Over the years teenagers have been getting fatter and every year the number of individuals who are obese increases. In America, today's youth is known for having the worst eating habits in history. Teenagers are eating large amounts of obesogenic foods and craving Hot Cheetos for breakfast. Over the decades the eating habits of individuals have dramatically changed. Since 1980 obesity among adolescents has increased dramatically. Obesity is more common in adolescents now than it ever has been and the current generation may not outlive their parents. It is clear that something has to be done and quick before all of America is obese. It is not just the problem of one group or individual to fix. Therefore, understanding the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle can help encourage healthier choices. There are a number of diseases that can result from living an unhealthy lifestyle such as type two diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers. Type 2 diabetes is defined as a chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar. Cardiovascular disease which includes heart attacks, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, damages blood vessels, places high levels of stress on the heart and ultimately may lead to a stroke. Due to living an unhealthy lifestyle an individual also increases the chance of being diagnosed with prostate, esophagus, kidney or pancreatic cancer. It is clear that there is a connection between lifestyle choices and chronic disease. According to the article “Chronic Diseases As a Result of Poor Lifestyle Choices” the author, Pan Koenig states that “A diet of fast food, highly processed or salty foods and large amounts of starchy carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, cereal, baked goods, sweets, sugary drinks, alcohol excess, overeating and lack of exercise are the primary causes of obesity”(5). It is clear that eating unhealthy foods will give an individual harmful diseases. Local governments around the country like San Francisco, Seattle, and Berkeley have started to make or propose laws that tax sugar-sweetened drinks, they have set a precedent but more needs to be done. In the article “The New War Against Obesity” the author states that while coming up with a long term fix for the problem will take a lot more than just taxation, an in depth look at early experiments show promising results. Taxation on sugary beverages is where the government has the most solid evidence of an effect. The main goal of the government is to reduce consumption, especially in lower income families who are more likely to have untreated diseases related to excessive consumption of unhealthy foods. Another thing the government can do to push America towards a better future is to reduce the prices of healthier foods. Healthier foods are known for being more expensive and unhealthy foods are always a lot cheaper. Obesity has become an epidemic in adults and children in the United States. Moreover, children are at risk of obesity because they do not eat enough fruits and vegetables and do not obtain enough physical activity. Also, children have a higher chance of developing health diseases related to obesity such as hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease, diabetes and pulmonary disease. In addition, obesity in children from ages one to seventeen is an issue in Texas, since children are not aware of the serious consequences of being obese. Therefore, Texas should find ways to prevent obesity by authorizing healthier school lunches and allowing a school program to help obese children lose weight. Also, television advertisements are influencing obese children to make unhealthy choices.
The best way to begin a revolution in health in America is to start with the youth. The United States has the largest percentile of overweight children in the world. Approximately one-quarter of all four to five year olds and one-third of ten to eleven year olds are considered overweight. The obese children will more than likely become overweight parents. A child with an obese parent is ten percent more likely to raise obese children and thus the cycle continues (McBride, 2010). The more years that go on the higher the obesity rate climbs because the children are eating more and more and becoming less and less active.
In order to impede the epidemic of childhood obesity, the actual causes of the problem need to be evaluated and dissected. Obesity in children is becoming a huge problem in American society. In the past three decades, the rate of overweight children has increased by 300%. This is an alarming rate that is only climbing higher. Every member in society should take steps to becoming healthier. This would help the present generations as well as future generations to come. The lifestyle of Americans keeps us too busy to be a healthy society.
The obesity epidemic is one of the most pressing issues at this point in both American society and U.S. public policy initiatives. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention 35.9% of U.S. adults over the age of twenty are obese (CDC, 2013). The CDC further notes that 69.2% of U.S. adults twenty years of age and over are overweight (this percentage includes those who are obese). The obesity problem is not exclusive to the adults in the U.S. The CDC notes that 18.4% of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19 are currently obese (CDC, 2013). These statistics illustrate the severity of the obesity epidemic in this country, but what can be done to address or even correct this problem? Many people have proposed solutions, but few are as radical as the proposal from Michael Bloomberg (the New York City Mayor) in 2012.
