Many variables link the location a person lives to the influence it has on their overall health, stress levels, exposure to environmental hazards, diet, and lifestyle just to name a few. In the twenty-first century, most people follow societal norms, whether they are good or bad for them because people rarely make individual changes unless it becomes a mainstream idea or movement. Health values, although is one of the most talked about movements today. Information is available to direct people to a healthier, longer life. This information has not always been easily accessible, but is now a focus for health care. An interesting factor though is the amount of people willing to risk their health to continue their unhealthy lifestyles. …show more content…
The abundance of food and quality of food differs depending on a person’s financial capability. Between the countries, their weekly spending is extremely different, but so is the food they purchase. Families from developed countries like Germany, the United States, and Italy have access to more options, but also deal with inflation, but the fact that some of these countries do not have organizations like the FDA to approve or disapprove their food allows it to cost less at a risk. The food differences between these families are very vast, and the more they spent the unhealthier the food was. The families from Germany and the United States had an excess of fast food, junk food, and soda, and they spent the most on groceries. It was very interesting to watch the amount of unnecessary food drop as the amount spent on food dropped like the families from Chad, Bhutan, and Ecuador. The families with lower grocery bills appear to eat healthier, because they purchased natural grains and rice, but also more vegetables and fruits; some of these families did not purchase any meat that I noticed. Very interesting was the fact about the amount of money spent to the connection of how many people the food nourishes. The first three …show more content…
The study evaluated cardiovascular disease rates for middle-aged men from Japan, Hawaii, and California in order to eliminate age, genetics, and gender variables. The researchers selected these men because the United States had the highest amount of heart disease and Japan the lowest, this group would eliminate most variables so the focus would be on lifestyle and environmental effects. The results reflected heart disease existed more in the Japanese-American men than the men from Japan, and more men died from the disease that lived in California, but interestingly more men from Japan suffer strokes. The rate of the disease slowly affected the men from Japan, but the men from California displayed higher risks, and a more drastic increase of the disease during the years evaluated; the disconnection from the mainland helped Hawaii to deliver healthier results than California, but worse than Japan. Men living in California weigh the most, and due to the statistics of height not varying that means the Californian men are the most overweight, and being overweight is the number one cause of having cardiovascular disease. The Japanese-American men also had higher blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, all of which increase the risk of getting the disease. Differences between their diets account for the
Social determinants of health (SDOH) are increasingly becoming a major problem of Public Health around the World. The impact of resources and material deprivation among people and populations has resulted in an increase in mortality rate on a planetary scale. Social determinants of health are defined as the personal, social, economic and the environmental conditions which determines the health status of an individual or population (Gardner, 2013). Today’s society is characterized by inequalities in health, education, income and many other factors which as a result is becoming a burden for Public Health around the world. Research studies have shown that the conditions in which people live and work strongly influenced their health. Individuals with high levels of education and fall within the high income bracket turn to have stable jobs, live in the best neighborhood and have access to quality health care system than individuals who have low education and fall with the low income bracket. This paper is to explain different social determinants of health and how they play ...
Although the two authors do not refer to each other directly in their works, both their perspectives share a common ground that no enough income make people eating less healthy. Pinsker argues that the actual barrier that stops people from eating healthy is the lack of income (129-130). He uses studies to show that poor families choose processed food because children like those tasty processed food (Pinsker 129-134). Whereas poor families cannot afford the waste if children refused to eat healthier but less tasty food parents provided (Pinsker 129-134). Cortright also suggests that income matters the most to why people do not eat healthy. He even further discusses income as the most influential limiting factor by addressing that other factors such as physical proximity to local food sources do not cause people to eat less healthy (Cortright 135-138). The two authors, in general, reach a consensus and mutually prove that income plays as the biggest limiting factor for people to have healthy
Last week was a good demonstration of how a culture can significantly influence its nation’s health outcome. The Japanese, by being Japanese, have enhanced their mortality rate making them the best nation in the world for health outcomes. (Bezruchka, 2011) Not all cultures are so egalitarian however and require more programs or impetus to effect change in their health status. As we look at Europe, two countries which stood out to me were Sweden, a relatively wealthy country, and Slovenia; much poorer and agrarian relative to other European nations.
Social Determinants of health is the “conditions in which people are born, live, work and age that affect their health” Healthypeople.gov. (2017). Social Determinants of Health | Healthy People 2020. [online] Available at: https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/topics-objectives/topic/social-determinants-of-health [Accessed 22 Sep. 2017]. The determinants of health are important because it helps create policies to make changes, as well as improving public health conditions by addressing the different health outcomes an individual can face and improving the need for healthier conditions. Healthy People 2020 organizes the determinants of health in both a social and physical determinant which has an impact on health.
