A cultural artifact is something that does not come from nature, it is something that is invented or made and helps tell us about the way the world is. Cultural artifacts can be seen as a good and bad thing; depending on your generation or how you look at how the artifact being used. Cultural artifacts have changed the way the world is and the way the world works. For this paper, the cultural artifact the cell phone has changed the way we communicate and do business. Everything we need is just a few clicks away. Cellphones have changed physically and technologically throughout the decades. From the militarized phone bags that were used to give orders during war to the more modernized, smaller, multi-use cellphones where anything can be found …show more content…
This has mad the assumption about the way the world should be. This can be seen because communication is always accessible and that if someone needs to get ahold of someone, they will most likely answer, no matter the way of communication. I think that this is true because when I call a friend or my parents and they don’t answer, I get angry because I know they have a cellphone I don’t see why they can’t answer me. This can become an issue because many people are getting to the point with cellphones people need to answer right away. Many people are assuming that the world is a place where communication and answering should happen right now. Many can assume to that cell phones are making life really mobile as well everything from emails, surfing the web, texting, and calling. Another assumption about the way the world should be is that society is to the point where face to face interactions are now becoming a thing of the past. This can be seen due to many people struggle to hold conversations when communicating with friends, family, teachers, or co-workers due to the mass use of texting and calling in order to communicate with others. Using cellphones as an example to try to make sense of the world, we can show that our society is constantly on the move and that cellphones have made it to where they accommodate to our busy lives because business and communication can be done from anywhere at any
Culture, a significant aspect of an individual identity, tending to be defined from your birth, woven by the gods: however, I defy the hand of fate by picking my own cultural identity... For why should I be forced into the culture that was imposed upon me, just because of my heritage, religion, beliefs, and customs; instead of discovering my own and being myself. I am to tell you the culture I subjugate myself into; a sub-genre of gaming and anime culture, collectively called otaku, and help broaden your mind to the new phenomenon of a different type of pop culture.
In the essay “Our Cell Phones, Our Selves” written by Christine Rosen, the author presents a brief history on how cell phones were introduced into society and how this artifact changed people’s interactions in the physical space. Rosen describes the first cell phone that appeared in 1983 as “hardly elegant,” big and expensive (458). Cell phones at that time were mainly used by important and affluent people. However, seven years later, cell phones became smaller and affordable provoking a big change in society. This big technological advance did not only affect the United States, but the entire world.
Education is why people attend college, hundreds of thousands of students are thrown onto campuses across the world and get involved in various campus clubs; however, despite their vast amount of differences, these kids share one similarity, they all brought their video game console. On move-in day almost every dormitory has some kind of gaming console. It is a common denominator that students share, that they can bond over. The PlayStation 4 is of the latest generation of consoles and by some considered the premiere gaming console. The Sony PlayStation plays all the latest games in stunning quality, run apps seamlessly, and can play almost any media, it is the perfect media device for college.
Many of us can really be self-absorbed and self-centered, and I also believe that our cell phones as well as how we were raised have an impact on how people are acting now. Overall, technology has changed how many communicate. In many ways, technology has enabled us to act and connect with a multitude of people around the globe. I think people can do something about the usage of cellphones. For example, people can leave their phone behind at home when they go to work. They will see that they don’t really need their phone to survive. And as for the way we act, I think parents need to show their children how to act at a young age, so it doesn’t hurt them in the future. By implementing those small changes, people can grow to be more civilized and less
In the article entitled, “Our Cell Phones Ourselves”, Christine Rosen describes how cell phones have changed the way we communicate. Rosen tells the readers the main purpose for cell phone use in the past, versus present day. Her purpose is to make society aware of how cell phones have influenced our lives in order to inspire change as to how we view our cell phones. Rosen directs her writing to everyone in the present day by describing the negative results of cell phone use and how it impacts our lives and those around us. Without a doubt, cell phones are going to be a part of our world, but it is the responsibility of every cell phone owner to exercise self control and understand that a cell phone is nothing more than a device.
