Attendance, good attitude and sportsmanship, and the desire to improve are all great attributes for athletes to have. Since these attributes are not showcased in all people who participate in sports, they still manage to get trophies. To some parents, trophies for participation are very important but to others, they disagree. In my opinion, participation trophies are not necessary because kids can learn from their mistakes, strive to improve, and work hard to actually deserve trophies.
My first point is that you can learn from your mistake. According to the text, it is okay to let your child fail so they will try harder. (Website 1) One of the biggest ways you can improve is by looking at your mistakes and learning from them. Therefore, you will not experience success until you make mistakes. Also according to Ashley Merryman, co- author of “Top Dog: The Science Of Winning And Losing,” “They don’t give our kids room to make mistakes and learn from those mistakes.” So therefore, participation trophies are not helpful because in order to reach success, you have to be willing to try hard and overcome failure or mistakes. By not agreeing that participation trophies are good, I’m not trying to say that you have to win, I am just saying that you should try to improve and get better. When you get participation trophies, you don’t have the pressure to win because you know you will get a trophy no matter what. Ashley Merryman stated that, “The benefit of competition is not actually winning, the benefit is improving.” (Website 2) Therefore, kids will never improve if they always get trophies for free because they will just assume they are always going to get
