Vampire Squid
(Vampyroteuthis Infernalis)
Extreme Habitat/ Environment
The vampire squid lives in the midnight/deep zone. This means that they are found at ocean depths of around 1,500 to 3,000 metres. They occupy the deepest tropical oceans, with preferred temperatures of 2-6 degrees celsius. The temperature of water at those depths are so cold. They live in the part of the ocean where there is barely no light. Therefore there is no light intensity. It is extremely dark at those depths, and the surroundings are not visible. This invisibility requires organisms living there, to have some way/adaptation of navigating through the darkness. Bioluminescent light is emitted by organisms to help them see (such as the vampire squid), also they have …show more content…

This creates buoyancy and lightness which helps them save energy to swim. The tissues have equal densities as the surrounding deep water which decreases the need for active swimming, which saves energy. (Metabolism and oxygen intake another adaptation to come). The vampire squids use jet propulsion which can reach fast speeds. This lessens the energy requirement for the vampire squids. This adaptations helps with their survival due to the low oxygen rates in their habitat, therefore, by having a less active way of getting around they are energy economical. This makes it possible for the vampire squids to stay at a low oxygen zone, as oxygen is needed to carry out respiration, and do energy costly …show more content…

The eggs that are hatched are fewer in amount than other squids, and are also bigger. The female hangs around the area where the eggs were planted in for around 13 months. The female vampire squid dies right after giving birth to the eggs (due to the large usage of energy/worn out). The eggs are released in deeper depths of the ocean, this protects the eggs from harm as there won’t be many creatures living there. Therefore this adaptation of spawning the eggs in even deeper depths allow the eggs to survive, and carry on the species of the vampire squid (free of
