To what extent is truth different in mathematics, the arts and ethics? We have always had difficulties defining the real definition of truth in each area of study. This will result into the topic of relativism, which says that there is no definite truth. However, this theory is not particularly correct. According to the dictionary, the word truth can be interpreted to many variations of meaning: the state of being true, accordance with fact or reality, and a belief that is accepted as true (Oxford Dictionary). Mathematics is based on a fixed system of rules about numbers, structure, space and change. Because of how mathematics is based on a fixed system of rules, as a result, the truth in mathematics is also fixed. Take this mathematical idea for example, “the radius of a circle will always be half of the diameter” (MathOpenRef para 3). This shows how a mathematical idea is fixed and cannot be changed, if this idea is changed, then the statement would be false. In other words, the truth in mathematics is based on many fixed principles that had been universally accepted. This means that a single piece of artwork can be categorized into many movements of arts, according to how people see it. For example, if one were to look at an artwork called “The Starry Night”, by Vincent van Gogh. As said earlier, some people might categorized it into the post-impressionism movement, while some might categorized it into the expressionism movement. As a result of using many vivid colors and real-life subject matter, it was categorized into the post-impressionist movement, and the artist also employs a lot of meaning through his artwork, which is a characteristic of the expressionism movement. To be more specific, the truth in this artwork can change, again, according to how people see it. Which means that it’s not wrong to look at truth differently in this artwork, it’s just the truth that is subjective to one’s opinion. People can have many different opinions depending on a topic, but what is truly difficult is getting a complete level of understanding from every opinion, or understanding the point of view of each opinion. Art has been around for as long as humanity has existed, and it is much more than just drawings or paintings. Art is what every a person makes of it. Art can be drawings, paintings, writings, or even dancing, but never is it contained to just one of those things. As we explore just two aspect of art it is important to realize that there is no right or wrong way to look at the art. Art comes in many different forms, in which they are all interpreted a little differently by different people. For me, when I read a poem I do not instantly know what the poet is trying to say and I don’t find it as interesting, but when I look at a painting so many more thoughts comes and I can’t help by imagine what that artist was thinking while he was painting.
The article Artists Mythologies and Media Genius, Madness and Art History (1980) by Griselda Pollock is a forty page essay where Pollock (1980), argues and explains her views on the crucial question, "how art history works" (Pollock, 1980, p.57). She emphasizes that there should be changes to the practice of art history and uses Van Gogh as a major example in her study. Her thesis is to prove that the meaning behind artworks should not be restricted only to the artist who creates it, but also to realize what kind of economical, financial, social situation the artist may have been in to influence the subject that is used. (Pollock, 1980, pg. 57) She explains her views through this thesis and further develops this idea by engaging in scholarly debates with art historians and researcher, and objecting to how they claim there is a general state of how art is read. She structures her paragraphs in ways that allows her to present different kinds of evidences from a variety sources while using a formal yet persuasive tone of voice to get her point across to the reader.
Mark Twain, an American author and humorist, once stated that “Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't.” (Quotes about truth) Truth is defined as “the quality or state of being true.” (Free Merriam Webster). As there are various ways to plug truth into context, multiple different theories are used to categorize truth. Three of which will be reflected in this essay in order to discuss some similarities, but furthermore to point out the differences of truth for the areas of knowledge, mathematics, natural science, and the arts.
The concept of truth has been a major topic for discussions and discourses, there are multiple theories based on truth. In the works of G. E. Moore and Bertrand Russell truth is defined as facts, and corresponds to the way things actually are. Moore defines it as “[there is no] difference between truth and the reality to which it is supposed to correspond” (Glanzberg, 2016). Another concept of truth is called the “absolute truth”, many philosophers argue that there is no absolute truth. The reason for their being no absolute truth vary from ideas like truth is subjective to people, truth is a matter of opinion and that truth is relative to different cultures, traditions and religions (Glanzberg, 2016). Because of this, these two areas of knowledge are usually picked as the best in terms of gaining absolute certainty. Both are supported and backed by numbers and this makes the two more precise, which makes it a lot more accepted and understandable than ethics and religions. Art is the exploration of what it is to be alive, to be human and struggling to understand one’s role within society and identity in general. By stretching the limits of what is acceptable, the artist questions preconceived ideas of what is ugly and beautiful, important and unimportant. These ideas in art and society are influenced by the emergence of new technologies that expand human understanding. Since technology improves and human understanding is bolstered by these theories (both philosophical and scientific), then art will always have a place. The artist’s place is to criticize and express the tendencies and attitudes of himself and of society. Even if those feelings are marginalized, their expression makes the audience aware of them, and begs them to ask questions of themselves.
