Similarities Between Fences And The Great Gatsby

Individuals read books and plays in order to relate life to the characters. In both works of literature, The Great Gatsby by: F.Scott Fitzgerald and Fences by: August Wilson different characters show that they wanted to achieve better goals for their future. In The Great Gatsby the characters allows emotions of love to drive them. In both works the characters struggle with in their lives. The character’s demonstrate their limits within their everyday lives. The characters lead very different lives within the stories. Although some may say that one’s motivation does not differ based on Daisy and Troy’s gender. Motivation actually comes from what one proposes to do or by someone by the gender.
In the book of The Great Gatsby Daisy was the character

that got chosen because she can be compared through a situation that Troy was going through. Daisy was a married women to Tom but she had an affair with another man and his name was Gatsby. This is an example that can be compared to Troy because he also had an affair with another woman and her name was Alberta. In instance, to support this with Daisy “ Daisy began to sing with the music in a husky, rhythmic whisper, bringing out a meaning in each word that it had never had before and would never have again. When the melody rose, her voice broke up sweetly, following it, in a way contralto voices have, and each change tipped out a little of her warm human magic upon the air” (F. Scott Fitzgerald, pg.108). This quote is trying to say that Daisy was thinking about a memory when she had an affair with Gatsby because she knew what the right thing was for her to do. Daisy chose to be and stay with Tom because she knew that her husband would give her anything she wanted like accomplishing something she wanted for her future. A song that was found on youtube that showed that Daisy wanted to fight her battles and achieve her dreams with all her issues she was having is called “Battles By: The Afters https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lACswX-cUAg.” This song goes with Daisy because even though she was going through a lot of problems within her marriage with Tom she would try to fight her battles to not get separated with Tom. A piece from the song to show about Daisy is “ Your love is my armor, I fear no evil, Darkness runs from your light, So I won’t be afraid, I won’t be afraid, You’re going before me and oceans are parting, Your fighting my battles, When my feet are failing and my heart is shaking, Your fighting my battles”. This song is trying to say that no matter what happens in your relationship you still fight for the love of your life and always be there for each other no matter what. Even though Daisy made an error of having an affair with another guy she realized that even though she knew Gatsby before Tom her heart belonged more to Tom because she loves Tom more than Gatsby. The quote is trying to say that even though you are at a young age there will always be consequences to face in your lives. In instance, it is also trying to say that you need to face all your mistakes you have done so that it won’t be repeated again in your lives.
Troy was the character that got chosen from the book of Fences by: August Wilson because he wanted the best for his family even though he had an affair with another women.

Troy had faced through so many consequences with in his marriage with Rose. A quote to support that Troy had tried his best to give everything to Rose is “ I ain’t ducking the responsibility of it. As long has it sets right in my heart . . . then I’m okay. Cause that’s all I listen to. It’ll tell me right from wrong every time. And I ain’t talking about doing Rose no bad turn. I love Rose. She done carried me a long ways and I love and respect her for that” (August Wilson, pg 63). This states that it is a comparison between Daisy from The Great Gatsby because Daisy had gone through so many problems with her marriage but all she wanted was the best for her to accomplish an American Dream for her future even though Troy had helped her a lot. This song goes with Troy because no matter how he was feeling through his emotions with Rose he had still loved her even though he had an affair with another women. The part from the song that will show that Troy had never felt his love for Rose is “ I see you dressed in white, Every wrong made right, I see a rose in bloom, At the sight of you, Oh so priceless, Irreplaceable, Unmistakable, Incomparable, Darling it’s beautiful, I see it all in you, Oh so priceless”. These pieces of evidence from the song support with Troy because the song is trying to say that no matter how Rose looked of who she was Troy still loved her the same way ever since the first day he had met her. Troy did not care what others think about him because all he cared was to protect his family and give them what they wanted to accomplish something in the future.
Daisy and Troy being a men varies a women, it means that they both want to have a better life by accomplishing a goal for their future.

Troy and Daisy had an affair with another person while being married. Some may say that one’s motivation differs based on Daisy and Troy’s roles as a gender. This piece of evidence is trying to say that Daisy is trying to express the way she is feeling about how her daughter because she does not want her to be like her mom. Also it states that Daisy will not be as happy as she is right now with Tom because she wants her daughter to have what is right for her and try to accomplish an American Dream. Daisy wants her to be fool meaning like getting judged by others. Some may say that Troy was not a good man based on the gender because he would not have what he wanted for his future as he got older. A quote to show this about Troy is “ Sometimes I wish I hadn’t known my daddy. He ain’t cared about nothing about no kids. A kid to him

wasn’t nothing. All he wanted was for you to learn how to walk so he could start you to working. When it come time for eating . . . he ate first. If there was anything left over that’s what you got. Man would sit down and eat two chickens and give you the wing” (Wilson, pg.50). This quote is trying to say that Troy will not be a good father to Cory because he never had an opportunity as what Cory is getting now in College. Troy’s influence would be to show who he is and be with his family and give them what they want to accomplish a dream for their future. Troy will mention about his father because that is a way why Troy will not be there for Cory only because his dad would not influence him due to conditions that had occurred. Another quote is “ My daddy ain’t had them walking blues! What you talking about? He stayed right there with his family. But he was just as evil as he could be. My mama couldn’t stand him. Couldn’t stand the evilness. She run off when I was about eight. She sneaked off one night after he had gone to sleep. Told me she was coming back for me. I ain’t never seen her no more. All his women run off and left him. He wasn’t good for nobody. When my turn come to head out, I was fourteen and got to sniffing around Joe Canewell’s daughter. This supports why Troy would not care about his gender because all he wants to do is accomplish an American Dream and have a better life even though he had an affair with another women. Even though Troy and Daisy had an affair with another person they still wanted to fight for their battles meaning what is right for them in order to accomplish the American Dream and be themselves.
In conclusion, Daisy and Troy had some similarities and differences that had shown that Daisy and Troy wanted to keep their relationship safe and accomplish a goal for their future. In instance, even though Troy and Daisy had an affair with another person they both wanted the best for themselves.
