Conclusion :
In summary, to conclude this report by recommending that site visit is very useful and essential in college for the students of civil engineering, to make the student realize and understand the major very well and think about different parts and procedures of the construction by knowing the materials and its part in construction. In addition I would like to advice the students to take every opportunity during studies of structural materials is to visit sites during free time to explore more about the details and to understand it perfectly. I would like to mention to the college to keep on giving the students chances to visit more sites during the years of major in that case the encouragement will grow in the minds of students of civil engineering.
The first of eighteen student built structures is an enormous stone arch that marks the entrance. Here there is a map showing all of the projects and their locations. Past the arch is a rock wall where the faces of the creators are engraved in the stone. This wall marks a path leading to Techtite Bridge which was another student project.
I have conducted my research through interview with someone familiar with construction and development as how geometry is used in these fields.
The construction industry plays an important role in competitiveness and prosperity of the economy in terms of its significantly contributing to shelter, infrastructure and employment (Anaman and Osei-Amponsah, 2007). A number of researchers have investigated on the vital role of the construction sector to the overall economic growth. In Rhodes’ paper who stated the construction industry in the UK contributed £83.0 billion in economic output in 2012, which accounts for 6% of the total. Also, workforce jobs in the construction industry in UK were 2.03 million in 2012 and 2.12 million in 2013, account 6.4% and 6.5% in total respectively (C. Rhodes, 2013). Oladinrin indicated the significance of construction linkage with the aggregate economy in Nigeria by studying on construction output and Gross Domestic Project (Oladinrin and etc., 2012). A recent report of U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis showed that the GDP value added of construction industry was $652,723 million in 2014, 3.7% of total GDP (http://www.bea.gov/industry/gdpbyind_data.htm). Besides, a report of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics stated the employment by construction industry sector take 4.7%, 3.9% and 4.5% in the year of 2002, 2012 and 2022 respectively (http://www.bls.gov/emp/ep_table_201.htm). The construction industry has been playing an influential role on domestic GDP in China (Zhou and Liu, 2007). A report of National Bureau of Statistics of China
Throughout the construction industry, technology plays a role to help ease the completion of a project to all of the parties involved. The amount of technology application in the industry supports the belief that technology has a positive impact on project productivity. One of the main materials used in the construction industry that surrounds us every day, in which we overlook, is concrete. Concrete is an art form, in which it takes time and talent in order for it to be used efficiently, to produce its high strength and longevity. However, the downfall of this material is that it is extremely costly and nearly impossible to form it to an aesthetically pleasing surface. In spite of this, what if I told you that there is hope? That the dream of a material made of concrete, producing the same qualities, can be formed to any shape, and used anywhere was a reality.
In building construction and in fire prevention there are organizations that have created a useful system on how to determine what type of building falls under which category. The ICC (International Code Council) and the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) create these building codes for the safety of firefighters. The two most commonly known standards for building classifications are the NFPA 5000 and also the International Building Code (IBC). The two are very similar, however, they different on sub-categorizing. The International Building Code uses Roman numerals behind the type of construction. In addition to subcategories with letters for each five classes and the amount of fire resistance provided for each building. NFPA uses Roman numerals behind the type of construction. Unlike the IBC, NFPA uses a 3-digit number system behind that to sub categorize the fire hourly rating for the load-bearing walls, for the beams and columns, and for the floor construction. The IBC and NFPA breaks down construction in to five classes, Type I, Type II, Type III, Type IV, and Type V.
In the United States, construction has always been one of the most dangerous industries to work in. The number of fatalities that occur in this industry year after year demonstrate this. In 2014, 19.6% of worker fatalities, in private industry, were in construction (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015) despite the industry comprising only 6.8% of the total work force. This epidemic is not unique to the United States. Essentially every country faces similar problems regarding construction safety. For example, in 2004 the Australian construction industry employed approximately 8% of the countries workforce. However, workers compensation statistics indicated that the industry’s incidence rate was 28.6 per 1000 employees, nearly twice the overall industry average (Zou, Redman & Windon, 2008). Efforts to improve upon these dismal statistics have intensified in recent years in large part due to the escalation of successful liability suits and the effect the rising cost of workers compensation insurance has on a company’s ability to do business.
The following essay is going to talk about history of Fatima Mansion and the regeneration process in the area, which has been involved in specific state supported regeneration plans since the 1980’s. These two roads connected with 1 km length. It used to be an economic center of trade in the past. Building is mostly a colonial building which combined Chinese and Portuguese known as 'Sino - Portuguese'. The outstanding features a ground floor front facade made to curve along the connecting buildings and stucco designs decorated to every part of buildings.
This module broadens our understanding on the ways in which buildings are constructed and the purpose of choosing materials and structures for buildings. This module is divided into survey, structure, materials and construction. These are taught specifically through lectures, tutorial exercises, drawings and lab test workshops. The lectures were an explanation of the topics in which our knowledge was put into practice by solving and experimenting questions during tutorials and workshops. By the end of the year, we gained great knowledge on the contents of this module by taking part in this structured order of learning and understanding in workshops and tutorials.
The physical side and the financial side have to work in a open exchange of information. The synergy of this project before it ever starts construction must come from the cooperation and adjustments made by both sides to create the best development. The physical side must take into account several things with the environmental sector. How can this site be used? What amenities or attractions can I draw from the existing environment? How can I improve the existing environment to create a more valuable development? The urban linkage must take into consideration how they are going to create their link to the surrounding environment and/or city.
According to the bureau of labor (2016)” employment in construction management is suppose to grow five percent from 2014 to 2024, about as fast as an average
From the statistical analysis result, the highest overall ratings for the levels of importance of the eight performance criteria are: timely completion of project; effectiveness on cost management; improvement of quality; profit to all involved parties; no conflicts and contractual disputes; job satisfaction of all parties; improvement of safety and health without major accidents or injuries; and improvement of environmental friendliness and controlling on waste management. Time, cost and quality are widely known as the fundamental criteria to achieved success in a project (Enshassi et. al. 2009). Timely completion of the project has become the most concerned issue in a construction project in Malaysia. According to Lim and Mohamed (2000), from the macro view, timely completion of the project has appeared to be the primary concern for the clients and stakeholders. This can be further support by Hatush and Skitmore (1997), as they stated that to ensure the contractors complete the construction project on time, some of the contracts are cover with a bonus clause. Construction cost is l...
Human beings are susceptible to the force of nature. They had to make shelter for themselves. Material was one of the most basic tools to create shelter. By development of building construction, selection and use of materials also developed. The relationship between the architecture and the materials before invention of modern materials was simple and generally naturally [1]; in the past, architects always use tradition materials according their experimental skills. For choosing structural materials, they had attention to important factors such as availability (local materials) and harmony with climate and culture [2], although this way was forward with feedback. But this relationship was not continuing simply.
As well as design, the properties of materials used in construction have major effects on the form of the building. As each material has its limits and can be shaped in restricted ways. Their properties determine how the building looks and behaves. The stone walls used in the historic examples of architecture are difficult to shape and have low strengths compared to the later discovered steel and concrete. Steel structures allow taller buildings with wide spans and free interior
In today's society we can't imagine our infrastructures without the help of civil engineers. It all started with the ancient civilizations. It started off with the Egyptians and the Mayans. In this essay I will discuss the history of civil engineering ,famous engineers and the prospects of engineering in the future years.
