Good teaching is about humor at any level. It’s about being self-deprecating and not taking yourself too seriously. It’s about making innocuous jokes, so that the ice breaks and resident’s learn in a relaxed atmosphere where you, like them, are human with your own share of faults and shortcomings. 7. Exemplary teaching is about caring, nurturing, and developing the minds and talents. It’s about devoting time, often invisible to every resident. It’s about thankless hours designing and preparing materials to further enhance learning. 8. A good educational program is supported by strong and visionary leadership, with very tangible institutional support, resources, personnel and funds. As important, a quality education center is continually reinforced by an overarching vision that transcends the entire institution. From attending faculty, to resident teachers, and guest lecturers which is reflected in not only what is said, but more importantly by what is done. 9. A good teaching environment is about mentoring between senior and junior residents, teamwork, and being recognized and promoted by one’s peers. Motivating and creating positive feelings’ regarding the subject matter being presented makes the learner feel good and empowered by the knowledge they are gaining, and should be a goal of all medical educators. Teachers of medical resident’s, intern’s, and medical students must realize that flexibility is important to a proper learning atmosphere and that encouraging critical thinking, creativity, and expected comments is part of the learning and teaching process. I am excited to be submitting my application to Georgetown University School of Medicine, as this school’s mission and values reflect my own beliefs on the role of a physician. The road to gaining admission to medical school and becoming a physician is long, difficult, and intensely competitive. Once admitted, however, medical students spend the first two years primarily in laboratories and classrooms learning basic medical sciences. They also learn how to take medical histories, perform complete physical examinations, and recognize symptoms of diseases. During their third and fourth years, the medical students work under supervision at teaching hospitals and clinics. Following medical school, new physicians must complete a year of internship that emphasizes either general medical practice or one specific specialty and provides clinical experience in various hospital services. Physicians then continue in residency training, which lasts an additional three to six years, depending on the specialty. Immediately after residency, they are eligible to take an examination to earn board certification in their chosen specialty. Most traditional specialties include the following: anesthesiologist, cardiologist, dermatologist, family practitioner, gastroenterologist, internist, neurologist, oncologist, pathologist, psychiatrist, pulmonologist, and urologist
“We look for medicine to be an orderly field of knowledge and procedure. But it is not. It is an imperfect science, an enterprise of constantly changing knowledge, uncertain information, fallible individuals, and at the same time lives on the line.” There is more to being a great physician than having intellect, clinical experience, and competence in the medical field. A doctor must be daring and genuinely driven to positively impact a patient’s life. A doctor needs stand tall, even in the face of uncertainty.
The rest of the doctors are in medical specialties which include obstetrics, gynecology, general surgery, and psychiatry. In the 1980’s managed care has arisen and policymakers became worried the United States was not training a sufficient amount of primary care doctors. Success was in the hands of these physicians. The physicians were told to act as the gatekeepers to keep to more costly specialized medicine. In 1986 Congress made the Council on Graduate Medical Education.

I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. He explained that a career in the medical field was about responsibility, the responsibility to work with all members of the healthcare team for the well-being of the patient as well as their family
This experience will definitely influence my future practice; my action plan would be using those teaching strategies in preparing students to face the clinical environment, to ensure optimal patients’ health outcomes and it helps to build a competent and independent clinician.

Research shows that the learning environment encompasses more than just the classroom that learning and teaching takes place. Many factors contribute to a learning environment, including the students, teachers, parents, school staff, policy makers, specialists, support staff, community members and the different learning spaces and resources available. INTRODUCTION Clinical teaching is the act that provides the learners with the opportunity to transform classroom theories into the practical application of their profession (REF). The role of clinical teachers includes guiding the students for a rigorous response to professional practices by bridging the gap of theoretical application, to guarantee safe demonstration of their skills gained during the instruction time to their workplaces (REF). This aims at producing personnel that is qualified to handle patient problems after the period of training and assessment. Therefore, all levels of medical students are aimed to be equipped with the professional skills, knowledge and the attitudes for the quality provision of services to their patients.
I have had many excellent teachers throughout my educational experience, some of these have been wonderful teachers that have set lessons to life. Others have been boring, overly strict, unapproachable, and at times unknowledgeable. I have learned valuable lessons from both. A positive and fun learning environment makes students want to be in the classroom. The first step in learning is that the children must want to be there.
For teachers to be effective their classrooms should be open, encouraging and safe environments, where a strong student-teacher relationship can be achieved (Marsh, 2008). Students should be treated with respect in order to meet their need for belonging (Eggen&Kauchak, 2010). The layout of the room and resources need to be well considered allowing different areas for different activities (Bennett &Smilanich, P. 1994) keeping in mind space for easy movement and creative work.
