In both short stories, Up in the Slide by Jack London, and A Glow in the Dark by Gary Paulsen. The main characters in both stories have held up all the courage and strength to overcome their fears. The dogs also encourage them to face their fears and give them that feeling of comfort. The main character Gary Paulsen of the short story, A Glow in the Dark by Gary Paulsen has a fear of ghost. So while he was in a husky race, his lantern or flashlight broke which forced him and his dogs to be left in the dark. Gary is left scared and afraid in the dark and uses his dogs as protection. Gary had a fear of ghosts so this shocks him a lot and gets very frightened. Since he could not see anything he hit his head, could not see, and got wet from puddles, but even worse the dogs stopped and they weren't even a bit tired! When he opened his eyes the first glance he had was that there was a bright stream of light. At this point he was trembling and knew it was a ghost who was going to attack him. In the short story it states, ¨My legs moved without my side the team in the dark, holding to each dog like a security blanket until I reached the next one, moving closer to the light until I was at the front and there were no more dogs to hold,¨(pg.323, Paulsen) This quote further shows how the dogs are giving Gary the comfort and confidence to overcome the light which he believes is a ghost. He trust that the dogs will be on his back and protect him. With this confidence he decides to face his fear of the ghost light. The main character Clay Dilham in the story, Up the Slide by Jack London has a very serious fear of death. Those people in their lives are the only things that give them strength and comfort to face that
In “Marching through a Novel,” John Updike, conveys a complex relationship between the novelist and characters, by representing the author as a god-like figure whose characters are like his soldiers ready to take action upon his command. John Updike successfully portrays this characterization through his use of metaphors, diction, and imagery.
Many find reverence and respect for something through death. For some, respect is found for something once feared. In a passage from The Crossing by Cormac McCarthy, a man cares for a wolf that has died. The prominent religious motif and the paradox contrasting beauty and terror create a sense of awe that is felt by the narrator as he cares for the wolf.
It seems that regardless of the troubles they’re going through in their lives, all is forgotten at the
In “To Build A Fire”, the main conflict throughout is man versus nature although it would be inaccurate to say that nature goes out of its way to assault the man. The fact of the matter is, nature would be just as cold without the man's presence regardless of him being there .The environment as a whole is completely indifferent to the man, as it frequently is in naturalist literature. The bitter environment does not aid him in any way, and it will not notice if he perishes. In the same way, the dog does not care about the man, only about itself. Ironically enough though, as the man was dying he was getting upset toward the dog because of its natural warmth, the instincts that it had, and its survival skills and those were the elements that the man lacked for survival. It is ironic that the man had to die in order to find out that man's fragile body cannot survive in nature's harsh elements, regardless of a human’s natural over-confidence and psychological strength.
The voice of Terry Kay relays to his readers a story of life through death in this short novel, To Dance With the White Dog. This novelist writes the story of an elderly man, recently widowed and dealing with everyday occurrences while also battling the inevitable effects of old age. Sam Peek, the elderly main character, tends to get fed up with his overprotective family. During this, Peek begins seeing a white dog that no one else seems to be able to see. Although Peek's family thinks he's losing his mind, in the end the dog turns out to be very real and even seems to everyone as if it were sent there just to take care of the old man.

Dog’s Death instantly captured my attention because of the tone that was set with the opening line. “She must have been kicked unseen or brushed by a car” (Updike, 1953). The line ultimately lets the reader know that the poem is about to be sad, and you are going to feel one or more emotions before you are done with the poem. “Notice how particular details in Frost's and Updike's poems about dogs are used to evoke initial feelings—feelings that set the stage for thinking that eventually touches profoundly on matters beyond the welfare of animals” (Clugston, 2010). Along with the tone, Updike draws on your imagination to bring the images to the forefront. For example, “To use the newspapers spread on the kitchen floor and to win, wetting there, the words, "Good dog! Good dog!" (Updike, 1953).
