner and Victor complies, Victor realizes that what he’s doing is bad for society. He is outraged at the creature for making him his slave and destroys his progress on the second creature. After the creature sees this, he runs off and Victor says “I burned with rage to pursue the murderer of my peace” (Shelley 163). Victor saying this proves that the creature has made his life hell and ruined all the peace he had in his life. After Elizabeth is murdered and Alphonse dies, Victor devotes the rest of his life to pursuing and killing the creature. Victor, with no loved ones left, uses the idea of payback against the creature as his only motivation to live.
