The need for things right now is the way of today’s society. With the Digital Age present, few people have the patience to wait. Gratification delayed is viewed by many as an inconvenience. This has contributed to the $5.68B loss for the United States Postal Service (USPS). (Katz, 2016) The use of first class mail has declined.
Instead of using first class mail, or as some call it, “snail mail”, more are opting to use digital methods to communicate. One study suggests that the average age of a child getting their first cell phone is 10.3 years of age. The cell phones are not being used for talking only, but for other things such as playing games and texting.
Going paperless was initially viewed to protect the environment by preserving trees. The amount of letters commissioned in America has been steadily decreasing on a daily basis. The majority of citizens are now sending their letters via e-mail or other methods of technology. Postal service companies such as USPS are struggling to keep business thriving. To compete with the technological advances in modern America, USPS should restructure their postal systems by terminating unessential delivery days and strategically limiting postal branches in order to conserve government money.
The U.S. Postal Service is one of the largest organizations in the world. In fiscal 2005, it had nearly 705,000 career employees and handled about 211 million pieces of mail through an extremely complicated system of carefully coordinated activities (United States Postal Service Annual report, 2005).

Whether it was a birthday card, a letter from a friend, or even a bill, we have all held a piece of paper that was sent from somewhere else.
