The need among Americans to be diverted in ever more imaginative ways -- through high-thrill parks, virtual reality arcades, and theme restaurants, plays right into the hands of Dave Corriveau and Buster Corley, co-founders and CEO’s of Dave and Busters. The duo’s 50,000 square foot complexes include pool hall, an eye popping, cutting edge midway arcade, a formal restaurant, a casual diner, a sports bar and a nightclub rolled into one sprawling complex. In business since 1990, this is a high energy, highly efficient operation that’s comparable to a Vegas extravaganza. As a matter of fact there are even “for fun” cashless blackjack tables, with fake $10,000 chips. Pricey, but not outrageous, and you get value for your money.
My organization, Trader Joe’s, is not an international business. Their stores are all located in the United States; therefore, I chose Whole Foods, who is a main competitor of Trader Joe’s for this assignment.
According to Tyson Foods, Tyson was established in the 1930s during the Great Depression by John W. Tyson. He began hand-delivering chicken to make a living. During World War II, the demands of poultry grew, and as a result Tyson Foods prospered by feeding off the immense wartime demands. The company was passed down from father to son, rustled its way to becoming a diverse food company, and reached prodigious growth in the 1980s. Tyson has maintained a familial lineage within its company and along with its historic ties and donations to hunger and disaster reliefs, has gained great support throughout the years. Due to such support, Tyson foods can be seen all around. Tyson manufactures a plethora of fresh, frozen, and canned meats and families across the globe have become familiar with products such as Tyson Any’tizers, which are commonly served as hors d’oeuvres at parties or even as an after school snack. Due to the small size of their stores they are able to focus on customer interaction and making every customer feel welcome and valued. The next advantage is their control over inventory. Trader Joe’s carries approximately 4,000 SKU’s per location compared to big grocery stores who carry approximately 50,000 SKU’s per location. The smaller amount of inventory allows them to keep better records of inventory. Trader Joe’s is also able to eliminate products less often than big grocery stores who generally eradicate 10 to 15 products per week. The next competitive advantage that Trader Joe’s has is their private label. Approximately 80 percent of Trader Joe’s inventory is comprised of their private label. This is considered a competitive advantage because they are able to create a customer base who wants only Trader Joe’s private label products which cannot be found elsewhere. They are successful with the private label because they not only use healthier ingredients they try to identify products that their customers haven’t experienced before. This leads to the last competitive advantage, Trader Joe’s huge fan base. Trader Joe’s has extremely loyal customers; in fact, many of them have launched online efforts to persuade Trader Joe’s to open stores in their regions. Customers have not only created fan pages, but also cookbooks featuring meals prepared with Trader Joe’s private label products. Trader Joe’s customers are considered a competitive advantage because most people shop at big grocery stores because they have everything one could need for a meal. Whereas Trader Joe’s customers shop there because they love the store, allowing Trader Joe’s more freedom in product choice and inventory amount.
Costco is one of the good companies in the USA. The company has quality products that function in four different department's food, health care, employee discount cost, and some types of delivery services. The company actually sells fewer kinds of products than Wal-Mart, Giant and others, however, this means that they can keep their costs down this way. They are also able to keep costs down by charging customers a yearly fee, which allows Costco to have more brand loyalty because of this. So, Costco is a good option because it has provided better services for many years.
The Hansen Beverage company (recently changing their name to Monster Beverage Corporation on January 5th of 2012), was a family owned and operated company in the 1930’s, selling freshly squeezed juices to local film studios.
In 1945, Sam Walton opened his first variety store and in 1962, he opened his first Wal-Mart Discount City in Rogers, Arkansas. Now, Wal-Mart is expected to exceed “$200 billion a year in sales by 2002 (with current figures of) more than 100 million shoppers a week…(and as of 1999) it became the first (private-sector) company in the world to have more than one million employees.” Why? One reason is that Wal-Mart has continued “to lead the way in adopting cutting-edge technology to track how people shop, and to buy and deliver goods more efficiently and cheaply than any other rival.” Many examples exist throughout Wal-Mart’s history including its use of networks, satellite communication, UPC/barcode adoption and more. Much of the technology that was utilized helped Sam Walton more efficiently track what he originally noted on yellow legal pads. From the very beginning, he wanted to know what the customers purchased, what inventory was selling and what stock was not selling. Wal-Mart now “tracks on an almost instantaneous basis the ordering, shipment, and delivery of literally every item it sells, and that it requires its suppliers to hook into the system, enabling it to track most goods every step of the way from the time they’re made and packaged in the factories to when they’re carried out store doors by shoppers.” “Wal-Mart operates the world’s most powerful corporate computing system, with a capacity (as of late 1999) of more than 100 terabytes of data (A terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes, or roughly the equivalent of 250 million pages of text.).
The financial performance factors are the need to advance price-to-earnings ratio and the need to advance consumer base through the expansion into the global marketplace. Customer performance factors include recovering the company image by increasing organic business practices, advancing positive customer feedback, and implementing a home delivery service where it can be applied. Internal business process performance includes improving and increasing positive relationships with suppliers and farmers. Organizational learning and growth factors include providing larger advancement opportunities for employees and recovering the corporate culture with ethical farming and poultry handling. By implementing strategies with these factors in mind, Tyson Food will be able to achieve its goals.

These products serve in the candy/snack foods division of sales. Society could do without them... but why would we want to?
From just one restaurant in San Bernadino, California, run by two brothers, McDonald’s has grown to become the best known and most popular fast food restaurant chain in the world.

Through its dynamic market expansion, new products and special promotional strategies, it has succeeded in making a name for itself in the minds of the target customers. However, McDonald’s earnings has declined in the late 1990’s and 2000s. This is mainly due to a fiercely competitive industry and variety in customer tastes and preferences.

With the advent of the Internet, decreased shipping costs, and the removal of trade barriers, the world market has shrunk in such a way that everyone can be a player. While many businesses thrive solely on serving a small local area, a globalized company has the benefits of increased customer markets, gross production, and brand awareness. Take for example Coca-Cola; this multi-national corporation offers products in countries all over the world, operates in over 200 of those countries with the help of its franchisees, and is the most well-known beverage companies. It is interesting to note however, that as positive as globalization may seem, there are many negative ramifications and a large population of detractors to this movement. While increased product availability is good for profits, if a local market is inundated with imported products, locally grown or manufactured items may be squeezed out, to the detriment of the local economy. Although it is cost effective to have your product produced in another country with low wages, you are essentially taking away jobs from the people of your own country, negatively impacting your national economy. However, if you manufacture your products in a country with higher wages, you must increase your products’ prices which may be harmful to your profits. While maximizing your companies profits is always of great importance, it is essential that you weigh the pros and cons of globalization and its effects on not only your company, but the areas in which you wish to spread.
