The date is November 12, 1997; it is a muggy night. Storm clouds crowd cover up the star-filled sky. A waitress, Nancy Forman, has just clocked out of her graveyard shift at Dan’s Diner. As she leaves she takes one step out of the door and makes a quick glance over the empty parking lot to reassure herself that she is alone. Nancy turns back and rotates the key until she hears the click of the dead blot and continues to the back of the restaurant to find her old model Ford Taurus. She has to jimmy the lock just right to open the door, as she is waiting for the car door to find its way open she hears a soft footstep approaching her. Nancy pulls the key out of the door and places the keys in between her fingers as she turns around to see a man …show more content…
Today is the middle of summer and all the kids are out on the boardwalk next to the beach eating there bubble gum flavored ice cream and staking with no regard to the “NO SKATEBOARD” sign posted less than 100 feet away. The teenagers are excited about not worrying about essay due dates, or homework assignments. They are appreciative of schools ending and its return has not crossed their minds. 3. Write a paragraph describing a chaotic place. Two days before Thanksgiving 2001, many families are out stopping for Turkeys and yams but not the Thompson family. They are stuck in the airport, flights are backed up because everyone is trying to go home for the holidays and on top of the over crowding, less that 3 months ago was 9/11. New airport security screening systems are slowing the process down even more. The Thompson family only wants to get home but after all of the cancellations and delays it does not look like they will be reunited with family until after the holidays pass. 4. The beautiful white buildings with blue capped roofs along the cliffside. Alongside the cliff is a deep blue ocean. The beauty of Greece in this time period is that the era was before technology had really advanced and the population is not consumed by smart phones and other devices. Santorini is a place you must see in person rather than through a 1200mB picture to truly appreciate the beauty. This city is a place that everyone should go if given the opportunity. I hope that one day I will get to celebrate life by looking over my white build onto the cliffside into the deep blue
As I wearily sat in my seat, writing an essay on the importance of electricity in the modern world, I caught myself glancing repeatedly at the clock that was so carefully perched above the teacher’s desk. “Ten minutes, only ten more minutes left until school is over and I get to go home!” I told myself. In most schools, the average school day is about eight hours long. Eight hours of continuously sitting in a chair taking notes during lectures, doing classwork, projects, etc. During these eight hours of school, students deserve a short, outdoor break in which they can isolate themselves from the stress of working all day and just relax. Studies have shown that people who take short breaks throughout the day to do light, outdoor breaks are more productive than those who do not. A short, outdoor break will benefit students due to the fact that students will have time to relax; students will be able to focus more, concentrate, and be more productive; and teachers will have more time to prepare for the next class coming.
When the great holiday of Thanksgiving comes to mind, most people think of becoming total gluttons and gorging themselves with a seemingly unending amount of food. Others might think of the time spent with family and friends. The whole basis of the holiday is family togetherness, fellowship, and thankfulness for blessings received during the previous year.

Textbooks in today’s schools still tell the same story that has been handed down from generation to generation. Every year children dress up and put on plays about the famous story of the first Thanksgiving. No one knows the truth though or at least people pretend to not know the embarrassing truth of our “founding fathers.” Textbooks today give the candy coated version of good saintly Englishmen come to a better world and find good neighbors willing to help in their time of need.
On September 6, 1620, 102 men, women and children from England boarded a small cargo boat called the Mayflower and set sail for the New World. The passengers left their homes in England in search of religious freedom from the King of England. Today they are known as "pilgrims."
When I was younger, the two holidays I looked forward to were always Thanksgiving and Christmas. This time of the year always is the happiest because everything feels so refreshing because I am spending quality time with the people I love most. When it comes to Thanksgiving and Christmas, I always seem to have the most memorable good and bad moments. These holidays have very different meanings but have the same feeling because it symbolizes, good food, good times with family and a whole lot of drama.
The purpose of Thanksgiving in Canada is different from the Americans. But even though the reasons for giving thanks are different, many of the customs are the same. Canadian Thanksgiving was originally started to give thanks to God for a bountiful harvest. This was when there were lots of farmers that grew crops. Now we give thanks for everything we appreciate. Some farming families still give thanks for a good crop.
I stepped out of the chilly November air and into the warmth of my home. The first snowfall of the year had hit early in the morning, and the soft, powdery snow provided entertainment for hours. As I laid my furry mittens and warm hat on the bench to dry, I was immediately greeted with the rich scent of sweet apple pie, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, and the twenty-pound turkey my mother was preparing for our Thanksgiving feast.
Life in Greece in ancient times would remind you of your own life in many ways. There was school, family, athletic competition, and social gatherings. Knowing that participants in their sporting events competed nude or that you rarely knew your husband/wife until the wedding day does however, make you grateful for the society that you live in today.
The white marble is amazing. It is a massive and expansive place and the view was breathtaking coming up the hill along the Sacred Way. At the Temple of Athena Nike I notice her wings on the relief and the delicate clothing that she is wearing. It is very hot and dry here compared to Knossos. Temple of Athena Nike.
Stories have their own way of , like a personality. If someone likes that personality, then they will most likely read more of it, right? Sherman Alexie did just that with his article and more. In, Sherman Alexie, “Slouching Towards Thanksgiving”, the dark humor in his story made it effective for the audience to enjoy and reminded me of my personality.
Students, teachers, and parents all have many things going on during the school year, so they [students] need a break from all the stress. "As long as we read or do some kind of activity during the summer and learn new things, we should not have a hard time in school," Should Summer tells us that students
first. I asked her why she did as such and she told me she started it because her father did it all
Two years ago my father came up from Georgia for Thanksgiving, and we all stayed at my Grandmother’s house. Most of our close family was coming to my grandmother’s house for dinner, with that being said, we had a lot of food to cook. We are halfway through cooking/baking food for Thanksgiving, which was the next day, and the oven broke. I thought it was the funniest thing I have ever seen, but my grandmother was mortified. So we start surfing the web looking for a store that was open and sold ovens. We finally found a Lowes that was open, and when we got there they had one stove/oven that would fit in my grandmother’s house. We then asked the worker that we would buy that one, but he said that someone already was on the phone with the store
... still a wonderful time for many families and communities. Legislators need not pursue one-size-fits-all solutions to "fix" the school calendar. Rather it’s time to acknowledge that 19-century school practices may be much easier for interested families. It should be much easier for interested families to find schools that operate into or through the summer. Summer vacation can be a grand thing. But in the 21st Century, for many children and families, it may also be an anachronism.
