Speech for year 12 2018 (Run Lola Run and RULES OF SUMMER) by Dipesh Adhikari
Good morning all, I am here to examine the ways vivid and memorable images are used in RUN LOLA RUN and RULES OF SUMMER to explore particular experience. The vivid and memorable images known as distinctively visual images can be used to explore experiences or themes by the directors or the author within in the text or film. The use of distinctively visual images draws and engages audiences to the text or the film, allowing the story to unfold in the manner which the composers wish to present. This concept is clearly explored through the film “Run Lola Run” by Tom Tykwer and in the picture book “RULES OF SUMMER” by Shaun Tan. Both texts explore themes such as “Life

is a game” and “love can conquer all”. To present these concepts the composer and director use motifs such as colour red, cock and number 20, music and film techniques. Love can conquer all is one of the theme which is explored through the film “Run Lola Run” by Tom Tykwer.
Love is one of the most profound emotions known to human beings. We can seek the expression of love in various forms of relationship such as, romantic and family. The concept love can conquer all is clearly ported by Tykwer through the film Run Lola Run. Love conquers all is presented through the relationship of young couple Lola and Manni, who are living in Germany. Lola the Protagonist discovers herself needing 100 thousand marks in order to save her boyfriend Manni’s life, as the consequences of drug deal gone wrong. In the first run Lola helps Manni rob a store in order to save beloved boyfriend’s life. For instance, in the store when Manni sates “cover me I’ ii grab the cash.” Followed by the mid shot of Lolo coving Manni with the gun. Lola cover Manni despite not knowing how to use the gun. The use of mid shot shows that love can make you do anything. It allows responder to visually observe the faith and ramifications of love. The idea of love is also explored through the intimate bedroom scene between Lola and Manni. During the scene Tykwer has deliberately created the entire room with red filter. The deliberate use of red filter allows the Tykwer to capture the audiences to nature of colour red, which is privacy, love and …show more content…
passion. Similarly, in the picture book “RULES OF SUMMER” by Shaun Tan similar concept are explored.
The different forms of relationships and love are explored through the use of pictures and various techniques by Shaun Tan. For instance, the picture of a person helping other person to climb the wall from dark, which leads to other proportion which is bright and yellow. The wall is used as the physical and mental barriers to love and relationship of the two people with in the picture. In the proportion of the picture the wall covers the more than 2 3rd of the picture this present the idea of no matter how big or tough the barriers are if you love the person positively then barriers will not be able to disconnect each other. The other lest the 1 3rd of the picture is painted as yellow and bright which demonstrate the hope for their future and faith in their
relationship. Life is a game is another theme which is discovered through the film “Run Lola Run”. Game is form of competitive activity or sport gone according to rules. For instance, the use of animated sequences at starts of each run serves as the concept of life is a game. Also, Lola is able to keep redoing a significant situation until she gets the consequence she wants demonstrate the life is a game because only in a game it would be possible to redo situation until you get the outcome you want. The title of film “Run Lola Run” serves as life is game due to fact the running is often done in a game. Tykwer uses split screen of Lola running, Manni and the clock, through the clock is used as motifs to show significant of time just like in a game. This allows responder to know visualise how life is a game as it has certain time to complete specific activities similar to a game. Like wish in RULES OF SUMMER, Tan uses sunlit image, which shows a young boy racing past a boundless field chasing a rocket ship which has just taken off. Tan uses a long shot to convey the idea of life is a game to the responder. The long shot allows responder see the importance of time. The picture also interprets they concept of if you don’t follow the rules just like is a game you will fail to succeed. in the proportion to picture the endless field covers more 2 3rd of the picture, which presented as the distance and the barriers to reach the rocket ship. This present the responder the importance of following rules like is sport and we must follow the rules and time in order to thrive. In conclusion, it can be stated that both text convey theme such as “life is a game” and “relation and love can conquer all”. In orders to present this ideas both Tykwer and Tan uses distinctively visual Images and the techniques within the vivid and memorable images to grab and engage the audiences to the text and the film.
Lisa Parker’s “Snapping Beans”, Regina Barreca’s “Nighttime Fires”, John Frederick Nims’ “Love Poem”, and John Donne’s “Song” all demonstrate excellent use of imagery in their writing. All of the authors did a very good job at illustrating how the use of imagery helps the reader understand what the author’s message is. However, some of the poems use different poetic devices and different tones. In Lisa Parker’s “Snapping Beans” and Regina Barreca’s “Nighttime Fires”, both poems display a good use of personification. However in John Donne’s “Song” and John Frederick Nims’ “Love Poem, they differ in the fact that the tone used in each poem contrasts from each other.
Love, partnership and commitment have been the subjects of a multitude of novels, plays poems, movies and great works of art. Throughout these works, the image of love and commitment in love have taken many different forms. Today, we easily recognize symbols of commitment in love to be items such as hearts, wedding bands, roses, etc. However, in literature, especially, more abstract and creative symbols of commitment to a loved one are often present. Additionally, the symbols of devotion that exist in literature do not always involve romantic love as opposed to many movies, painting and sculptures. For example, in the short story, “Saving Sourdi” by May-Lee Chai, symbols of loyalty to a loved one manifest between two sisters. In opposition to symbols of loyalty existing in a platonic manner as it does in “Saving Sourdi,” Peter Meinke’s “The Cranes,” provides symbols of commitment in an amorous relationship.
