Shakespeare's use of antagonists in Hamlet emphasizes the contradictories in Hamlet’s personality and reveals Hamlet’s nature of being indecisiveness. Claudius and Polonius are considered as antagonists in this play. Meanwhile, they reflect Hamlet’s complex personality.
In Hamlet, Claudius is described as the antagonist, who murders the old Hamlet and marries Gertrude. Claudius stand on the opposite side of Hamlet, and he views Hamlet as his biggest threat to his crown. At the beginning of the play, Claudius kills the old Hamlet by using poison, and he announces old Hamlet’s death as a natural death. This implies his opposite position regarding to Hamlet, as the murderer of Hamlet’s father. Claudius is married with Gertrude, which is not acceptable
