Divergent is the first book of a series written by Veronica Roth. It is about a world after a war that covered the world; the plot was in Chicago, where everyone, after reaching 16 years old, has to join one of the five factions for the rest of their lives. The novel was voted the best young adult fiction book of the year by a lot of literary observers.
The novel is about a 16 year-old girl, Tris who is about to join one of the factions named after how they respond to certain problems: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. The members of Abnegation, in which Tris has been born and raised, are able to act selflessly and sacrifice themselves to help others in need. Amity is peace and kindness. Candor honesty, because its members believe it was lies and deception that caused wars in the past. Dauntless is strength and courage. The Erudite are intelligence,

curiosity, and knowledge. Before the Choosing Day, Tris finds out she is divergent. It means she reacted towards more than just one faction. Tris has a potential to join Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. She was told to keep it a secret, or her life would be in danger, because faction leaders kill divergents. Tris wants to join Dauntless; to do it, she has to pass certain challenges. Tris was tested to see if she was in good physical condition; she also had to face virtually simulated fears; and last of all, she had to face her personal fears. Tris passed all the tests and joined the Dauntless. After a while Tris finds out the Erudite faction is making plans to take over the Abnegation faction. In their plans, the Erudite try to use the Dauntless to their advantage. When the new Dauntless members pass the test and get adopted by the Dauntless, they are all injected with a fake tracker. One night, the “tracker’ turns all the Dauntless into brainwashed mind-controlled slaves, and makes them attack the Abnegation faction. Tris and her teacher Four are divergents, so the “tracker” does not affect them; they try to escape, but they are caught by the Erudite. They are injected with a new version of the “tracker”, designed especially for divergents. Then Tris is saved by her mom who is also a divergent.
During the escape, Tris finds her brother Caleb. But in the process her parents get killed. Then Tris saves Four, and together they are able to free the Dauntless from the “trackers” influence.
What is the idea that the author is communicating about family as presented in my text? All teenagers go through a time where they break away from their families to try and find their own identity. As teenagers grow older they often wish to return to the safety of their families. What is the narrative perspective in my text? It is told in a first person narrative by Tris Prior. It’s told in the present tense: “I sit on the stool and my mother stand behind me with the scissors, trimming” (pg 1); “I am in darkness. The last thing I remember is the metal chair and the needle in my arm” (pg 251).
How is this idea communicated by the author? In the main idea of the book Tris replaces her family with a different family group. (even though she is Divergent and doesn’t belong with Dauntless either) “faction before blood”. Her brother Caleb chooses
‘Erudite’. That was what i had for the summary. In all I believe this was an amazing book and I can’t wait to read the rest of the trilogy. My favorite part of the book was how they kept me hooked on it the whole time and I couldn’t get away from it. I spend 5 hours reading in one day (That’s a lot with how busy i am). And I am super excited to see how well i did on this essay.
The author uses different points of view to create tension in the story. The mom acts in a way that neglects the daughters interests. This makes them both feel less connected and leaves the daughter feeling hopeless. In paragraph 9, “‘It’s strange actually. I wasn’t expecting it, but then at the last minute the funding came through.’ She folded her arms across her waist. ‘I’m going to Costa Rica to finish my research.” This made the narrator/daughter angry and flustered with her mom’s actions. She has trouble remaining connected with her parent because they both want different things which leaves on character feeling betrayed. “Opportunity? For me? Or for you?” (34). Both of their actions and responses create tension in this story. Their communication lacks and this results in pressure on both
This book has great balances of love interests, actions, and internal conflict with characters. It has an interesting story so far with new pieces coming up every few chapters that are very important. Like Al attacking Tris, Eric talking about Divergents and how the rebels must be eliminated. Tris and Four are developing feelings for each other, which I find weird because he is basically her teacher. They are only two years apart, so the relationship is not that awkward. In this journal I will be predicting, evaluating, and questioning.
Not every teenage girl or teenager gets along with their parents. Everyone sees things in different way. the difference in the point of view provokes the narrator's response, because they both see in a different view that they think their parents is selfish and neglecting or don't care about them but really their parents are helping them.
This book teaches the importance of self-expression and independence. If we did not have these necessities, then life would be like those in this novel. Empty, redundant, and fearful of what is going on. The quotes above show how different life can be without our basic freedoms. This novel was very interesting and it shows, no matter how dismal a situation is, there is always a way out if you never give up, even if you have to do it alone.
The film, “The Way, Way Back”, is a coming of age film that exhibits a summer where adult responsibilities are diminished and children are left to take care of themselves. The film is very relatable to many families today who have had to deal with divorce, parents dating, step-parents and siblings. The film focuses on a boy named Duncan and his difficultly as he overcomes his parents’ divorce and his mothers her boyfriend, Trent. Duncan is an introverted adolescent who discontentedly joins his mother to temporarily live with her long-time boyfriend and daughter for the summer; ultimately to determine if blending their families long term would be a wise choice. In this essay, I will analyze the film through a sociological lens by specifically
First of all, in order to have an interesting story you will have to have a tone of voice that contributes equally to the meaning of the story. According to Divergent, “I want to be brave, and selfless, and smart, and kind, and honest.” This quotes supports the idea that Tris can in fact fit into all factions and therefore is divergent. Tris, faces with this conflict of being divergent since it is looked down upon. But, even though she faces this serious situation, she has a strong and powerful mindset throughout the journey.
