Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities in order to meet project requirements (PMBOK Guide, 2008). Using this definition, it is made evident that the parties involved in the Denver International Airport (DIA) Baggage System project in the 1990’s failed at applying basic organizational practices towards managing the triple constraint of scope, time, and cost goals. The combination of inherent risks, uncertainties, and dysfunctional decision making geared the project towards disappointment while simultaneously designating it as a text book example of what not do when taking on a complex project. By looking at the key strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats we can pull together a basic plan of action that would have set the DIA’s baggage handling system as a marvel model of rapid automation.
This part focuses on the historical backdrop of the Progressive Era, an age when political and monetary flexibilities extended for some. The sad 1911 fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company showed the overall feeling in America that the administration must be more in charge of the prosperity of its kin. The part proceeds with a gander at developing urbanization and movement, mud slingers' reactions to these powers, and the rise of a buyer society that conveyed another importance to opportunity - purchaser flexibility. Based on this, it is clear that projects are of utmost importance to businesses in both the service and the manufacturing industries.

In one of the darkest moments of America’s industrial history, the Triangle Shirtwaist Company factory in New York City burns down, on this day in 1911. The tragedy led to the development of a series of laws and regulations that better protected the safety of factory workers. The Triangle Waist Company factory occupied the eighth, ninth, and tenth floors of the 10-story Asch Building on the northwest corner of Greene Street and Washington Place, just east of Washington Square Park, in the Greenwich Village area of New York City. The factory produced women's blouses, known as "shirtwaists." The factory normally employed about 500 workers, mostly young immigrant women, who worked nine hours a day.
