The first stage of my life centers around my childhood when I immigrated to America on December 2, 2002. I had never gone as far as America to feel as though I was in a new world. I felt happy and excited to start a new life here.I remembered seeing the Statue of Liberty, tasting my first hamburger, and being pushed around by the countless New Yorkers in the city. The lesson that I took into consideration was this was definitely the place to reinvent myself in. The next transition into my life was truly a magnificent one, it was when my mother gave birth to my younger brother. During that moment I felt very emotional and delighted to have a sibling in my life. I can still recall the feeling of the smooth baby skin and hearing my brother …show more content…
No one I knew was there and I was way too shy to meet new people easily. As I recalled that very day, I could see the crowded hallways, and the taste the first gross lunch in high school. It took a handful of time, but in long run I made amazing new friends, built a great relationships with my teachers and engaged in new clubs. All in all I was ready to tackle anything high school had to throw at me. The lesson I took from my transition into high school was it’s a huge learning experience, you don’t have to be perfect to make it through …show more content…
I was the first one in my family to attend college. I knew college would allow me to be more free in many ways like building a career, studying abroad, and extending my knowledge. Till this day, I can look back to when I my parents were crying out of joy that their child was going to college, something that they were not given the opportunity to attend due to difficult circumstances. All in all, it was my first stepping stone into achieving my goals. The lesson I took away from this was college isn’t an ordinary school it’s basically institution to teach us how to become successful in our own passions that we couldn’t express in high
College takes a serious toll on people, some are able to strive through and come out on top and some suffer from outside family issues, can’t financially keep up with school or just lack the skills that are needed for higher education. College sometimes just isn’t for everyone; and students can’t handle it all like I couldn’t myself.
Caroline Bird writes the statement in her 1975 article “The Case Against College (Bird 15-18)” that not every high school graduate is ready to attend college. It is 2010 and this article is still valid today. Some of the college students I have been around were not mature enough for obedience school let alone college. A few of the points she makes in the article are: College has never worked its magic for everyone. Does it make you a better person? Are colleges responsible for your children? Are my children living in a country club? I will use some of my own experiences as an example of college life, as well as examples from my daughter’s college experience, along with my nephews as well. All to find the answer to the big question: Are you ready for a college education?
As the economy evolves and the job market continues to get more competitive, it’s becoming harder to have a successful career without some kind of college degree. This creates a belief in many young students that college actually is a commodity, something they must have in order to have a good life. There’s many different factors that influence this mindset, high schools must push the importance of the student’s willingness and drive to further their education. College isn’t just a gateway to jobs, but it is an opportunity to increase knowledge and stretch and challenge the student which in return makes them a more rounded adult and provides them with skills they might lack prior to
As I boarded the plane to move to the United States, the beginning of September 2005, I couldn’t help but think about all that I left behind; My family, my friends, my school, my clothes, and all of the awesome cultural food. Then again, I looked forward to this new life, a new beginning. I imagined it being like life in the movies, where everything seemed easy and life was just beautiful. After all, I was going to the States; the place where most people only dreamt of. I felt very blessed to have this opportunity because I knew that it wasn’t given to everyone. Coming to America marked my coming of age because I left behind my old life, I started life afresh, and I became a much grateful person.
All of the experiences that college brings are designed to shape students as people to make them more proactive members of the modern society. In other words, college is where kids are made into men and women. In many ways it's also a trial by fire to see who has the right focus to make it through. These trials, scary as they may seem, all shape the graduates of today. Well the graduates anyways. “It forces you to grow up. It's just all about learning how to live on your own. I matured a ton and I still mature every day” (Paoli). College gives students the resources they need to survive in the modern world and so much
During high school, whether it is by a teacher, parent or classmate a student will be advised to go to college. “College is where you find yourself,” they will say. College is made to seem as the place where students will attain a brilliant education, thus making them feel as though once they are done with the schooling, a dependable job of high pay will appear for them. In our society, college is not a scarce option, but rather, an expectation. For many graduating high schoolers, college is the next step. Attaining a college degree is not necessary for creating a life for us as our civilization makes it out to be.
