The Harlem Blues “Sonny's Blues” by James Baldwin is told by the narrator, Johnny about his brother and their family. The story shows how the two brother relationship changes over time, while growing up in Harlem New York. Music brings Sonny out of the darkness and show Johnny the light. James Baldwin uses the blues and the imagery of light and dark to showcase, the trials and hardship of the two brothers and Harlem itself. The story starts off dark when Johnny finds out Sonny is in jail: “I just stared at it, at the newsprint spelling out his name, spelling out the story” (Baldwin 74). Sonny was a good boy and Johnny couldn't believe what had happened to his baby brother. “I didn't want to believe that I'd ever see my brother going down, coming to nothing, all that light in his face gone out, in the condition I'd already seen so many others” (Baldwin 74). Yet Johnny is still in Harlem and does not leave. He got married and had three children. Sonny is trapped with Isabella parents, which he hated while trying to finish school, he looks to music to save him: “Sonny was so serious about his music and how, as soon as he came in from school, or wherever he had been when he was supposed to be at school, he went straight to that piano and stayed there until suppertime” (Baldwin 88). Johnny is trapped in a different sense; as he has made himself a life, but still he is trapped within the realms of Harlem. Again Baldwin uses darkness with the death of Johnny daughter Grace: “She was a beautiful little girl. But she only lived a little over two years. She died of polio and she suffered” (Baldwin 98). After this event Johnny finally contacts Sonny: “I think I may have written Sonny the very day that little Grace was buried. I was sitting in the living room in the dark, by myself, and I suddenly thought of Sonny. My trouble made his real” (Baldwin 79).
