The Effects of Troy’s Infidelity Cheating changed Troy’s life for the worse, as evident in his family's sudden indifference towards him and their rejection of his presence and affection. Most significantly, Troy’s affair altered the behavior of his son, Cory, who went from seeking approval to showing disdain, and his wife, Rose, who transitioned from loving and supportive to distant and cold. Before finding out that Troy had impregnated another woman, Rose showered Troy with love and compassion, acting as his best friend in their joyful marriage, shown in her unwavering support and affection towards him. This then leads to an argument between Rose and Troy, about Cory’s football career which escalates to Troy becoming physically rough with Rose, and she said, “‘Troy. You’re hurting me.’ Rose, then (Troy, surprised, is thrown off balance just as CORY throws a glancing blow that catches him on the chest and knocks him down)” (2.1). While arguing, Troy grabs Rose’s arm in a tight grip, and Cory recognizes that she’s in pain and needs help. Cory then successfully assisted Rose by throwing Troy to the ground, and after thinking about what his father had done to his mother by hurting her physically and cheating on her, Cory lost respect for Troy. Along with the lost respect, Cory also disposed of wanting his father’s approval. This can be seen when Cory said, “I ain’t got to say excuse me to you. You don’t count around here anymore” (2.4). As shown, Cory no longer cares about Troy. Cory had tried to step over Troy while he was sitting on the porch steps and didn’t say excuse me, which angered Troy.
