The purpose of this paper is to discuss the ways in which a person can prevent the progression of pre-diabetes into Type II Diabetes. Through proper diet including a reduced amount of calories per meal, decreased amounts of saturated fat and refined sugar, and implementation of portion control, one can significantly reduce body weight and BMI. By engaging in PA as few as three times and as many as six times per week, one can decrease their cholesterol, weight, blood pressure, and increase HDL levels in the blood, thus improving heart health. Teaching people who are at an increased risk of developing T2D in their lifetime due to genetics, sedentary lifestyle, and/or poor diet is a large factor in the prevention of T2D. Barnes & Hong (2012) conducted a study in which they determined that people who have T2D are two times as likely to develop depression than people who are not diagnosed with T2D. The loss of the healthy person they once were and the grieving process of coming to terms with their new reality can many times be crippling for an individual. This statistic has many contributing factors such as socioeconomic status, financial strain, new limitations, changes in body image, and more. Society affixes negative views on T2D because it is a preventable disease. Opinions such as, "They should have eaten more healthfully," or "If they had only had exercised more," or even "If only they had some self-control they would not be so overweight and not become diabetic," can really plague a person and decrease their self-esteem. A lot of people are knowledge deficient when it comes to diet, exercise, and how they can affect their health, so one can go from believing they are totally healthy to being warned that they may go blind, develop kidney failure, heart disease, and have their limbs amputated if they do not make lifestyle changes quickly.
