Sometimes in life we have to do something they know is right, but other people don't know it's right at that point in time. Like in the story Antigone how she buries her brothers body even though the King Creon says no one is aloud to bury any of the bodies, because it would be intimidating to any of Thebes future attackers. He's said anyone who buries a body is going to be executed, but Antigone buries her brother anyway. Sophocles used many types of irony to show how much Antigone hates Creon for what he did to her brother and all the fallen enemy soldiers.
In many of Sophocles stories he used many different types of irony to show his character's personality. Antigone refers to “our good Creon” though she has already made clear to Ismene
that she thinks that Creon is anything but “good” for commanding that Polyneices body be left to rot (Prologue 23). Antigone already said Creon is anything but good for what he has done to her brother and all the other enemy soldiers. Sophocles was trying to show that Antigone is sarcastic and doesn’t like Creon for what he has done. Antigone tries emotionally manipulate her sister when Ismene refuses to join Antigone in disobeying Creon’s order by burying their slain brother, and Antigone defiantly orders her to “Go away… leave me to my foolish plan” (prologue 77). Antigone actually wants Ismene's help, but Antigone says she doesn’t want Ismene’s help. Sophocles was trying to show that Antigone is rebellious and doesn’t like Creon for what he has done. In many of Sophocles stories he used many different types of irony to show his character's personality. Prideful, the audience recognizes that Creon won’t be king for long, because they are already familiar with his story. This line produces a tension because the audience anticipates a different outcome than creon regarding his rule over Thebes (scene 1 line 49). Sophocles is trying to make the story suspenseful so the audience doesn't know when Creon is actually going to lose his power. Prideful, Creon thinks that man is going to be his downfall, but a woman is actually going cause it "man"(scene 1 line 43,60,85,136-138). Sophocles was trying to make a comment about how men back then were sexiest. Sophocles used many types of irony to show how much Antigone dislikes Creon for what he did to her brother and all the fallen enemy soldiers. Antigone dislikes Creon for what he has done. Creon doesn't realize he was in the wrong until the end of the story. Nowadays men don't always think that a man is going to be the downfall of them like Creon did. In the end Creon has lost everything he has worked so hard for. He lost all his his family and he lost his power of the throne.
Sophocles wrote many characters, each with complex personalities. But none a character quite like the personality of Creon from the play, Antigone. Creon is a complex character, but from the writing of Sophocles, we can reveal his true nature.
Since the play’s inception, there has always existed a contention concerning the true hero of Sophocles’ Antigone. It is a widely held belief that Antigone must be the main character simply because she and the drama share name. This is, of course, a very logical assumption. Certainly Sophocles must have at least meant her to be viewed as the protagonist, else he would not have given her the play’s title. Analytically speaking, however, Creon does seem to more categorically fit the appellation of “Tragic Hero.” There is no doubt as to the nature of the work, that being tragedy. Along with this genre comes certain established prerequisites, and Creon is the only character that satisfactorily fits them all.

In the awe-inspiring play of Antigone, Sophocles introduces two remarkable characters, Antigone and Creon. A conflict between these two obstinate characters leads to fatal consequences for themselves and their kindred. The firm stances of Creon and Antigone stem from two great imperatives: his loyalty to the state and her dedication to her family, her religion but most of all her conscience. The identity of the tragic hero of this play is still heavily debated. This tragedy could have been prevented if it had not been for Creon's pitiful mistakes.
Sophocles uses irony in his play to show the quality of Antigone. Antigone showed verbal irony when she said “I should not want you” (Prologue lines 54-55). This shows irony because she came to Ismene asking for help and now she refuses her help. Antigone was rude to Ismene when she said this because she was blunt when she said it. This showed that Antigone was prideful because no matter what happened she would not let Ismene help her. Antigone showed verbal irony when she said, “our good Creon” (prologue line 23). This shows irony because Antigone did not believe that Creon was good when he said Polyneices could not be buried. She was being sarcastic and rude towards Creon when she said this to Ismene. This shows Antigone has a rude and character.
Sophocles uses a dark and depressing mood in this quote to describe the death of Antigone and Haimon and show their love for one another. Sophocles starts off the quote by saying, “Now the dead lie in the arms of the dead (Sophocles. 1436)”. He uses a depressing mood in this phrase as the two have killed themselves and they are now with everyone else who has died. Sophocles continues to write the phrase, “They have been wedded in the house of death (Sophocles. 1437)”, Sophocles uses figurative language to describe how Antigone and Haimon have reunited with one another. The play Antigone by Sophocles is about reason and opinion and reveals how people use their voice to be heard. Antigone, a tragic drama written by Sophocles explores the different ranges of characters: static and dynamic or flat and round. Creon, King of Thebes in the dramatic play Antigone takes on the role that of a static character. Throughout the whole play Creon believed the idea that he was above the law of the Gods and his decrees cannot be disputed. Unknowingly, who would think that Creon’s sense of pride would cause him the life of his wife, son, and niece? However, at the very end of the play Creon returns to the palace, holding his son’s lifeless body, where he finds out that his wife has killed herself as well. Overwhelmed with grief about the death of his loved ones, Creon turns to the Chorus and says, “Lead me away. I have been rash and foolish. I have killed my son and wife. I look for comfort; my comfort lies here dead. Whatever my hands have touched come to nothing. Fate has brought all my pride to thought of dust” (1833). Creon takes responsibility of the death of his son and wife by calling himself a “rash” man and this is where Creon undergoes the changes of a dynamic character by admitting that he was wrong.
In the following paper, I plan to discuss the source of conflict between the title characters of Antigone and Creon in Sophocles’ “Antigone”. I also plan to discuss how each character justifies his or her actions and what arguments they give for their justifications. I will also write about the strengths and weaknesses of these arguments. The final points I try to make are about who Sophocles thinks is right and who I think is right.
Creon in the play Antigone by Sophocles plays a major role within the play. Antigone also plays an important role, as these two character’s conflicting views led to utter disaster, which highlights Creon as a tragic figure. Within the play Creon attempted to establish decisions for the common good; however, his decisions resulted in tragedy. Creon highlighted as the tragic figure, initially created decisions he thought were for the welfare and well-being of Thebes. However, Antigone, who rebelled against Creon’s decisions, caused Creon’s rage to cloud his rational way of thinking.

One example of dramatic irony is when Oedipus is looking for the killer of the king Laius-his father. The irony here is that he is looking for himself because he is the murder of his father. Oedipus knows that he killed someone, but what he does not know is that it was Laius, the one he murder. Oedipus wants to punish the person who killed Laius, but we, the audience know that Oedipus was the one who killed Laius. Also Oedipus married Jocasta without knowing that she is his mother. We, the audience knew that he was Jocasta's son, but he was unaware of that.
Antigone could also be referred to as a tragedy sub-genre. Tragedy "recounts casually related series of events in the life of a person of significance, culminating in an unhappy catastrophe, the whole treated with dignity and seriousness" (554). Antigone is one of Sophocles' many famous tragedies. It is centered around the tragic outcome that may take place in the occurrence of being prideful. Sophocles portrays that pride can result in tragedy and in disaster. In the story, Creon is prideful as his position of King and he ultimately brings his city to ruins. "Tragedy" played a major role in the story.
Throughout the world, writers have shown their concern over a particular cause through the characters of their works. On the whole, Sophocles’ has beautifully shown Antigone as an inspiration. I quote,

My search will never end until I take in chains the murderer of Laius”, in which Oedipus is unaware that he is actually the murderer.