...ught to life these ideas on a new level in Run Lola Run, which glorifies the camera's results with movement in every frame. Run Lola Run feeds the kino-eye with collision, contrast, and conflicting scenes, which make the film a huge success in giving the audience a new type of story with suspense, comedy and drama.
There are many kinds of love, relationships and companionship in the world. However, during some sensitive periods of time, some love is marked as forbidden love or guilty love. Some people had to give up their love, some people had to decide to hide their love forever, some people had to get rid of the result of the love to protect themselves under that background. Wayson Choy, the author of The Jade Peony, tries to use the conflicts in the novel to tell people what real love is. Therefore, in the novel, the three relationships are three kinds which are not easily accepted by people at that time. Love has nothing to do with nationality, love has nothing to do with age, love has nothing to do with gender.
Distinctively visual language and cinematic techniques highlight to the responder the particular literal and metaphorical experiences characters are faced with, within a text. Peter Goldsworthy’s novel Maestro, Don McLean’s song ‘Vincent’ and the intriguing film Australia by Baz Luhrrman, explore the ways in which the human experiences of an individual’s connection to landscape is fundamental in shaping one’s sense of identity, personal growth and development. Composers further explore the realisation that our lives can be enriched by an understanding and appreciation of art as well as a deeper understanding of the importance of love and lust. The depiction of characters is conveyed through distinctively visual images to highlight the subsequent development of courage and resilience leads responders to a deeper understanding of how human experiences can create a sense of individuality.
Therefore, the distinctive visual techniques employed by the composer provide a vehicle for the respondent to understand the ideas and themes prompted by people and their experiences. Tykwer’s film, Run Lola Run demonstrates the effect of the distinctive visual in Lola’s exploration of the themes of chance and time, whilst Mackellar’s poem ‘My Country’ provides the audience with an evocative experience of the Australian environment.
Love comes in so many shapes and forms. Nowlan presents a good view of love being
Love and affection is an indispensable part of human life. In different culture love may appear differently. In the poem “My god my lotus” lovers responded to each other differently than in the poem “Fishhawk”. Likewise, the presentation of female sexuality, gender disparity and presentation of love were shown inversely in these two poems. Some may argue that love in the past was not as same as love in present. However, we can still find some lovers who are staying with their partners just to maintain the relationship. We may also find some lovers having relationship only because of self-interest. However, a love relationship should always be out of self-interest and must be based on mutual interest. A love usually obtains its perfectness when it develops from both partners equally and with same affection.
This passage marks the first of several types of love, and gives us an intuitive
The article, “Measurement of Romantic Love” written by Zick Rubin, expresses the initial research aimed at presenting and validating the social-psychological construct of romantic love. The author assumed that love should be measured independently from liking. In this research, the romantic love was also conceptualized to three elements: affiliative and depend need, an orientation of exclusiveness and absorption, and finally a predisposition to help.
Love has the power to do anything. Love can heal and love can hurt. Love is something that is indescribable and difficult to understand. Love is a feeling that cannot be accurately expressed by a word. In the poem “The Rain” by Robert Creeley, the experience of love is painted and explored through a metaphor. The speaker in the poem compares love to rain and he explains how he wants love to be like rain. Love is a beautiful concept and through the abstract comparison to rain a person is assisted in developing a concrete understanding of what love is. True beauty is illuminated by true love and vice versa. In other words, the beauty of love and all that it entails is something true.
Love is a concept that has puzzled humanity for centuries. This attachment of one human being to another, not seen as intensely in other organisms, is something people just cannot wrap their heads around easily. So, in an effort to understand, people write their thoughts down. Stories of love, theories of love, memories of love; they all help us come closer to better knowing this emotional bond. One writer in particular, Sei Shōnagon, explains two types of lovers in her essay "A Lover’s Departure": the good and the bad.
Love is the first symbol discussed. Lola and Manni's love is unconditional and unbreakable. They will go to such risk measures for each other. The introduction of love takes place in the beginning scene of the film where Lola is on the phone with Manni. He wants her to come somehow come up with 100,000 marks within twenty minutes. With it being challenging, Manni asks Lola why she said, “love can do anything”. He doesn’t think love is strong enough to save him. Even
The film analyzes a romantic relationship that is expected to last for a day. However, the nature of emotional attachment created by the relationship proves otherwise. Interpersonal communication is an essential aspect of romance because it enhances understanding, conflict resolution, and decision making. I selected the romantic interpersonal relationship because it is an essential aspect of life as far as marriage is concerned. Marriage is sustained through constant communication to help reduce the differences and enhance the effort of the couples in developing their marriage (Burleson
The use of multiple images to propel a narrative allows the audience to learn something through the characters that are there. Bloomer (1990)’s study on visual perception also draws upon Newton (1998)’s concern, as he explores the multiple perspectives and views of the event. By using a series of images, the characters mood and tone can be established throughout different elements of what we see. This may be the people, the place itself or the items within the place. By having a narrative of photographs, the audience has an even deeper understanding of the reality of that moment or event as they see more than just the ‘big picture’ as