In today’s age there is so much controversy on whether or not cell phones are helping the world or destroying it. When cell phones first came out it was instantly the thing to have with no second guessing, you just had to have it. But these days many people are saying that it is disconnecting us from the real world. But even with everybody saying that, a study was done saying that over three-quarters of the cell phone owners asked said that cell phones made their lives easier overall or did not really have an affect at all. They said that it makes it easier to contact family or friends from long distances and are able to keep up with what is going on in people's lives they would never be able to normally talk to without them. In addition, it also helped people who would normally forget about events be able to set reminders and help them not only remember to be there but get there on
Many people in today’s society rely on technology to help us with our daily lives and help us stay connected to family, friends, and other people. The advancements in today’s cell phone technology is very complex and made to be efficient for their owners, allowing them to surf the net and IM message people instantly. Cellphones in particular have developed very fast in the past 15 years. From my childhood, cell phones have evolved from the old school Nokia bricks that allowed texts, calls, and simple graphic games, to todays I-Phones that have higher computable capabilities than some computers. In the United States alone, there is an estimated population of around 297 million people, and 197 million people are subscribed to cell phone companies (Starr). With so many people in today’s society with so much power and opportunity in the palm of their hands, we shouldn’t forget that “With great power comes great responsibility” –Voltaire.
Tim Rose and his wife Natalie Rose have experienced many assumptions and stereotypical comments solely based on their appearances. Natalie is able-bodied, and Tim was born with cerebral palsy (Verstraten, 2014). The Roses have created the “Rose Centre for Love, Sex, and Disability” which aims to promote disability in a positive light, and educate disabled and able-bodied people around the topics of love, sex, and relationships (Verstraten, 2014). The chosen cultural artifact addresses the conversation of a romantic relationship between an able-bodied and a disabled person, and touches on the stigmatization surrounding this relationship. The cultural artifact is a Toronto Star news article titled “Surprise! Disabled People Have
Good cultural artifact topic because sunglasses are an example of an item from our past that once and still can be used to describe ones gender identity. However, this just doesn’t apply to Ray-Ban. Reflecting on past TV shows and movies such as CHiPs, Magnum P.I., Smokey and the Bandit, and Top Gun in which the male characters exerted a sense of machismo by hiding behind sunglasses. Even dictators like Muammar Gaddafi used sunglasses to build his identity. In both cases we can see how gender rigidity may originate from an item as common as sunglasses. For some males, sunglasses were symbolic; they represented masculinity, power, authority and social status. Kids on the other may use sunglasses to solidify their gender type. Under cognitive
When identifying an artifact, archeologists have to rely heavily on preexisting knowledge, common senses, and each other. Exercise one displayed how the identity of an artifact and its cultural importance is not easily determined by its outward appearance. Even if the identification of the artifact is obvious, archeologists ask basic questions in order to understand the use and significances of an artifact. Often this question lead to more questions rather than answers, still the assignment showed how asking questions and gathering basic information could lead to the identification of different artifacts.
Be that as it may, the smartphone changes our culture and our life as a whole which causes an impact on the older generation and the younger generation. As smartphone improves our communication and interaction with our friends, our families and relatives, or other peoples around the world, the smartphone creates disconnection, and degrades the social interaction around themselves. Although there are advantages and disadvantages of the smartphone that impact our culture, the smartphone improves our communication with other people. It is possible that “many of our cultures values will continue to change as our society becomes more dependent on technology.” (Zackary, 2015) To conclude, the communication technology such as smartphone indeed affects our culture as a whole in many
Technology has, since the primitive years, always been used to invent tools in order to solve problems. This would, in turn, simplify and make man’s life easier. Through advancements in the field, man has become more efficient on both the macro- and microscopic level. Anything nowadays can be attained with either the flip of a switch or a click of a mouse. One particular technology that came about in this time was the smartphone. Since 2008, the smartphone, a device that combines a normal cell phone with a computer, typically offering Internet access, data storage, e-mail capability, etc. all in your hand was deemed as ground-breaking technology and created one of the largest and most competitive market in terms of technology to date. Their increased popularity continued to grow and today, it is very hard to encounter someone without a smartphone. These devices allow people to disconnect from reality and grant them access to the world as a whole. People use these devices to manage their daily routine, dictating what they should do and when they should do it. The capabilities of this device had been unheard of before their time. However, is there more to this technology than what has been made aware to their owners? We have become overly obsessed with these devices that it has impacted our humanity – our interaction with others and society. Since its upbringing, the invention of the smartphone has come to negatively reinvent the way people go about their daily lives because we have become detached from society, let these smartphones govern our lives, and have become obsessed with these devices.
