Vanilla Infused Couscous Pudding

Couscous replaces the rice in this dish, creating a slightly different taste and a unique texture in this family favorite. Catalase is a common enzyme that is produced in all living organisms. All living organisms are made up of cells and within the cells, enzymes function to increase the rate of chemical reactions. Enzymes function to create the same reactions using a lower amount of energy. The reactions of catalase play an important role to life, for example, it breaks down hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. Our group developed an experiment to test the rate of reaction of catalase in whole carrots and pinto beans with various concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. Almost all enzymes are proteins and proteins are made up of amino acids. The areas within an enzyme speed up the chemical reactions which are known as the active sites, and are also where the

Third, grab the left edge of the Kool-Aid packet between your thumb and index finger. With your other hand, begin peeling the upper-left corner until the entire top of the envelope is removed. Next, dump the contents of the envelope into the pitcher. Notice how the powder floats before settling on the bottom of the pitcher. Then, take the measuring cup and scoop two cups of sugar into the pitcher as well. At this point, adding the water is a crucial step. Place the pitcher under the water faucet and slowly turn on the cold water. If the water is turned on too quickly, powder will fly all over when the initial gusts of water hit. After the pitcher is filled within two inches of the top, turn the water off and get prepared to stir. With the wooden spoon submersed three-quarters of the way in the liquid, vigorously stir in a clockwise motion until all of the powder is dissolved.
“Strange Fruit” by Billie Holiday conveys the inhumane, gory lynchings of African-Americans in the American South, and how this highly unnatural act had entrenched itself into the society and culture of the South, almost as if it were an agricultural crop. Although the song did not originate from Holiday, her first performance of it in 1939 in New York City and successive recording of the song became highly popular for their emotional power (“Strange fruit,” 2017). The lyrics in the song highlight the contrast between the natural beauty and apparent sophistication of the agricultural South with the brutal violence of lynchings. Holiday communicates these rather disturbing lyrics through a peculiarly serene vocal delivery, accompanied by a hymn-like

They come from a vine-like orchid indigenous to parts of Central America. In order to provide the vanilla flavor, the pods must be harvested before they ripen and then aged. As a result of the time-consuming and labor-intensive process required to get them to market, vanilla beans are expensive. That said, most bakers would agree that the cost is worth it as vanilla beans provide the pure and undiluted flavor of vanilla. They do so as much as or better than vanilla powder. You can use them to make your own extract or simply add the seeds directly to a dessert. Using them requires you to split the beans and then scrape the seeds out with the edge of a knife. There is very little moisture, which is one of the main factors that make it an excellent substitute for vanilla

Once the berry mixture has boiled, pour the sugar and pectin mixture into the pot. Using the wooden spoon, immediately start to stir the jam and continue to stir until all the sugar is dissolved. This may take a few minutes. Once the sugar is all stirred in well, place the lid back on and let the jam re-boil, stirring occasionally. This should take about 10-15 minutes. Make sure to keep an eye on it as it will boil out of the pot if you are not paying attention.
