When it comes to the interactions between patients and providers, the quality of healthcare services is crucial. Research indicates that it can be harmful and detrimental to a person's health to stereotype patients based on their age, color, weight, socioeconomic position, gender, or other characteristics (USC, 2015). When patients and doctors engage in this kind of stereotyping, they are creating unconscious biases and are unable to look past the apparent demographic traits in one another, which can have detrimental effects. For instance, I have a male acquaintance who works as a nurse. He is frequently mistaken for a doctor or physician. Because most people believe that only women can be nurses, they prefer to label them. The same is true for a female acquaintance of mine who works as a provider. Compared to her male colleagues, she is regarded with less respect. Throughout the years, racial stereotypes have played a major role in society. Even today, one combines racial stereotypes and prejudice thoughts before one even says a word to the person. Just seeing an African- American man while in a parking lot and pulling out ones phone, can be a simple example of modern-day racial stereotypes.
Does racism still exist today? Although many believe it was a problem in the past, it still exists today. Many People are still not aware that it still exists in our workforces, especially in medical field. Although racism in medicine can be very offense, it can sometimes be beneficial and help reveal differences in diseases based on genetic make up. These differences can be taken in the wrong manner and can lead to social problems especially if these distinctions are thought of as ethnic differences. In Gregg M. Bloche’s article. “Race, Money and Medicine”, he states that we should erase racial categories from medicine but only use them if they are beneficial for the patient’s health. Peter Clark, author of “Prejudice and the Medical Profession: A Five Year Update”, explains that racial categories should be understood because understand these different can be beneficial. Lynne D. Richardson and Marlaina Norris, authors of “Access to Health and Health Care: How Race and Ethnicity Matter”, also believe that these differences can be beneficial but want to improve the health are because they know a majority of minorities do not receive proper health care and treatment. I cannot agree more with her and the experience presented here is not restricted in the U.S. The implicit bias in health care cause similar problems in Japan as well. This quote realized me that I do have prejudices and stereotypes toward some people. I cannot help regret some disrespectful behaviors based on my bias toward patients I attended as a physician past six years. Knowing the idea of implicit bias and its possible consequenses in health care circumstances, I could have made more reliable and productive relationship with some of "difficult" patients who were often misunderstood by our colleagues.
There has been a rapid growth in minorities in the U.S. particularly the Hispanic/ Latino community. Bureau of Health Professions (2013) studies have shown that with the rapid increase of this culture, Hispanics are not being adequately understood by medical professionals because of underrepresentation within the medical field. The after effects of underrepresentation have caused healthcare issues among this population. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2006) there has been a correlation between patient satisfaction and medical professionals of the same culture.

In conclusion, stereotypes are always going to come in different shapes and forms. We may not realize it at first, but we need to know they are there. In order for stereotypes to be broken, people need to stop feeding people what they think it is to be something or someone they have no idea about. Some of these barriers can include discrimination and stereotyping between coworkers and also between patients and the healthcare staff. According to Andrews and Boyle (2016), gender can become a barrier for female nurses with males being paid a higher wage and receiving promotions quicker than females. Affirmative action is a policy that provides equal opportunities without being discriminated against (Adrews & Boyle, 2016). However, discrimination can happen when an employer is required to hire a certain percentage of minorities within their company instead of being able to actually hire the best candidate for the job based on experience, work ethic, or education. Many patients will assume that a male entering their room is a physician and therefore have more respect for them and their knowledge as opposed to a nurse. According to Devine (1989), automatic processing involves the unconscious retrieval of obtained associations that develop through memory repetition; this process links with stimulus cues in the environment. The intense nature of automaticity is that an individual cannot escape or try to ignore the process (Devine, 1989). People build and enforce stereotypes through this automatic process and have no conscious control of memory retrievals. Human bodies take a lot of effort to function, but automatic processing requires little effort. People, therefore, mostly rely on automatic thinking, rather than controlled. What is unconscious bias? When asked this question, many people are hesitant to respond or they may not know the answer. But, it is quite simple. Unconscious bias can be defined as biases that we have but are not fully aware of. It becomes just “something we do,” essentially, it has been normalized and it is something rooted in our brains. Many times unconscious bias can also be referred to as implicit bias. There are many ways to define what this simple phrase means but, the best definition comes from the Kirwan Institute. The Kirwan Institute describes implicit/unconscious bias as “the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner” (). Essentially, we may not know that we are being biased towards a certain person or group of people in our everyday lives. Many times this kind of behavior can find its way into the workplace and we being to make unconscious judgements about the employees that we work with on a day to day basis. Because they underestimate the differences among individuals in a group, stereotyping can lead to inaccurate and offensive perceptions of other people. Although stereotypes are prevalent in almost every society, becoming aware of our perceptions of others, as well as differentiating between both positive and negative stereotypes can help us overcome those stereotypes.
