It all started in Columbus Ohio. A young boy found his love for singing with his two friends and together they started Twenty One Pilots. Tyler Joseph is now the only original band member left and with Josh Dun their band is becoming increasingly popular. When the movie Suicide Squad came out in the summer of 2016 so did Twenty One Pilots song “Heathens.” “Heathens” is now being played all over the radio and becoming more and more popular. “Heathens” main meaning is to be sensitive to others. Tyler Joseph wanted “Heathens” to explain to his first and hardcore fans, the Skeleton Clique, that they should not judge the new fans. Joseph uses phrases such as “ Please don’t make any sudden moves,” and imagery of conflict to help deliver the message to listeners. When the listener listens to the phrase “Please don’t make any sudden moves,” it jolts them to think why should they not make any sudden moves which is then explained why in the next line. In the next line of lyrics imagery of abuse comes to the listener’s mind. In the chorus this line is “ You don’t know half of the abuse.” The word abuse is like a trigger word and the audience is thinking of their personal abuse that either they do themselves or what other’s have done to them. When the audience hears the chorus again the connection between “Please don’t make any sudden moves,” and “You don’t know half of the abuse,” becomes clear. The listener realizes that they do not know other people’s issues or abuse and that the listener should not be so judgemental. Another part of the lyrics that appeals to the audience’s emotion is “Just because we check the guns at the door / Doesn't mean our brains will change from hand grenades.” These lyrics relate to a person’s emotion because of how the lyrics talks about mental health. Joseph is trying to say that even if people can hide their mental issues their mind is still dangerous.