And choose wrong?” (P.98). From reading this, I feel that the community was able to control problems such as divorce, rape, teen pregnancy, and AIDS. They all are given a life that is predictable, orderly and painless. Mostly, they have no memory or experience. In reality, we learn from our mistakes to be better each day. Experience is the best teacher in the world; unless one goes through sorrow, he or she will never know how it feels. “Warmth, Jonas replied and happiness. And let me think. Family, that it was a celebration of some sort, a holiday. And something else I can’t get the word for it. Jonas hesitated; I certainly liked the memory, though. I couldn’t quite get the word for the whole feeling of it, The Giver told him the feeling that was so strong in the room is love” (P.125). Family in the novel is described as a group of people that have a unit or bond that they share each day together.
...eful to show us, the narrator is not the only self-centered, melodramatic member of this family. Given the family history, we can be fairly sure that things will soon be back to normal. The narrator will move back home, and the family, welcoming the diversion, will no doubt find a way of turning her homecoming into a new round of excitement.
The most remarkable thing about literature is its effect on society and the individual. Every once in a while a book is published that truly relates to those who read it. Divergent just so happens to be one of those books. Divergent is an extreme take on the differences of what virtues humans value to form the perfect society. The book’s contents are almost philosophical, acting as sustenance for the heart and soul, meanwhile highlighting the many problems we face in modern society through quotes in a subliminal fashion that coincide wonderfully with the story. One such quote can be found on pg.441 and it reads ‘’ Human beings as a whole cannot be good for long before the bad creeps back in and poisons us again.’’ It almost breaks the 3rd wall. Human beings were born with both flaws and goodness. We are a double edged sword with extreme potential on both points. Deep down there is something dark in everybody. There are those who can control it and those who are weak and succumb to it.
...e rest of her family and becomes determined to stop this horrible situation. Her brother, dad, and Four’s abusive dad join her in her journey. They head toward the Dauntless headquarters. They head towards the top level where the simulation causing everyone to act this way is being run from. On the way Tris’s father is killed trying to fight off some Dauntless guards. Tris makes it to the top and finds that her love, Four, is running the simulation. She knows she has to kill him. They get in a big fight and at one point she has a gun pointed straight at him, but she can’t kill him. She turns the gun around and gives it to him. This confuses him and wakes him up from his trance. They then stop the simulation and escape together. The book ends with Four, Tris, Four’s abusive dad, and Tris’s brother riding away on a train away from all the chaos on the city.
The author uses imagery, contrasting diction, tones, and symbols in the poem to show two very different sides of the parent-child relationship. The poem’s theme is that even though parents and teenagers may have their disagreements, there is still an underlying love that binds the family together and helps them bridge their gap that is between them.
In the short story “To Set Our House in Order,” written by Margaret Laurence, the narrator, Vanessa, is an adult looking back at an important event from her childhood. This story represents Vanessa’s grandmother Macleod as a very negative woman who is having so many troubles that her son and his family have moved into her house to help since she can no longer afford a housekeeper when the depression goes bad. In my childhood, my experience with my father was similar to Vanessa’s experience with her grandmother. My father was also a negative person who, I believe, had many troubles in his past life too. In my experience, Grandmother Macleod and my father are very much alike in their controlling, in their
Set in a futuristic dystopia Chicago there is a society that is divided into five factions: Abnegation; selflessness, Amity; peaceful, Candor; honest, Dauntless; brave, and Erudite; knowledgeable. Each represents a different virtue of living one’s life. The children of this society have to decide whether they want to stay in their faction or switch to another, the choice is theirs. The young Beatrice “Tris” Prior makes a choice that surprises everyone including herself. After what seems to be the wrong choice, Tris and her fellow faction members have to go through a very competitive training in order to live with their new faction. They must go through intense psychological tests and extreme physical training that can either transform them or destroy them. If they fail to complete their training successfully they will be left frictionless and an outcast to society. While the Dauntless train, the Erudite devolve a life threatening plan that is carried out that night. They developed a serum that stops the brain’s thought process and all of the Dauntless become sleeper soldiers for they were injected with it. The serum does not work on Tris or Tobias “Four” Eaton because they are both Divergent. When they try to escape they are both caught and brought to Jeanine, the Erudite leader. She then sentences Tris to death and Tobias is sent to the control room to view the attack. Tris is locked inside a glass tank that fills with water, but moments later her mother saves her life. ...
Her test results were inconclusive which meant that she was different from the rest of the initiates that took the test at the same time. As a result, when it came time to choose a faction, Tris decided to choose the faction that was the least similar to her own. Even though she was still uncertain about her purpose, Tris decided to make a daunting change in her life when she picked Dauntless as her new faction. Furthermore, during the Dauntless initiation process, Tris does not mind change at all, she arrived into Dauntless as a weak initiate being in last place during the early stages of the initiation process. As the initiation progressed, Tris was extremely focused on becoming the top initiate that she and one of the Dauntless leaders, Tobias fall in love with each other.
The novel Divergent by Veronica Roth, has many dystopian elements. In divergent, the problems are created because of the elements of Dystopia. There are many elements that are present and are created through out it. The society is somewhat corrupted ande that makes it non-perfect.