The human body requires the intake of food in order to function properly. The foods that we decide to eat has an effect on the ability to use are mind, are strength, and even how prone we are to getting sick or hurt. Eating to much of the wrong foods, with little or no exercise can cause the silent but deadly epidemic of obesity in children and in teens. In the past, obesity was just known as a condition that only affected adults. In this generation the youths are becoming more prone to obesity. In 1995 an average of 18 million children all around the world was categorized as being overweight (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). In a Childhood Obesity Interventions article it says that 17% (12.5 million) of children in the United States is considered to be obese (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). This outrageous number of overweight children in the world is almost tripled in 2010, where 43 million children under 5 are considered to be overweight (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). Another staggering statistic is more than 60% percent of the children that are classified as overweight before they reach puberty, will be overweight as they become adults (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). This leads us to the most stifling fact of there being 2.8 million people in the world that die from being overweight or obese each year (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). These shocking statistics show how dangerous obesity really is, and should urge everyone to fight against this epidemic.
Everyday Americans die from the diseases they carry from obesity. Many Americans over eat because their social problems or because they are hereditary. Many plans have been discussed but finding the solution is the problem. Junk foods and unhealthy beverages have corrupted children’s minds all over the nation and putting a stop on it could lead to other benefits. Unhealthy foods and drinks should be taxed and healthy foods should be advertised more to help prevent American obesity.
The government must have a say in our diets. Because the issues of obesity have already reached national scales, because the costs of obesity and related health issues have gone far beyond reasonable limits, and because fighting nutritional issues is impossible without fighting poverty and other social issues, the government should control the range and the amount of available foods. The cost of healthier foods should decrease. The access to harmful foods should be limited. In this way, the government will be able to initiate a major shift in nutritional behaviors and attitudes in society.
The United States needs to do something to change the amount of childhood obesity in the nation. If the government requires children to take classes that require physical activity, abolishes school vending machines, and teaches children about healthy eating, then the amount of children that are obese in the United States will decrease significantly. Obesity is defined as the increase of body fat over time to the point where it can impact health in a negative manner and decrease life expectancy. Since the 1980’s, obesity has increased dramatically in the United States. Children have been greatly impacted in the increase of obesity. This is a major problem as someday these obese children could possibly turn into obese adults. If the population of obese adults and children keeps increasing, than not only will our country have a lot of severely unhealthy people but the cost of health care will increase dramatically.

Being able to detect obesity is easy but being able to get rid of it can be hard, and it is hard for a lot of people. Healthy eating is what we all need to consider in our everyday life. Healthy eating good prevent you from getting cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. There are many choices that we can make that can either benefit us or be hazardous to our health. There are many factors out there that can cause harm to the body. I have chosen three to discuss. What I am going to be talking about throughout my paper will be cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. I will be discussing what foods that would benefit and lessen your chance in getting these diseases. Also we will talk about the foods and other unhealthy choices that can increase your risk of getting these diseases. Eating healthy is what we need to teach our children and enforce it in your home. If we teach our children to start eating healthy at an early age then it could save them from having to struggle with getting these risk factors such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. We as parents need to instill good healthy eating habits for our children and make sure that our children are getting exercise of some sort on a daily basis. Adding exercise to your life will also lower your chances of becoming obese and having to worry about getting these risk factors.

All of these changes stated need to be made to decrease the obesity epidemic from affecting young individuals now and in the future. One of the major consequences of industrialization and modernization in society are lifestyle diseases. Lifestyle diseases are modern sicknesses that are caused or accelerated by the way we live our daily lives. This includes what we eat and the activities we do each day. Over time, wrong decisions will take a negative toll on our bodies. Lifestyle diseases differ from other diseases because it is caused by the way we behave and live our lives and there are simple preventions. Unlike a cold, lifestyle diseases such as diabetes cannot be “cured” with a dose of cold medicine or by waiting it off, lifestyle diseases are chronic and must be treated properly. This proves that there are consequences to our daily decisions and actions.
Obesity in adults has recently become a big issue. With more and more adults becoming obese every day it’s pretty obvious why it’s become such a big deal. People everywhere are now exercising more to get fit, but most the time they forget to improve their nutrition. The obesity rate in adults isn’t the only thing to rise greatly. Teenagers and kids are now facing the same problems with obesity as adults are. The main problems that cause obesity are poor nutrition and a lack of exercise. Many people now are focus on exercising and forgetting how big of a role nutrition plays in weight. Obesity hasn’t been too much of a problem in generations before, but now it’s become a really big issue. I believe bad habits that start at a young age are harder to break when we’re older, which is why I want to focus on teenagers and their poor eating habits. I think the poor eating habits of teenagers transfer into adult hood where they become obese because they are no longer growing but still eating whatever they want. I want to know why the nutrition of teenagers now is so poor compared to the generations before us. Being a teenager myself, I can write about the bad eating habits I personally have, in an attempt to fix them by becoming better informed. I hope to completely break my bad habits by totally changing what I eat and my perspective on food.
