It happened so fast no one even noticed. One Thursday evening we made sure to plop on the couch at 6:30 P.M. precisely; not to miss the next episode of our favorite T.V. show. The same show we have committed ourselves to for the last three years. Next, we began to watch eye-catching T.V. shows four episodes at a time, every chance we acquire; enabling any seven-season series to wrap up within a one month period. Binge watching an entire T.V. series on Netflix has become considerably more satisfying than watching over years, as television originally releases each season. The main reason we have turned our backs on regular television, leaving it in the dust, is because rising industries are surpassing former T.V. experience. These days we expect everything instant and without hesitation; which is where Netflix saw an advantage to improve the experience previously provided by television. Originally, popular episodes on television released weeks from each other, with months between seasons, and years between premieres and finales. Whereas during the rising era of a digital world, Netflix can release every season in T.V. series’ at once- introducing the ability to binge-watch and eliminating the prolonged wait. Gratefully, using Netflix we skip suspenseful cliffhangers during the breaks between commercials, episodes, and seasons. We immediately get to play the next episode to fulfill any curiosities. Unlike, ending an episode on T.V. that leaves viewers anxious for what is to happen next. Awaiting that next episode for weeks, fans are left unfocused to dwell on further details to create sense of the final mystery left to unravel. Equally, Netflix allows subscribers instant viewing of upcoming episodes to answer any withheld details. Entertainment viewers are not forced to settle for a forty-five-minute interval; anxiously awaiting the next new episode to come out. No longer are we left to wonder in suspense. Influenced by all of society’s new obsession with binge-watching, other services like Hulu and Amazon followed shortly behind Netflix’s lead. All in all, society is forcing companies to become what we yearn or they will be left on the back burner, soon to be forgotten. We sway into on-demand entertainment with ease since we now get to watch our favorite shows non-stop. In effect, entertainment services are having to conform to society’s new desire and love for binge-watching. Our habits directly affect the successfulness of entertainment industries, whether we realize it or not. Netflix has become exactly the type of entertainment service we seek - television series’ that are available suddenly and without delay. The company comes into play by developing a subscription-based streaming platform for movies and television shows. Unlike the traditional movie rental businesses such as Blockbuster and Redbox, Netflix’s innovation offers service via Internet, and it does not have any physical stores but instead delivers DVDs through postal mail in the U.S. Since then, Netflix has become the world’s leading internet television network with constant growth of customers to over 48 millions members in more than 40 countries in the North America, Europe, and the Latin America (Netflix, 2014). In this analysis, the main focus is examining the current market environment for Netflix. It identifies the type of market structure that Netflix is currently competing. The analysis also expands on the competitions, product differentiation, pricing strategy, and measuring the level of easy entry-and-exit.
After receiving a ridiculously high fee for returning a movie late, Reed Hastings said that there had to be a better way to rent and watch movies and TV shows from the comfort of their own homes. Hence, in 1997 Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph, a software executive, co-found what is known today as Netflix, “the world’s leading internet subscription service for enjoying movies and TV shows,” (Netflix, Facts). The purpose of this paper is to the process of exchange between Netflix and their customers, as well as Netflix’s approach to relationship marketing and how this marketing technique has helped Netflix leave their competitors in the dust when it comes to customer satisfaction.
Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix headquartered in Los Gatos, CA, began the company’s operations in 1997 after receiving an enormous late charge from a movie rental he returned long overdue. However, Hastings had the desire to be different than traditional movie outlets; whereas, customers had to drive to the location, pay a certain amount for each movie they rented, and were given a deadline in which to return the movie. Instead of using a method established by other video markets “to attract customers to a retail location, Netflix offered home delivery of DVDs through the mail” which eventually led to a booming business towards streaming forms of entertainment (Shih, Kaufman, & Spinola, 2009, p. 3). Today, Netflix exists along with several competitors; however, offers the most streaming content available for viewing, and continues to grow its subscriber base both domestically and globally. Although, direct and indirect competitors, acquisition costs, and several barriers present a financial threat for Netflix, the company has managed to grow with the acclamation of partnerships, expand to international territories, and vastly increase its price in shares of stock.
As the firm moves forward, top managers must pay attention to staying unique to sustain a competitive advantage. Netflix does not own their content, nor do they have any tangible assets. Netflix is a part of a broad range of network users. As technology continues to grow exponentially, Netflix will have to be readily adaptive to change and innovation. Technology never stops growing and evolving, therefore, Netflix’s business platform should never stop growing and evolving. At the same time, they must be careful to remain user friendly and customer centric by keeping the technology at a level where users will not have to obtain a certain set of technological skill sets.
This essay examines three reality TV shows: MTV's The Real World: Denver, CBS's Survivor: Cook Islands, and the FX network's miniseries Black. White. The essay argues that the reality shows promote differences in individuals. Each reality show positioned race as the main factor in the conflicts the cast members experienced while on the show. The shows put the cast members in situations that reinforced “cultural codes” (Bell-Jordan) and stereotypes. The cast members of each of the shows were put into situations that were constantly enforcing racial stereotypes, done on purpose by the producers. In the essay, the author argues that media makes the viewers have a struggle in what they choose to believe. She also states that society participates in an unconscious struggle on how to discern what they see on the television. Society is in a fight to discover what is the meaning behind what they are watching on the television. Viewers are not realizing the material being transmitted to them on the television is causing an impact on how they look at individuals of other races. An individual is unconsciously accepting all that is being transmitted to them, but they must decide how valid what is being portrayed about certain races. Producers give specific roles and place stereotypes on individuals in order to gain viewers. Producers place stereotypes on the cast of their show because it attracts attention from viewers; the producers stereotyped the models on the show Americas Next Top Model. One of the first points that Johnson brings up is Multi Threading. Since the early 2000’s, many shows have taken advantage of this device. Shows such as “The Sopranos”, “24”, and “Lost” all take advantage of multi threading. Just to prove the point that this is what the people want, all three of these shows were very popular. In fact, they all lasted for at least 6 seasons each, with “24” going for 8 seasons. The idea of multi threading is to create multiple plots all going on in a single episode. Yet, at the end of the episode usually all of the plots become tied into each other. This causes the viewer to think ahead of time. It leaves you wondering what is going to happen later in the episode, or even what could happen down the line. Often, so many subtle things are said that the viewer may not even realize what was said or done was important until an event occurs.
Streaming video content over the internet continues to grow in popularity with consumers for a variety of reasons, including the widespread availability of high speed internet, attractive video content, easy to use video streaming devices and the rising cost of cable television service. Some consumers use streaming video to enhance or supplement the typical offerings available from their local cable provider. Others take a more extreme approach and use streaming video as a means to eliminate the need for a cable television subscription altogether. Presently consumers cancelling their cable TV subscriptions are still considered a minority of all subscribers; nevertheless their steadily increasing numbers have earned the moniker of “cord cutters.” Those looking to ditch cable TV can also find a growing number of online resources that will ease their transition to cheaper online television viewing.

Television has a been a medium for storytelling for a very long time and is similar to radio and film in that it gives you the best of both worlds. Where radio can give you an intense detailed story over a longer period of time and film can also give you an intense detailed story it has to do it in less time but you actually get to see what’s happening rather than just visualizing it yourself. That is why TV storytelling is so awesome because it allows you to see what is happening and also lets a story be told over a long period of time through multiple episodes.