There are many social determinants that are present in our society, yet many of these determinants are not discussed. This is due to the fact that categorizing and discussing social groups and determinants is often seen as controversial. Although this may be true, comprehending and discussing these determinants are essential, as many of these determinants affect our health. These determinants affect our health simply by altering our own actions as well as the environment around us. Thus, comprehension of social determinants, the environment, and its ultimate connection with an individual’s lifestyle is essential in assessing many of the public health issues prevalent
Build Healthy Public Policy Nurses play a key role, not just in promotion of healthy public policies, but also in their creation. Healthy public policies focus on the collaboration of many organisations to provide policies that are safe and equitable, allowing all people the opportunity to lead healthy lives (WHO, 1986). McMurray and Clendon (2015) state that all those in health sectors should aim to ensure public policies contain knowledge of the impacts of health. The practical experience and relationships nurses create with clients allows them insights into areas that could be improved to provide quality health care. This information allows them to be advocates for healthy public policies that allow for the betterment of safe, equitable and relevant nursing practice (McMurray & Clendon, 2015; Webber, 2011).
A lack of money affects access to food in many ways. First, as these areas are remote, it’s difficult to deliver food with a short shelf life such as fresh produce, meat, or dairy products before their expiration date (W.K. Kellogg Foundation, 2004). With delivery to remote areas taking longer, the shelf life for products is even shorter, which causes buyers to purchase these products more often to make up for the loss (W.K. Kellogg Foundation, 2004). Poverty can also lead to people making unhealthy food choices, since it is the cheaper choice in the short run (Templeton, 2017). Moreover, it is likely that there is not a reliable mode of transportation to go to a grocery store in the impoverished and rural area (White, 2015). In addition, lack of education also negatively influences food choices; it is difficult for residents to make healthy food choices if they do not know the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods (Templeton,
If you 're looking to lose weight, it 's important to go on a diet. Nowadays, the word 'diet ' is being replaced with lifestyle change. However, at the core of it all, it 's most important to change the foods you 're consuming. It 's commonly known that lots of colorful fruits and vegetables are important to include in a healthy meal plan. Consuming lots of water is also very important too. Unless you 're a vegan, you 'll probably want to eat a lot more than just fruits and vegetables. In this case, it 's important to look at some of the other food groups and determine which ones are ideal for your best and healthiest diet.
It’s easy to assume that poor countries usually have the most unhealthy diets. Well, that’s a misdirected assumption. High blood pressure, high blood glucose, overweight and obesity, and high cholesterol are one of the 4 of the top ten risk factors that cause death. High blood pressure is the number one cause of death around the world and heart disease is the number one cause of death globally. All of them are caused by unhealthy eating. People tend to eat less fruits and vegetables which increase the risk of diseases and health problems, causing 1.7 million deaths a year.("Global Dietary Changes Threaten Health") America, one of the richer countries, has the worst eating diets. Nearly 2 out of 5 people in America are suffering from obesity.(Richardson) In a year, each person eats approximately 1.996 pounds. That’s a lot of food.
Heathy People 2020 emphasized that social determinants play an important role in the health of an individual. Examples of social determinants include availability of resources to meet daily needs, transportation options, access to mass media and emerging technologies, or exposure to physical hazards and toxic substances. For example, unsanitary housing is associated with exposures to mold, moistures, dust mites, or even lead. Places that are absent of sidewalks, bike paths, or recreational areas can discourage physical activity for some communities. As a result, these conditions in different settings can affect a person’s quality of life. Poor health outcomes are often corresponding to the interaction between people and their physical or social environments. For that reason, policies and interventions are implemented to ensure a healthier
The health of an individual and their communities is affected by several elements which combine together. Whether an individual is healthy or not, is determined by their circumstances and environment.1 To a greater extent, factors such as where an individual lives, their relationships with family and friends, the state of their environment, income, genetics and level of education all have significant impacts on health, however the more frequently considered factors such as access and use of health care facilities regularly have less of an impact.6 Determinants of health is a term which was introduced in the 1970s as part of a broader analysis of research and policy on public health. Researchers argued that there was a lot of attention and too much expenditure on health being dedicated to individuals and their illnesses, and little or no investment in populations and their health. It was decided that public health should be more concerned with social policies and social determinants than with health facilities and the outcomes of diseases.7 The determinants of health include social and economic environment, physical environment and an individual’s behaviour and characteristics. The environment of an individual determines their health, holding responsible an individual for having poor health or acknowledging them for good health is inappropriate. Individuals are not likely to be able to control several of the determinants of health. These determinants that make individuals healthy or not include the factors above, and numerous others.6
Living a healthy life style is the best way to leading a happier life. Dieting and working out promote good physical and mental health. Suffering from minor depression at one point, leading a healthier lifestyle was a coping mechanism for me. Seeing changes in my physical appearance enhanced my confidence. Making the decision of starting a new life style taught me discipline and good habits. Every bad, sad or frustrated emotion I felt was let out in the gym. This became an escape, a distraction from everything I was dealing with at that time, it became my happy place.

Not to mention have lower health risks, higher self-esteem and it will give them the energy they need to keep up with their eating habits and maintain their body weight.