Every year, thousands and thousands of students graduate from high school ready to embark one of life’s greatest adventures. Many students feel as if high school was tough and an awkward time for them. Some will encounter times when bullies are rude and nasty to them. Others will not have to deal with any negativity and have a great experience, but will not want to go back. After high school life goes on, many students choose different paths other than to continue their education but most of the students that graduate from high school are given the opportunity to attend colleges and universities all around the nation and obtain an education. Although not all students will get to fulfill this opportunity due to different circumstances, such as the expense or some of them may already have a family to take care of and have to go straight to work after graduation. For those students that do have the opportunity and are able to take it, it’s recommended they do. Once a higher education level is achieved, no one can take it away from them. It makes the chances of getting a job easier and also get a higher pay. An education should never be taken for granted because not everyone gets to have one, setting a goal and staying focused on
Most people today think of college as simply a place to get a better education, or merely as a steppingstone to financial success. College is far more than that. College is an experience that shapes a person, which can have both positive and negative outcomes. It is all up to the students to make the college experience worth their time and effort. Students must realize the importance of the responsibilities now demanded of them by higher education.
In the American society, the well-known tradition for stepping into the real learning education experience starts off at an early age for the majority of people. Spending their early years through elementary school, middle school and onto the teen age in high school, but then at that stage where college comes down as the next level of learning, it’s an open option for students whether or not to continue with an higher education. But when the word college is brought up to people in our 21st century, often negative thoughts attack their minds. For instance, how expensive it is today, how’s it’s time consuming, for some waste of time or simply not for them, stressful, plethora of homework given, being stuck
Before World War II, attending college was a privilege, usually reserved for the upper class, but, in today’s society scholarships, grants, and loans are available to the average student which has made pursuing a college education a social norm. Norms are usually good, they help keep society run in an organized manner by sharing common rules and values. But, when pursuing a college education becomes a norm, it does more destruction than good. For a lot of students, a major reason for attending college is because their parents tell them it’s the thing to do to become successful in life.
The second factor is the experience college life brings to college students – growing up in a scholarly environment with a bunch of strangers one can meet and become friends with. Every college student have lived their lives under their parents’ roof before they attended college. They learned and followed the way their parents lived, with their morals, traditions and expectations. College enables the high school graduate to experience a life where they grow up without the presence of the parents. Through their undergraduate years, college students discover themselves, they learn to be independent and responsible, how to manage their time, and encounter young people with whom they flourish and share their values. College is an opportunity to start a young adult life alongside with mature adults, guiding them through their new
A college education has been linked to the American Dream. The American Dream consists of accomplishing dreams and success in the United States. Society has established an emphasis that a college degree will lead to economic and social happiness, but it is important to take a step back and realize that a college degree is not the only way to achieve success and accomplish the American Dream. This socially constructed norm has considered students as disappointments when they choose to not pursue or realized that a college path is not for them. Even though a college education is believed by all as an essential part to an individual’s success, it is not entirely the path to everyone’s success. There are going to be students who are not going to want or be able to pursue a college education, and for those, instead of labeling as automatic failures, there needs to be promoting of alternative routes. A college education is a privilege not a necessity, it will not determine if a person success or failure.

Starting high school is tough for some people. Moving to a new city is also tough for some people. Or me I had to deal with both. I can remember my very first day of high school, I was so nervous. I didn’t make any friends over the summer so I didn’t talk to anyone. I was pushed out of my comfort zone to talk to people and make new friends. A few months into school I received my first interim. It wasn't the greatest but , I blamed it on my transition to high school and promised that
My first day at college ended up with great satisfaction, I though that going to college would be a great impact in my life . And being part of a class where I would learn so many things, gave me the strength to keep going. It would give the chance to relate with new people and of course, to meet new friends who could last for a life time. And of course, to become more independent. Although, I have to study hard, I feel good because I am doing the best to achieve my goals about finish college. Therefore, to obtain a professional career, with a good projection. Furthermore I also want my family to be proud of me, even though they are not with me. I want to become a successful woman in life , no matter If I have to try a million times I would never stop.
