In the early 1990s, a series of studies conducted by Kyllonen and Christal came to the conclusion that a specific type of memory is almost synonomous with our ability to reason.
Working memory is what you might call immediate memory. It’s your capacity to store several images and sounds in your head at the same time.
Kyllonen and Christal’s studies found an incredibly high correlation between working memory and intelligence. In a series of four experiments, they measured people’s reasoning ability as well as their ability to hold different items in their mind at the same time. They discovered that these two abilities were correlated in the range of 80 to 90 percent. Correlations this high are virtually unheard of.
The results were so striking that they authored the paper Reasoning Ability is (Little More Than) Working-Memory Capacity?! The paper became extremely influential during the ’90s. The authors themselves were half-joking when they titled the paper, but many scientists began to question whether this could actually be true.

The Nurture vs. Nature has been a long standing debate amongst psychologists. This psychological controversy questions whether or not the environment has more or less to do with the outcome of a child’s psychological development than the genetics involved. The nurture side of the argument is highly illustrated by the memoir The Other Wes Moore, by Wes Moore, due to the fact that both of their lives although starting off similar, ended dramatically different.
“Working Memory Training is an evidence-based intervention for improved attention.” Working memory training is designed to help those with specific mind disorders. The main idea behind this program is to use brain training techniques such as monotonous memory trails, to teach people to train their mind to better perform. Working memory training is also considered to be a good alternative to medication supplements for those who cannot take them. For example, say you have just been diagnosed with ADHD and you are prescribed medication from your doctor. Over period of time while taking your medication, you find that the medication helps with your ADHD but it causes you to feel depressed, a common side effect of most brain disorder medications. So instead of continuing the medication, you take on the working memory training program. Though there have been numerous studies proving that working memory training is helpful, there have also been studies that say otherwise. In recent years, these studies have proven that the training does not have as big of an effect on specifics such as attention, reading and language skills as it does with short-term memory. This does not mean that working memory training is useless. Over time, new developments of this program have proven to successfully improve brain function not only with those suffering from ADHD but also indecent educational performance, dyslexia, and several language disorders. With this information, we can only hope to continue furthering our research in order to better help those struggling with brain disorders. Professor Bigot argues that intelligence is only influenced by nature, meaning it is entirely based in genetics, and that one's environment or surroundings can't influence it. However, Dr. Bigot's argument does have some truth to it. With the purpose of investigating the role of genetics in intelligence, researchers have approached twin studies. According to Bouchard and McGue (1981), the closer the biological relationship, the higher the IQ correlation is. This idea was the result of a meta-analysis of 111 studies of IQ correlations between siblings from research studies on intelligence. The Minnesota Twin Study (Bouchard et al. 1990) studies identical twins raised together and identical twins raised apart. Bouchard et al (1990) concluded that 70% of intelligence is associated to genetic inheritance. Therefore, 30% of intelligence may be attributed to other factors. Although the Minnesota Twin Study has been one of the most impressive twin studies carried out, there are several criticisms that test its validity. One of its greatest criticisms was the "equal environment assumption", which states that it can't be assumed that twins reared together are exposed to the same environment.