Different art movements are created as a reflection of the type of response to the existing or older art movement. It does not necessarily mean scrapping the old to make way for the new. In art, the new movement always takes with it part of the past, but what makes it distinct is the new and fresh perspective that it brings to the table that wasn't present or appreciated before. If anything, the chronology of art movements is testament to the growth process of the world of art, proof of how the art has evolved ever since. Impressionism and Post-Impressionism are two art movements that happened in succession, and the characteristics of and existence of Post Impressionism reflects how Post Impressionism is a reaction to the earlier Impressionism and how Post Impressionism, despite its efforts to introduce something new, still retains many important characteristics found in Impressionism.
Conversely, upon investigating the artwork’s factual information such as the painting’s context, the artist’s background, the genre and the school or movement associated with the painting, it is possible to obtain knowledge that combines objective information and subjective opinion, confirming that some degree of objectivity, albeit with our ‘cultural imprint’, is possible as an art observer.
What exactly is truth? What is true? These questions are two completely different questions. In order to answer what is true, you must first determine what truth actually is. If we look in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, we see the definition that says “The things that are true”. This is not what we are looking for in a definition of this word, but really there is no defining line between what is true, and what is not.
What is math? If you had asked me that question at the beginning of the semester, then my answer would have been something like: “math is about numbers, letters, and equations.” Now, however, thirteen weeks later, I have come to realize a new definition of what math is. Math includes numbers, letters, and equations, but it is also so much more than that—math is a way of thinking, a method of solving problems and explaining arguments, a foundation upon which modern society is built, a structure that nature is patterned by…and math is everywhere.
Art can be defined in many ways by an individual. One can say that any creative output by a person is considered art. Others contend that art must conform to a societal standard and the basis of the creation should be understood by most intellectual people. For example, some contend that computer-generated images, such as fractals, are not art due to the large role played by a computer. E.O. Wilson states “the exclusive role of the arts is to intensify aesthetic and emotional response. Works of art communicate feeling directly from mind to mind, with no intent to explain why the impact occurs” (218). A simple definition may be that art is the physical expression of the ideals formed by the mind.
Truth can be defined as conformity to reality or actuality and in order for something to be “true” it must be public, eternal, and independent. If the “truth” does not follow these guidelines then it cannot be “true.” Obviously in contrary anything that goes against the boundaries of “truth” is inevitably false. True and false, in many cases does not seem to be a simple black and white situation, there could sometimes be no grounds to decide what is true and what is false. All truths are a matter of opinion. Truth is relative to culture, historical era, language, and society. All the truths that we know are subjective truths (i.e. mind-dependent truths) and there is nothing more to truth than what we are willing to assert as true (Hammerton, Matthew). A thing to me can be true while for the other person it may not be true. So it depends from person to person and here the role of perception comes into play. As truth is a vital part of our knowledge, the distinctions between what is true and what is false, shape and form the way we think and should therefore be considered of utmost importance. We often face this situation in real life through our learning curves and our pursuit of knowledge to distinguish between what is true and what is false. The idea of there being an absolute truth or also known as universal truth has been debated for centuries. It depends on many factors such as reason, perception and emotion.
In my Theory of Knowledge class, I learned that belief and truth can be very contrasting ideas. In my opinion, I can believe something that may not necessarily be true. However, there can also be truth that is impossible for me to believe. Belief is a mental state in which someone is confident in the existence of something, but may not necessarily have objective proof to support their claim. Truth is objective and public; it is eternal and unchanging without biast. People can believe in something different and can also all believe in the same idea. The overlap between truth and belief creates knowledge; therefore, an acquisition of knowledge will bring us further to what we believe to be a ‘truth’. Knowledge can be acquired in several ways, such as using emotion, reason and sense perception. These ways of knowing affect how we perceive reality, and help us create our beliefs.
