Introduction When I was growing up and always playing with animals, I realized what I might want to do with my life. Since animals are, for the most part, vulnerable and helpless, they need someone to take care of them. For animals in need to survive and carry on, there must be a caring person willing to take time out of their day to care for these animals. This person is responsible for providing care such as feeding, cleaning, giving water and administering medication to animals in veterinary offices, zoos, laboratories or animal hospitals. You also must deal with the animals in a safe, humane manner. You must be very aware of the proper procedures for using certain tools and also follow specific procedures for tasks as simple as placing animals in cages. You must know all of the terminology in your practice. Employment of veterinary assistants that work mainly in clinics is projected to grow 10% until 2022. High occupational turnover will result in good job opportunities. (Summary) Union There are no union opportunities for this career. Information Learned from Career-Related Activities I had the opportunity to attend the career fair at the Blair County Convention Center as a sophomore. At that time, I had the chance to gain some additional information from a professional veterinarian. Geographic Areas for Employment Opportunities Veterinary assistants are needed in all areas of the country. I feel that veterinary assistants would be needed in large demands in rural areas because of all the farming industries. Also in larger cities there are more people therefore there are more pets. In Pennsylvania, veterinary assistants are needed throughout the whole state. Postsecondary Schools or On-the-Job Training As mentioned before, college is not a necessity to become a veterinary assistant; therefore, no colleges have specific courses to take for this career. Some colleges carry animal science which could be useful in this career field, but probably wouldn’t give me enough hands-on training in this field.
