Verizon’s Minecraft Mod: Is It Worth the Hype? By now you've probably heard that Verizon has made a cool Minecraft mod. You've probably even headed to your computer and tinkered around with it. But what if you haven't given it a try? Is it worthy of your time and effort? The short answer: Yes, it's actually pretty cool and totally worth checking out. What Verizon did was to work with an advertising company called Wieden + Kennedy and a Minecraft design agency named Blockworks to create a functional cellphone in the Minecraft world. No, it's not a handheld phone that your avatar can put in his pocket; it's actually a huge cellphone that floats around in the atmosphere. And it's fully functional: YouTubers CaptainSparklez and SethBling (both …show more content…
of whom have become popular because of their Minecraft streams) gave the phone a try and were able to use its features. How they did it Verizon and its partners created a web application called Bloxel that translated video calls, webpages, and other data into blocks. This way, the information can be processed in Minecraft servers and displayed in the Minecraft world in real time. How to use the mod In their video demos, CaptainSparklez and SethBling first created a cellphone and a tower. Once the phone was connected to the tower and showed full signal strength bars, the YouTubers began to put the cellphone through its paces. CaptainSparklez, for example, called himself and later SethBling on his tablet, demonstrating that the caller would see a blocky video call while the person on the other end will see the caller's Minecraft avatar. He then browsed through a couple of web pages, showing that real webpages could be displayed in the phone. However, they're shown in true Minecraft fashion, so web images become highly pixelated while text appear in small blocks. SethBling also made video calls through Verizon's phone and browsed through his Twitter and personal blog.
He then demonstrated how Minecraft users can make a selfie stick and use it to take a selfie of their avatar. They can then send his picture to their friends through MMS. It wasn't shown in the demo videos, but Verizon says on GitHub that also send and receive text messages. Not sure how well that would go, though, given that letters are hard to read in the Minecraft world. What this means for gamers Verizon's in-game phone is a major plus for Minecraft fans who want to continue living their real life even when they're inside the game. As long as they've built the phone and the tower, they can make calls and talk with their friends while mining for materials and creating castles or other kinds of buildings. The cellphone mod is also great for those who construct amazing structures in Creative mode. Once they've finished their masterpiece, they can take a selfie beside it, send the picture to their friends, and show off their creation. The best part about Verizon's mod is that they've open-sourced their libraries. This means that Minecraft players who have coding skills can use them to do wonderful things, such as adding blocky videos in their Minecraft
screens.
...eople playing with their phones “I assuming is their phones or it might be Verizon’s phone”. This to me seems a psychological mind game. They show you a picture of a person or couple smiling. That in turn should make you think if they are happy they I can be happy with a Verizon too.
